Richard D. Tweten
YAKIMA - Richard D. Tweten was born in Utica, MN on February 17th, 1929. He passed away at Chandler House in Yakima on Saturday, April 11th, 2009 at age 80.
Dick was the youngest of four boys and was raised in Anacortes, WA. He attended Anacortes High School; then went on to Whitman College and graduated with honors.
Dick married Lea Rae Lux and started a family in Anacortes and then moved to Yakima in 1961. Dick worked very hard to support his family, sometimes juggling three jobs at the same time. He helped run a family restaurant, worked as a longshoreman and a car salesman before beginning a management job with the Bon Marche in 1958. Dick was promoted many times and eventually became the longtime manager of the downtown Yakima Mall. He retired in 1991, from a career he truly loved. Although life took him to other areas, he always returned to his true hometown of Yakima. Dick had two passions: golf and a good game of cards with friends. Dick watched golf, followed golf and lived to play golf. On his home course, he was a dead-eye putter and could really read those greens. Dick also loved a good card game with his friends, whether it was bridge, gin rummy or poker. In his last years, those card games at the Yakima Elks were truly special.
Dick lived in a simple manner: work hard, be ethical, take care of your family, enjoy time off your way and be proud of your life & family. He passed away knowing he was loved.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Hazel and Allen Tweten, and his brothers Col. B. Wayne Tweten, Ronald Tweten and Kenneth Tweten. He is survived by four children, Monte (Bonnie) Tweten, Scott (Carol) Tweten, Linda (Rod) Vance and Page (Kenneth) Ormbrek, plus thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses, Judy Bulmer & Carol Masterson, and to all of the wonderful staff at Chandler House for their excellent care and attention to our Dad.
In lieu of sending flowers, a donation to the Yakima Elks Junior Golf Program (Attn: Pro Shop) would be greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Yakima Elks Golf & Country Club at 318 Golf Course Loop, Selah, WA.
