Dorothy Jane Crimin
Dorothy Jane Crimin, 87, of Sedro Woolley, Wash., died Monday, March 30, 2009. Mrs. Crimin was born in Sunnyside and worked as an accounting clerk.
Survivors include a son, Richard Crimin of Everett, Wash.; two daughters, Marje Faubion of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Karen Fisher of Oak Park, Ill.; two brothers, Loyal Paradis of Springfield, Ore., and Glen Paradis of Kennewick; two sisters, Arlene Waller of Olympia and Loraine Barthelemy of Eugene, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory in Yakima.
Byron "Barney" L. Smith
Byron L. (Barney) Smith was born June 27, 1916 in MacKenzie County, North Dakota to Anna Elizabeth Ferguson Smith and Leroy Edison Smith. He passed away peacefully at home on March 27, 2009.
After graduating from Yakima High School Barney worked in the seed business and helped to build the Alaskan Highway. He married Grace Leah Lynch and joined the Army in 1942, was stationed in Spokane and then deployed to the South Pacific during World War II for 3 _ years. Upon his return to Yakima he became general manager of the Kollman-Warner wholesale seed company.
With Grace he had three daughters, Ann, Janet and Barbara. Grace died in 1954 of polio and in 1957 he married Janet Joy Hagen bringing with her three sons, Robert, Christopher and Daniel. In the lively Pickens Road neighborhood the family grew flower and vegetable gardens and cared for 4-H calves, lambs and chickens. As district manager and seed sales manager for North Coast Seed Company, Barney's sales territory covered the Northwest with many of his seed and gardening supply customers becoming lifelong friends. The entire family was enlisted to help in the Barney Smith Sales Company by producing, packaging and distributing home and garden products.
A garden editor for the Yakima Herald Republic, he penned "Barney Smith: In the Garden" weekly for 33+ years. Some of his associations included: the Garden Writers Association of America; president, Washington North Idaho Seed Association, president, Washington Pesticide Consultants Association, president, Yakima Lion's Club; Lion's District Governor; long-term Board member, Yakima Area Arboretum and strong supporter of as well as frequent presenter to area garden clubs.
Barney lived most of the past two years with Barbara and Cragg Gilbert. His parents, wives Grace and Janet, and sister Esther (Edmund) Casler, preceded him in death. He had been married to Mary Jane Smith and is survived by his children: Ann E. Smith Cooper, Janet L. Smith Ellis (Blaine), Robert M. Smith (Ilona McCormick), Chris S. Smith (Jeanette), Daniel E. Smith (Starr Taylor) and Barbara P. Smith Gilbert (Cragg); grandchildren Matthew (Amy) and Scott (HeeYoung) Cooper; Ethan and Cathryne Grace Ellis; Justin, Dillon, and Keegan Smith; Erin, Jessica and Brandon Smith, Nathaniel and Sean Gilbert and four great grandchildren.

Deborah Jean (Moore) Wilcox
Deborah Jean (Moore) Wilcox passed away peacefully March 27, 2009 from a long illness.
Debbie was born Feb. 23, 1958 to James F. and Imogene (Mutchler) Moore in Fairfax, MO. She met her husband, Ronald Wilcox, in Missouri while he was stationed in the Air Force. She moved to California where they were married Jan. 29, 1980. They lived in several different states and Japan while Ron was in the military. They settled in the state of Washington in 1998. Debbie was a medical assistant and taught Sunday School and leader of the Missionettes.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald of Yakima; her mother, Imogene Moore; children, Joyanne, Jonathan and Joshua; sisters, Diana (Dean) Hicks and Jacqueline Moore; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. Debbie was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
Charles William Winter
Charles William Winter, 76, of Selah died Friday, March 27, 2009. He was born in Prosser and served in the Air Force. He worked for Boeing and Sears and owned and operated a service station in Burien, Wash.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Winter of Selah; three sons, Jack Winter of Woodinville-Duvall, Wash., Bruce Winter of Spokane and Charles Winter Jr. of Des Moines, Wash.; a daughter, Linda Perkins of Port Ludlow, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
There will be a family gathering at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory.
Clarence Homer Bussert Jr.
Clarence Homer Bussert Jr., 85, of Sunnyside died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at home. Mr. Bussert was born in Leroy, Kan., and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 56 years.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Bussert of Sunnyside; two sons, H. Leroy Bussert of Grandview and Daryl Bussert of Waxhaw, N.C.; two daughters, Charlene Bussert of Sunnyside and Danel Smith of Tacoma; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at the Sunnyside Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 3 at Grace Brethren Church in Sunnyside, followed by burial in Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside.
Sharon Stack
Sharon Stack, 64, of Selah passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Selah Convalescent Center.
Sharon was born October 7, 1944 in Salem, Oregon. She worked as a waitress.
Survivors include a son, Oscar Theodoriches of Salem, OR; two daughters, Melannie Cleveland of Selah and Karen Clark of LaGrande, OR; two sisters, Kelly Stack of California and Holly Stack of Vancouver, WA; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held in Portland at a later date. Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas “Slug” Benjamin Rice
Thomas “Slug” Benjamin Rice, 61, of Zillah died Sunday, March 22, 2009.
Mr. Rice was born in Forest Grove, Ore. He was a truck driver in construction.
Survivors include five daughters, Angie, Shannon, Melissa, Misty and Serena; three sisters, June Rice and Julia Senter, both of Oregon, and Barbara Spiker of West Virginia; three brothers, Jack Potter and John Rice, both of Oregon, and Jessie Rice of Arizona; and numerous grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory, Zillah.
Yvonne Marie Menard
YAKIMA - Yvonne Menard passed away March 21, 2009. She was a lifetime resident of the Yakima Valley where she raised her 5 children. Yvonne enjoyed the outdoors including hunting & fishing the entire Northwest.
She was preceded in death by her son Rodney V. Bisconer & survived by her daughter Debra Fielding of Island Grove Ontario, 3 sons, Randy J. Bisconer of Wichita, Kansas, Rick W. & Robert W. Bisconer both of Yakima, her 4 grandsons, 3 granddaughters and 3 great granddaughters.
Thank you to all of the caring volunteers and medical staff who helped Yvonne in the last few months of her life. Special thanks to the staff at The Harmony House.
A brief prayer service will be held at the Calvary Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., March 30, 2009 for both Yvonne & her son Rodney. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory.
