Darrel C. Thompson
YAKIMA - Darrel C. Thompson, 70, of Zillah passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Yakima Regional Hospital. Darrel, the son of Ed and Dora Thompson, was born in Truman, Arkansas on April 8, 1939.
Darrel was a long time orchardist in the Lower Yakima Valley. He moved to Washington in 1957 with his parents and worked in farm labor until he bought his first orchard in 1970.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years; Shirley Thompson of Zillah, son; Jay Thompson of Zillah, daughter; Susan Wilson and grandson; Laek Wilson both of Granger, sisters; Betty Ussery of Jacksonville, Arkansas and Freda Gunn of Marble Mount, Washington.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; Ed and Dora Thompson, and brothers; Jay, George, Troy, and Bill.
Viewing for Darrel will be at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 1-5 p.m. Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday, April 20, 2009 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah at 1:00 p.m. with burial immediately following at the Zillah Cemetery.
Viola Anita (Bourgeois) Slagg
ZILLAH - Viola Anita (Bourgeois) Slagg, 86, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2009 with her loving and devoted husband by her side.
Viola was born August 31, 1922 in Winthrop, WA to Lola and Homer (Shorty) Bourgeois. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Lester Bourgeois, Louis Bourgeois, and Mary (Bourgeois) Tierney, and one grandson, Jason, as an infant.
Viola and Charles Slagg were married December 26, 1943 and lived all of their married life in the Zillah Area.
Vi loved her family above all else. She and Chuck attended many athletic events, as well as nearly all of the Junior Livestock, 4-H, and FFA fairs and sales. They were a popular couple and known by so many young people as "Grandma" and "Grandpa." She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery and all of her family has keepsakes of her beautiful handwork. She was a true homemaker and enjoyed having her family with them.
Vi is survived by her loving husband, Charles Slagg, sons; Gary (Carman) Slagg of Tieton, WA and Ron (Gena) Slagg of Yakima, WA and six grandchildren; Ronnie Kim (Joe) Tobin, Sarah Slagg, Cody (Erin) Slagg, Jessica (Tim) Valdez, Amanda Slagg, Hannah Slagg, stepdaughters; Lisa (Dan) Holden, Tabitha (Jamie) Tucker, and eight great grandchildren; Jacee Jo, Karli Kim Tobin, Bobby, Khaylee, Brandon, and Wyatt Holeton, Chase and Gage Tucker, and many nieces and nephews and thousands of friends.
Viewing for Viola will be on Friday, April 17, 2009 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah from 10: 00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Valley Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Zillah at 1:00 p.m. with burial immediately following at the Zillah Cemetery.
Michael L. McFarland
YAKIMA - On Wednesday, April 15, 2009 Michael L. McFarland passed away peacefully at Yakima's Memorial Hospital. Mike was born January 3, 1953 to Floyd and Adeline (Fry) McFarland. He was raised and educated in Cowiche, WA, graduating from Highland High School in 1971 and later graduated from CWU. On October 11, 1975 he married Cindy Brathovde. He was a Jack-of-All-Trades. He built the family home in Cowiche, where he and Cindy raised their two daughters, Andrea and Kristen. Mike was proud to have served in the US Army, as a Yakima Policeman, and as a Yakima Fireman as well as a longtime volunteer for the Cowiche Fire Department.
Mike had an adventurous spirit and had many loves in his life; woodworking, old cars, model trains, hunting and fishing, his Harley, and he cooked like a son of a gun, leaving a pile of dishes in his wake! His greatest love, other than his family and friends, was aviation. At age 16 he earned his private pilot's license under the instruction of Charlie McAllister. He later advanced to become an instructor and charter pilot. He even jumped out of a few planes, but felt flying them was the best. He was passionately involved with the Yakima Air Fair from its inception to its demise.
Although he was not able to share adventures with his friends these past few years, he always spoke of the great times they had together.
Mike is survived by his wife, Cindy, and daughters Andrea (Travis) Rogers and Kristen (Josh) Gilliam, his best friend Max aka The Cat, two sisters Margaret (Don) Ziesmer and Marilyn "Jeanne" (Mike) Tolbert, his brother-in-law David (Linda) Payne his special aunts Mary Lyn Fry and Marian Freauf, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Pat and Bill Brathovde.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday April 24, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Yakima with burial to follow at West Hills Memorial Park. A reception will follow at the American Legion at 1120 N. 34th Avenue in Yakima. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to the McAllister Museum of Aviation.
Mary L. Hammers
Mary L. Hammers, 91, of Wapato died Thursday, April 16, 2009. She was born in Kiefer, Okla., and was a longtime Yakima Valley resident.
Survivors include a son, John Hammers of Grandview; and a sister, Delores Clevenger of Yakima.
No services have been scheduled at this time. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory.
Evelyn Bogart (Baldridge)
Evelyn Bogart (Baldridge), 76, of Yakima died Friday, April 17, 2009 at Highgate Senior Living.
She was born in Richardton, N.D., and retired in Yakima as a Snokist supervisor.
Survivors include her mother, Ruby Dolliver of Yakima; two daughters, Vickie Moon and Barbara Bogart, both of Yakima; a son, Terry Baldridge of Lake Stevens, Wash.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home.
James Edward Fleenor
YAKIMA - James Edward Fleenor, born on June 8, 1941 in Salem Indiana, to Orval & Florence Fleenor went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 17, 2009 at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents Orval & Florence, his brother Gene and his beloved wife Donna Fleenor.
James found his true love, Donna Winters, in Boise, Idaho. they married in 1960 and moved to Yakima in 1964. There they made their home and raised 2 children, Debbie Buckman and Troy Fleenor. James was a devoted husband, father and friend. He worked at Fence and Awning for over 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, jeep runs, watching movies with his family and working in his shop, sharing laughs, with his many friends. James was known as a very honest, kind and reputable man.
James is survived by his daughter, Debbie Buckman, son Troy Fleenor, his daughter in law Donna Fleenor, a brother Mike Fleenor, two sisters Paulette Fleenor and Wanda Brogan, seven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many other loved ones and friends.
James, we love and miss you very much! The memories we have will be cherished forever.
At James request the family will have a time of remembrance at his home on Saturday, April 25th at 12 noon.
Albert V. Bower
Albert V. Bower, 68, of Naches, passed away at Yakima Regional Medical Center on April 17, 2009. He was born in Toppenish, Washington on September 17, 1940 to Victor and June (Pointer) Bower. He lived in Vancouver while working in Portland as a heavy equipment service manager. He loved hunting, fishing and family gatherings. Family meant everything to Al, and he was always there for them.
Al is survived by his wife Linda Bower of Naches; his son Robert Bower of Longview, WA; daughter Tricia Archer and son-in-law John Archer of Vancouver WA; daughters Cynthia Spruill of Rio Vista, TX and Sandy DiPasquale of Phoenix, AZ; brothers Dennis Bower of Selah, WA and Mike Michales of Texas; sisters Mary Chouinard and Bonnietta Tolbert of Union Gap, WA, and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
