Dora Cantu
Dora Cantu, 76, of Tieton, passed away on Saturday morning, January 31st, 2009.
Dora was born on October 8th, 1932 in Karnes City, Texas. She was the daughter of Nestor and Paula Rios. Her family moved from Texas to the Cowiche/Tieton area when she was 19. She met Roger Cantu and they were married for 47 years.
She worked at the local warehouses as an apple sorter. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cowiche. She loved camping and fishing, but most of all being surrounded by her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Roger; her sons Roger Cantu Jr. and his wife Diane, Rudy Cantu and his wife Brenda, and Ray Cantu; daughters Rosie Gallegos and husband Tino and Beckie White and her husband JR; eight grandchildren, Jonathan and Zachary Cantu, Roger (Claudia), Jaime, Andrew and Jennifer Gallegos and Renee and Jessica White and one great-grandson, Xavier Gallegos. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family is grateful to ALS for their assistance in helping Dora to be home in Yakima for Christmas, and to the staff at Garden Village.
Viewing will be held from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday February 5, 2009 followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 6, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Yakima.
Rev. G. Ellwood Grissom
YAKIMA - Rev. G. Ellwood Grissom passed away peacefully in Yakima, on Friday, January 30, 2009.
George Ellwood Grissom was born to E.A. and Adelaide Grissom in Lewistown, Montana, on May 24, 1928. When he was a young child, the family moved to Hamilton and he graduated from high school in Corvallis, Montana. He served in the U.S. Army (Cavalry Division) in Japan and then attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis before graduating from Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri. He married Lola Hudiburgh on Thanksgiving Day in 1952.
Ellwood was an ordained minister for the Assemblies of God for over 50 years and pastored churches in Plentywood, Deer Lodge and Kalispell, Montana, as well as serving as the denomination's state Youth and Education Director for 4 years.
After leaving Kalispell, Ellwood and Lola pastored churches in Sitka, Alaska and Rio Dell, California before retiring. He also served as a district presbyter both in California and Montana. In 2001, he returned to Montana and served as the Seniors' Pastor at Christian Life Center in Missoula until his final retirement in 2007.
Ellwood's greatest passion was serving people. He had a special heart and was most happy providing for the needs of his congregation. He touched countless lives in each community he was part of.
He was an avid outdoorsman throughout his life. He loved hiking, hunting and fishing in the mountains of Montana. In Alaska, he developed an interest in deep-sea fishing and boating.
Ellwood is survived by a family who knew they were accepted and loved - and were his pride and joy: Lola, his wife of 56 years; Greg (Nancy) of Spokane, WA; Robin (Joe) Hite of Yakima, WA, and Gordon (Kaye) of Bozeman, Montana; eight grandchildren; his brother, Al (Nola) of Enterprise, Oregon and sister, Pearl (Richard) Zimmerman of Missoula, Montana.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 on February 13 at Valley Fellowship of Yakima, 1701 W. Nob Hill Blvd. and on February 16 in Missoula. He will be interred in Missoula.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and deep appreciation to Del and Cheryl Miles and their caring staff at Izzy's Adult Family Home in Yakima. You made a home. They also wish to thank the Lower Valley Hospice for their care and support.
Fannie Francis Price
YAKIMA – Our beloved mother and sister, Fannie Francis “Flowers” Price went to heaven on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 at Garden Village where she has lived for the past five years.
Mom was born Feb. 18, 1937 to Hershal and Myrtle Flowers. She has five brothers: Floyd, Windle, Bill, Jerry and Roy Flowers with numerous nieces and nephews.
Fannie married George Price on Dec. 24, 1955. They were married until his death Aug. 26, 1992. She was his “Yellow Rose of Texas”. They had three daughters, Cheryl Price and her partner Bob Row, Bert Price and Eva Price; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted Christian and she taught Sunday School at the First Southern Baptist Church for many years. She always worked, from selling insurance to working for H&R; Block for over 15 years.
Our mother would start each day with a prayer. No one was a stranger to her. She would never let a person go hungry, even if it meant she would go without. Later in life she met her second love, Ivan Rowe, who also preceded her in death.
Fannie enjoyed helping with Operation Santa Clause every year that she could. She also enjoyed the sound and look of motorcycles, but was too scared to ride.
Our beloved mother, sister, etc, the kindness and helpfulness of you, your smile and laugh, will always be remembered. See you later at the Pearly Gates.
A special thanks to the people at Garden Village, Hospice, and so many friends and family.
Viewing will be Tuesday from 1 until 7 at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. Funeral Services will be held Wed., Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in Tahoma Cemetery. A potluck reception will follow at the Yakima Eagles Lodge.
Craig Morris
Craig Steve Morris, 49, of Yakima passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. He was born in Packwood on Oct. 26, 1959, and raised in Naches and Yakima. Craig was a member of the National Guard.
He was a jack of all trades and was hard working. He loved fishing, rock hunting and Ellensburg Blue old bottles. He lost his battle with cancer and was in good hands.
He is survived by his parents, Al and Sue Compton of Yakima; brothers, David Morris and Steve Compton, both of Yakima; a son, Steven Morris of Montana; sisters, Donna Storer and husband Mark of Colville, WA, Lorrie Oliver and husband Jeff of Oregon, Kerri Beth Morris of Packwood, and Shere Hock of Oregon.
He will be missed by all knew him.
At his request, there will be no services. Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima, is in charge of arrangements.
Alice Hazel Kelso O'Kelley
YAKIMA - Our dear sister, aunt and friend Alice O'Kelley, passed away on January 28, 2009. Because of the wonderful Memorial Hospice team and her sister Jeanie, she was able to remain at home until the Lord called her to her new home.
Alice was born on February 11, 1923 to Mary and Charles Kelso. She lived in Wapato and Yakima all of her life except for a short time in San Diego. She was a waitress at the "Chinook" and other restaurants in Yakima.
Alice married Clifford O'Kelley on October 8, 1975 in Las Vegas and they made their home in Yakima. She loved her furry companions, Mayjoy, Momma, and Patches, she always had one of them in her lap. Alice liked to work in her garden when she was able.
Alice never had children of her own so she "borrowed" her sister's kids to love and do things for and they loved her in return. She always kept a watchful eye on the rest of her family to help in anyway she could. She always had a wonderful sense of humor and with a sparkle in her eye, she shared it with everyone.
Alice is survived by her sisters Lillian Zybura (Yakima), Lorraine Hartung (The Dalles) and Jeanie Sherbahn of Wapato. She was a special aunt to Lloyd Sherbahn, Gina Stoddard, Janet Smith, Jo Ann contreras, Pam Smith, Steve Granger and Sharon, Kathy, Rochelle, Linda and Yvonne and great aunt to Ashley, Brady, Kindra, Ashton, Rhonda, Neal and Melissa as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Her special friends Blazenka, Albert, Dianna, Kristina and Dorothy will miss her forever.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cliff, sister Joyce Lycan, her brother Elwin and her parents.
A graveside service at Terrace Heights Memorial Park will be held in the spring, per her wishes, when flowers are beginning to bloom. Exact time to be announced later.
