Gene Maurice Maitlen
YAKIMA - Gene Maitlen, 75 of Toppenish, passed away at Chesterly Meadows in Yakima on August 28, 2006. He was born in Cheney, Washington on December 31, 1930 to parents Joseph and Luella Maitlen. He spent most of his living years in the Wapato-Toppenish area, graduating from Wapato High School in 1950. He left the Valley only long enough to attend Central Washington University to obtain his teaching credentials. He taught a couple of years in Moses Lake and then came to Toppenish where he taught in the Toppenish School District for almost 25 years until retirement. Gene and a close friend and neighbor, Jerry Burr, built his home in Toppenish where Gene had lived until poor health forced him to leave his home for an Assisted Living Facility.
Gene loved the outdoors, and for many years had a mountain cabin near Rimrock Lake where he spent as many of the summer, fall and even winter days as possible. When he couldn't fish or hunt he could sled and snowmobile with friends. In the early fall he and Jerry cut wood for the winter stoves at home, or just plain sat on the cabin deck and enjoyed the view. Gene was generous with his cabin and it was frequently used by family and friends. Sometimes you almost needed a reservation just to get a seat on the deck.
In his early retirement Gene published a book, "A Learning Time". The book demonstrates his feelings about his love for the outdoors and the importance of teaching young kids about life. The book met with success, but it was the only one he wrote.
Gene is survived by his brother Jay Maitlen and his wife Jean of Yakima; a brother-in-law Stan Nielsen of Billings Montana; three nephews, Brian Maitlen of Yakima, Mark Nielsen of Portland, Oregon, and Mike Nielsen and wife Tracy, and their three children, Phillip, Micha and Rachel, all of Billings, Montana.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Luella Maitlen, a sister Bonnie (Maitlen) Nielsen, and a nephew, Gary Maitlen.
