Henry C. Dennison
Henry Clay Dennison was born May 23, 1923 in Los Angeles, California, the first of four children born to Elizabeth (Taff) and Henry Clay Dennison, ranchers in Ojai Valley, Ca. His death came March 29th, 2009. The past several years his life has been diminished by the burden of Alzheimers.
Clay Dennison spent all his growing-up years in California, on his father's ranches in the Ojai or Sacramento Valleys, and after his father's death, in Santa Maria where his mother resumed her teaching career. He graduated from Santa Maria Union High School and attended one year of Junior College there until being drafted into the Army in 1943.
He served in the infantry in Europe during World War II hostilities. Following discharge from the Army, Clay continued his education at the University of Washington, earning his bachelor's degree there. He was then accepted in the School of Economics graduate program at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
In 1949, while still a student at the University of Washington, he married Joyce Grindeland, also a student at the University. Clay's academic work included a range of major emphases including engineering, Far Eastern Studies, Russian language, and labor economics, but his professional career was almost entirely using his engineering background. He worked as a design and sales engineer in the food processing industry. His professional career began in the Midwest, where their three sons were born.
Interested in returning to the West Coast, Clay was hired by Yakima's Food Industries Research and Engineering firm in 1968, and the family moved to Yakima at that time.
For all his adult life, Dennison was interested in those institutions which promoted social justice, political equality and civil rights. And the Dennison dinner table was always an opportunity to air and challenge ideas. Their three sons have carried those intellectual standards with them.
He was a fifty-year member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church, and a strong supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, The Nature Conservancy, and the League of Women Voters.
Dennison is survived by his wife, Joyce, Yakima, and sons Harry (Henry Clay III) and wife Jeanne; Owen and wife Julie; Philip and wife Amanda; and four grandchildren: Hunter, Joe, Sam, and Eugenia, all of the Seattle area. He is also survived by sister Elizabeth Harper Knight, La Jolla, CA; sister-in-law Betty Dennison, Claremont, CA; brother-in-law Tom Dusek, San Jose, CA; and brothers-in-law Richard Grindeland, Cupertino, CA; and Robert Grindeland, Seattle, WA.
His brother Joe, sister Maryrose Dusek and brother-in-law Oscar Harper preceded him in death.
A memorial gathering will take place in Seattle in May.
