Howard James Scott
YAKIMA - Howard James (Jim) Scott went home to be with our Lord and Savior October 18, 2006. Howard was born in Illinois and moved to the Valley when he was three. Howard is a veteran of Word War II. Howard has been married to the love of his life, Genevieve "Marie" Cone, for 58 years.
Howard worked in Zillah at Stokleys for 20 years until it closed down. He then worked in Selah at Tree Top, which he retired from. He was taken from us to return to heaven while working outdoors at his Yakima home. His huge vegetable and fruit trees were a labor of love for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Marie Scott; three children, Karen (Ken) Egger of Yakima, Donna (Karl) Egger of Selah, and James (Marcie) Scott of Selah; by eight grandchildren, Robert (Carrie) Lunyou, Kenny Egger of Georgia, Katie Egger of Yakima, David Ryon Tibbett-Egger of Selah, Genevieve Egger of Tacoma, Karlonna Egger of Terrace Heights, Breanna Egger of Selah, and Andrew Egger of Selah. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: K. J., Noahty, Kenner and Samara Egger. Dad, we will miss you until we see you again.
Visitation will be Friday from 10-5, and graveside services will be at 1:00 on Saturday at Zillah City Cemetery. Following the graveside service there will be a Celebration of Life at the Zillah American Legion Hall. Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah is in charge of arrangements.
Elsie Bailey
MOXEE – Elsie Bailey, 93, of Moxee, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Elsie was born February 14, 1913 in Hollenburg, Kansas to August and Mary (Backus) Luehring. She was raised and educated in Kansas, where she met and married Tom Bailey in 1930. They moved to Oregon, lived a short time in Arkansas, then settled in Moxee in 1946.
The wife of a farmer, Elsie enjoyed her job as mother and homemaker. She loved her flowers, and grew a wide variety of flowers in many beautiful colors.
She is survived by a son, Jim and wife Sue Bailey of Moxee; four daughters, Donna & husband Maurice Barnes of Yakima, Shirley Schademan of Zillah, Mary Ann Champoux of Yakima, and Jane Murphy of Selah; a son-in-law, Wayne Gohl of Yakima; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; a daughter, Frances Gohl; and eight brothers and sisters, Norman, Arthur, Laura, Nora, Walter, Tillie, Hilda and Martha.
Memorials in her name may be made to Memorial Hospice.
Viewing will be held Friday from one until seven p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at West Hills Memorial Park. Send condolences at valleyhillsfh.com
Antonia Gonzalez
Antonia Gonzalez, 65, of Granger died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006 in Yakima.
Mrs. Gonzalez was born in Mathis, Texas. She moved to the Valley in the late 1940s and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Jose Gonzalez of Sunnyside; a daughter, Sylvia Arceo of Granger; six brothers, Simon Salinas of Pasco, Biterbo Salinas of Wapato, Romolo Salinas of Jefferson, Ore., Francisco Salinas of Kennewick, and John Salinas and Robert Salinas of Salem, Ore.; eight sisters, Guadalupe Torres, Maria Solis, Josefina Salinas, Maria Gonzales, Paula Estrada, Anna Manjarrez and Violanda Salinas, all of Granger, and Cruz Salinas of Florida; and seven grandchildren.
Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Granger. Burial will follow in the Zillah Cemetery.
Valley Hills Funeral Home, Zillah, is in charge of arrangements.
Isa M. Smith
GRANGER - Isa M. Smith of Granger passed away Sunday, October 15, 2006 at Toppenish Community Hospital.
Isa was born February 16, 1915 to John and Mary Brooks in Oakes, ND. She moved to the Granger/Zillah area in the 1950s and married her husband Roy in 1957. She cooked for many years at the Granger School Dist. and was very active in the Granger Assembly of God Church. Isa always had time for helping others and had something good to say about everyone.
Isa was preceded in death by her sons, Duane and Jerry Newman; daughter, Elouise Hall and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Roy of Granger; sons, David Newman of Mountlake Terrace and Ray Newman of Selah; daughters, Thelma Campbell of Granger, Betty Anderson of Granger, and Loretta Steward of Auburn; brother, Jess Brooks of Minneapolis, MN; sister, Inamae Berhow of Rochester, MN; 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10-5pm. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 2pm at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Interment will follow in the Zillah City Cemetery.
Dortha Madge Basford
Dortha Madge Basford, 81, of Yakima died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006.
Mrs. Basford was born in Pawhuska, Okla. She had worked in a linen factory and was also a caregiver of the elderly.
Survivors include five daughters, Barbara Cronk of West Richland, Burnic (Jeannie) Cohenour of Moses Lake, Beverly Gem Butler of Yakima and Norma Jean Hawkins and Marilyn Sue Mosier, both of Tulsa, Okla.; two sons, Jerry Loney and Kenneth Doyle Loney, both of Tulsa; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
At her request, there will be no services.
Sandra Lynn Newcomb
Sandra Lynn Newcomb, 53, of Yakima, passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 at Yakima Regional Medical Center.
Sandra was born Feb. 9, 1953 in Port Huron, Michigan. She came to Yakima in 1985. While in Yakima, Sandra worked for Cintas before becoming disabled.
Sandra loved anything and everything “tweety” and maintained a large collection. She also was an avid pet lover, but lived for her family. She said her grandchildren were “a trip”.
Survivors include her mother, Betty Ham of Wofford Heights, CA; a son, Kevin and wife Paula Bearss of Yakima; a daughter, Angela and husband Jeremy Clarke of Yakima; a brother, Gary Dandron of Wofford Heights, CA; and seven grandchildren, Andreya, Christopher, Michael, Makayla, Heather, Kylee and Tyler.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 4:00 p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left with funeral home staff at the time of services.
Birdie Lucille Lorton
Birdie Lucille Lorton, 77, of Zillah died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 in Yakima.
Mrs. Lorton was born in Toppenish. She worked as a homemaker and as a home careperson for others. She lived in Zillah most of her life.
Survivors include two sons, James Lorton of Granger and Jack Lorton of Zillah; a daughter, Evonne Goeken of Union Gap; a brother, Bill Sadler of Clatskanie, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Lorton's request, there will be no services. Inurnment will be at the Zillah Cemetery.
