Velta Lorene Belba
Velta Lorene Belba went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2010 at Good Samaritan in Yakima, WA.
Born on March 23, 1924 in Plains, KS, Velta was the second of four children born to her parents, John Oscar and Bessie Haddox Harvey.
The family lived in Kansas until Velta was 4, and then migrated to Colorado and Texas.
Living through the Great Depression, times were very hard. Stories abound about the hardships endured during this time for Velta's family. When Velta was 12, the family moved to the Yakima Valley, settling in Wapato, WA. There Velta graduated from high school.
Velta accepted the Lord as her Savior at age 13. She was ambitious for the Lord and was very involved in her church youth groups. After high school she attended Lee Bible College in Sevierville, TN. There she met the love of her life, Michael Belba. They married shortly after graduation.
Michael was ordained as a Minister of the Church Of God, and Michael and Velta relocated to Hermiston, OR, where Michael was assigned as pastor. The Church grew under their inspired leadership.
In 1949 Velta gave birth to their only son, Michael D. Belba, named after his father.
June, 1951, Velta's husband, Michael, suddenly died and left her as a widow with a 2 year old son, $22 in cash, and a life suddenly changed forever.
Velta moved back to her family in Wapato, and over the next 3 years, was able to build her first small home. In 1956 she traveled back to Lee College in Tennessee, Michael Jr. in tow, to get another year of schooling. She obtained a position at West Coast Bible College (CA) which enabled her to complete her degree from Fresno State University.
After two years, she moved to Kennewick, Washington, and accepted a position at a business school. In 1962, Velta established her own business school, Modern Business College, in Kennewick. It was a thriving business and Velta was responsible for helping thousands of people, particularly women, by providing them the education, skills and confidence to achieve. For her inspirational leadership in the Tri-Cities community, she was chosen as Tri-City Woman of the Year in 1977, an award she treasured.
The sale of the business college brought Velta into the Real Estate arena, where she excelled as an investor and agent. Velta knew the value of hard work, effort and persistence, but even more, she walked as a woman of faith and stood on the promises of the God she served. She remained a leader in in her church, especially Christian singles, speaking and inspiring her audience with her personal story at many conventions and meetings.
In 2002, Velta was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, went rapidly downhill and was in an Alzheimer's facility where she has resided for the last 8 years.
She is survived by her only son, Michael Belba of Kennewick and her brother, Marvin Harvey of Spokane.
A closed family service was held.
