Jack Vernon Labbee

Jack Vernon Labbee, age 92, of Harrah, Washington was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday evening, May 26, 2017. He was able to spend his last 3 weeks at his home surrounded and cared for by his family.

Jack was born in a farmhouse a couple miles south of Harrah on November 24, 1924. The only child of Percy and Luella (Houghton) Labbee, he spent his childhood helping his father & grandfather doing various jobs on the farm, including working behind a team of horses & milking cows. On August 23, 1944, at the age of 19 he married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine McCorkle. They enjoyed over 72 years of marriage and were blessed with four children: Patty, Jack D., Dan, and Don.

At age 22, Jack, Lorraine and their two young children moved to Denver, Colorado where he attended one semester at Western Bible Institute. Upon his father’s death in a private airplane crash he came back to Harrah to help his Mom care for the family farm. In spite of his father’s accident, Jack flew his own single engine airplanes for over 50 years. His ranch included cattle and crops of sugar beets, corn, wheat, potatoes and alfalfa seed. In 1947, neighbor Gerrit Schilperoort got Jack involved with a crop new to the Yakima Valley - peppermint. Thus began a 70 year career in the mint business.

After 15 years of growing peppermint Jack wanted to increase his mint production significantly but had limited acreage in Harrah. While maintaining the home farm, he ventured 100 miles Northeast to Othello, WA where there was unlimited new land available for peppermint production. After the large farm experience in the Columbia Basin in the 1960’s, he changed his focus from farming to marketing mint oils and formed a new company, Labbeemint, Inc. in Harrah. Now, after 50 years, through the efforts of family and employees, Labbeemint has become a major supplier of mint oils throughout the world. Jack enjoyed the opportunity to make many new friends in his business travels around the world. Jack was a farmer at heart and maintained his enjoyment of farming and the mint business throughout his retirement years. He so enjoyed seeing the business grow over the years and never met a building project (either his own or others’) he didn’t love!

He served for many years on the board of directors of Sundown M Ranch as well as Heritage College/University. He was a lifelong member of the Harrah Grace Brethren Church. Jack loved his Lord and Saviour, Jesus, his wife, family, and many relatives and especially enjoyed summer gatherings watching grandkids and eventually great grandkids swim and have fun together at the family swimming pool. One could never go wrong serving a plain old hot dog to Jack at those family gatherings!

Jack is survived by: his wife of 72 years, Lorraine Labbee of Harrah; daughter Patty Cottrell of Harrah, granddaughter Juliana Cottrell of Seattle, granddaughter Natalie Cottrell of Seattle, great granddaughter Kyla Cottrell Chaney and great grandson Caleb Cottrell Ellsworth (son of deceased grandson Justin Cottrell); son Jack D. Labbee and wife Bonnie of Wapato, grandson Shawn Labbee of Fall City, granddaughter Kara (Chad) Michael of Moxee, great grandson Jakob Michael and great granddaughter Maegan Michael of Moxee, grandson Lonnie (Ferol) Phillips of Seattle, great grandson Civien, and great granddaughter Sianna, grandson Montie (Nicole) Phillips of Lewiston, Idaho, great grandson Lamont, great great grandson Urijah, great granddaughter Tisha, and great grandson Jaden, granddaughter Chani Phillips (Mark Sobolik) of Yakima, and great granddaughters Cheyenne and Chaylia; son Dan Labbee and wife Karen of Seattle, grandson Ryker Labbee of Seattle, granddaughter Hilary (Jonathan) Young of Seattle, great granddaughter Holland and great grandson Lincoln Young, granddaughter Allison (Jason) Davila of Harrah, great grandsons Oliver, Jack and Henry Davila, granddaughter Jennifer (Craig) St. Hilaire of Harrah and great grandsons Owen, Silas, Ezra St. Hilaire and great granddaughter Grace St. Hilaire; son Don Labbee and wife Pamela of Harrah, granddaughter Sarai (Seth) Thomas of Redmond, great grandsons Elijah, Ryker, Cy, Rainn and great granddaughter Phoebe Thomas, granddaughter Leah (Jeff) Clark of Yakima, great granddaughters McKayla, Maudie and Madison Clark, granddaughter Anna (Nicolay) Thomassen of West Seattle, great granddaughters Tevya and Zemme Thomassen, grandson Tyler (Patricia) Labbee of Harrah, great grandson Judah Jack, great granddaughter Lydia, great grandson Leo, granddaughter Laura (Micah) Cade of San Diego, great grandson Isaiah, great granddaughters, Makenna, Eliana Cade and granddaughter Mary (Sterling) Coyle of West Seattle.

He was proceeded in death by his Father, Mother and grandson Justin Cottrell.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 4th, at 4:00 pm at the Harrah Grace Brethren Church, Pastor Peter Touhey officiating. A private family burial service will be held earlier in the week at the Reservation Community Memorial Park west of Wapato, WA.

