Cecile Vera (Whittum) LaPierre
YAKIMA - Cecile Vera (Whittum) LaPierre, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wife passed away on March 2, 2009 in Garden Village Nursing Home at the young age of 93. She was born June 21, 1915 in Dorr, Michigan to Homer Delos and Mildred (Hunsberger) Whittum. At an early age the family moved to Missoula, Montana where Cecile and her older brother Donald lost their mother in 1918. Homer then remarried to Zay Lafray and they moved to the Yakima Valley in 1921.
Cecile attended elementary school at the old Lincoln Grange. She then went to Liberty School and attended high school in Granger where she graduated in 1933. She loved to attend Granger high school reunions and was even planning to attend this year's reunion.
During her last year of school, she met and married her husband of 57 years, Lester LaPierre. They were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sunnyside, Washington on July 1, 1932. They were blessed with two daughters, Maidie Marie and June Ann.
Lester and Cecile lived in the Granger area when they got married, and then moved to the Roza where they lived several years. In 1967 they moved to the ranch on East Zillah Drive outside of Zillah. This was a place that was dearly loved by the family growing up.
Cecile worked on the family farm most of her life as well as for 20+ years for Stokely-Van Camp in Zillah as a payroll clerk. That was one thing about her-she knew how to keep track of a dollar.
In the summertime, Leslie and Cecile loved to travel. They went to Canada, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Michigan. June and her children usually went with them. These are trips that they will never forget, and memories that will always be treasured.
After Lester passed away in 1989, Cecile carried on their traveling tradition. She took a bus to the Calgary Stampede, and a train to Michigan and Chicago to visit family and friends. She also went on a trip to the Pacific coastline and the Redwoods with one of her granddaughters - this time she was in the passenger seat. She also loved to watch Maidie and her family perform in rodeos and cow cutting competitions.
Cecile's many hobbies included handwork (crocheting, word puzzles, sewing, and gardening), card games that lasted into the wee hours of the night, playing pool in the basement, attending her grandchildren's activities, and watching Mariners baseball. One thing we learned pretty quickly was not to call during the Mariners game because she didn't have time to talk - she was way too busy watching the game. She also loved to do leatherwork which included belts, wallets, etc. She enjoyed going fishing when her husband was still alive with Maidie, Gerald, Stacie, and Vincent. She was a member of the Catholic Church, Orchardvale Grange #334, and the State and National Grange.
She is survived by her daughters, Maidie Hettich of Caldwell, Idaho, June Dixon of Zillah; her grandchildren Stacie and Lyle Toresdahl of Caldwell, Idaho, Vincent and Kandi Hettich of Granger, and Sharra and Tony of Zillah, seven great grandchildren, and her sister Elizabeth Arens of Toppenish and brother, Zane Whittum of Toppenish. She is preceded death by her husband, Lester LaPierre, sons-in-law, Gerald Hettich and Donald Dixon, grandsons, Marty Hettich and Jim E. "Chief" Dixon, her sisters, Ester Morrow and Carrie Blanchard, and brothers Donald and Warren Whittum.
The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to a few people. To Dick and Pat LaPierre for all the love and attention you gave our Mother and Grandma. You took her to her class reunions, out to dinner, the calls at the end of the baseball games, and all the extra help before she left us here on this earth. To Pat Ihly, thank you for being there for the many "Dial a Ride" trips for our Mother and Grandma. And to Garden Village we say a HUGE thank you for your wonderful care and compassion you gave to her in her last few weeks, especially to Verna and Marie. The family would also like to thank Kandi Hettich of Memorial Hospital for all of her help.
Viewing for Cecile will be on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Valley Hills Chapel in Zillah from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral mass is scheduled at Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with burial following at the Zillah Cemetery.
