Glen Edward Ergeson
SELAH - Glen Edward Ergeson, 60, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2006 at his home surrounded by family and friends after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Glen was born in Seattle, WA on March 11, 1946 to a sailor out at sea and a mother waiting at home during World War II. The telegram read, "It's a boy-stop-Glen Edward Ergeson-stop." His parents were Curtis Ergeson and Ruth Tvedt Ergeson. Glen was proud of his Norwegian heritage.
The Ergeson family moved to Prosser in the late 40's as Curtis obtained a job in the sheet metal industry at Hanford.
Glen went to school in Prosser, graduating with honors in 1964. A freshman year at WSU brought a letterman's sweater in diving and many trips hitchhiking home to see his girl. He later attended YVC for a few quarters and eventually graduated from Central Washington University in 1971 with a degree in Education and a minor in playing bridge.
Glen married his high school sweetheart, Pauline, September 11, 1965 and together they traveled a journey that would bring them to this day.
Glen was an educator from 1971 through 1978 for the Moxee School District. He loved to teach but it proved too difficult to raise a family on a teacher's salary. Thus, he took at summer job at Hanford and stayed in the sheet metal industry in Local #66 for 25 years.
Glen also served as a youth sport's referee. There wasn't a sport that Glen wasn't willing to teach a child. Even as a referee or umpire he would ensure that every whistle and call had purpose - not as a reminder of a rule broken, but as an opportunity to reinforce, teach and show support to a child learning to dribble, shoot, throw or bat.
Glen spent his youth at the swimming pool, playing baseball and backyard basketball. A member of the Prosser swim team, Glen was an avid and accomplished diver with a fondness for Speedo suits - the skimpy ones. His summer job was life guarding at the pool. Later, he managed swim pools while going to college.
Glen was a hunter, a woodsman, a fisherman; his love for the outdoors was complete. He shot his first deer when he was eleven and he passed his love of hunting and fishing on to his sons. The family enjoyed a cabin on Chinook Pass. Many a wonderful day was spent frolicking in the river and jumping off a bridge into the refreshingly cool water. It was always a grand time for the boys and their friends!
Glen loved taking his grandkids fishing, playing ball in the backyard and teaching them good sportsmanship. Gramps loved watching the grandkids play sports and dance and showered them with encouragement, popsicles, hot-tubbing and laughs - they were a wonderful gift!
With his passing Glen will continue to cheer, teach, and share that kind hearted spirit that makes us laugh and smile. Glen will find a way to venture out into the woods and be inspired by its beauty. He will lie with the Earth and dance with the deer and whistle a Harry Chapin tune with the wind.
Glen is survived by Pauline, his wife of 41 years, 3 sons: Andrew and his partner Alex from San Diego; Trevor and his wife Cherie of Selah and their children Kody, Kylie and Chase; Leif and his wife Kelliann of Selah and their children Elliot and Anna; brother James and his wife Shelly of Sacramento; sister Jo Coffman and husband Cliff of Prosser and their children; Uncle Harold and wife Arlene Tvedt of Williston, North Dakota; brother-in-law Dale Hill of Montana and children of his marriage to his deceased sister Linda; and several cousins in Seattle and North Dakota. Glen is also survived by classmates of Prosser High whom stayed in touch throughout the years. He was preceded in death by his parents Curtis and Ruth; Sisters Linda and Sharon; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