The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Jack and his family over the past few weeks, especially the kind folks from Heartlinks Hospice Care of Sunnyside. A special thanks to chauffeur Darrel Scott for his driving skills, friendship and care for Jack and Lorraine over the past 2 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack’s name to the Union Gospel Mission, 1300 N 1st St, Yakima, WA.

After a short time at the United States Air Force Academy, he attended Washington State University for a short time and pledged to the Pi Kappa fraternity. After several years at WSU, Jim returned to Yakima and became a full time employee at Boise Cascade. During his 28 year career at Boise Cascade, Jim worked in both sawmill and plywood divisions, holding a variety of positions. After Boise Cascade closed, Jim returned to school at Yakima Valley College through the dislocated worker program, where he earned his AA degree and a Pharmacy Technician Certificate.

In September 1975, Jim married Patricia Westcott and together they have two children. Jim was extremely proud of his children Jacob D. Gaudette and Samantha N. Gaudette. Jim was an avid reader of both science fiction and suspense novels, as well as being a collector of military memorabilia including his collection of antique toy Dinky tanks and military armor. Jim was also a movie buff and had accumulated many movies that everyone enjoyed during movie night in the family room.

Jim is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Gaudette, his children Jacob Gaudette (Kendall Kantola) of Seattle and Samantha Gaudette of Yakima, his brothers: Jack E Gaudette and John A Gaudette, both of Yakima, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Dr. Mario Chenal and the staff at North Star Lodge for their care during his treatment and to Cottage in the Meadow and all the wonderful staff that cared for Jim during his brief stay there. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the Cottage in the Meadow in Jim’s name.

Wanda H. Louman

Wanda H. Louman, 91, of Yakima passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Wanda was born in Tacoma, Washington on April 16, 1926 to Haldis and Clifford Hanson. She was raised in Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High School in 1945 where she was the business manager for the school paper.

Wanda began her office and bookkeeping career while still in high school working for a local furnace company. After graduation, she worked in the office of a low-cost housing complex built during World War II. Wanda loved to dance and traveled to the Army base with her friends in those early days after the war for the USO dances.

It was during a DAV convention in 1946 that she met a handsome young professional baseball player from Yakima who would become her husband of 60 years. Wanda married Jack Louman on January 5, 1947 in Yakima and began a life of a baseball wife. Jack had signed with the St. Louis Browns organization (now Baltimore Orioles) in 1941 and played shortstop for two years with the Pueblo, CO Double A team minor leagues before leaving to join the Marine Corps during World War II. After being honorably discharged in October 1945, Jack returned to his baseball career.

Wanda lived the nomadic baseball life with her new husband for five years. That life, however, became more difficult with the birth of their first child Jack, Jr. in December 1948. The Cleveland Indians made an offer to St. Louis to obtain Jack’s contract and have him replace their retiring shortstop. Unfortunately, the Browns would not release him, so when contemplating having a second child (Jeff) they decided to give up baseball and return to Yakima.

Back in Yakima, Wanda returned to her office/bookkeeping career working for a local real estate firm for many years before joining J.M. Perry Institute as their bookkeeper in the mid-1960s. She later joined the accounting firm of Day, Ludwig, and Criddle until her retirement in 1991. She was a dedicated and tireless employee throughout her working career.

Wanda was all about family. Every night she would talk on the phone with her Mother and sisters, Myrtle and Elaine. Almost every Sunday night all the families would have dinner together. This dinner tradition carried on after her parents had passed but now with the new families of her sons, Jack and Jeff. As she was an excellent cook, everyone was very happy to have her host these dinners.

Her life as a sport wife to Jack expanded as her sons grew to include that of a sports Mom. With Jack playing fastpitch softball in the evenings and the two boys playing baseball, Wanda was in constant motion going from one game to the next, most often being the chauffeur for one or both sons.

Her one true hobby/passion was shopping! Every weekend she would go out looking through the stores, generally by herself and only occasionally buying something. Once her grandchildren came into her life, she now had constant companions to join her in scouring the stores.

Wanda was a loving daughter, sister, wife and Mother who was always there to support and take care of her family. She was a wonderful person who always had a kind word or helping hand. She was a woman of strong spiritual character who enjoyed people, rarely said an unkind word, and maintained lasting friendships with those in her personal and professional life. It was a blessing to have known her and especially to have her as your daughter, sister, wife, Mother, or friend.

Wanda is survived by her son Jeff Louman (Teresa); grandchildren Jack Louman III (Brooke), Jennifer Davis (Jason), Julianne Louman; sister Elaine Crane (Joe); daughter-in-law Libby Louman, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Sr., son Jack Jr., parents, brother Clifford, sister Myrtle and granddaughter Jamielynn.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Avenue. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Wanda’s memory may donate to the Parker Youth Foundation in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
