Willis "Ed" Liggett
Willis “Ed” Liggett, age 96, went home to be with the Lord on March 14, 2008 at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 3, 1911 in Boonsboro, MO to Celeste (Rose) and George Willard Liggett. He attended schools in Fayette, MO until he began to work in the hay fields, working twelve hours a day for one dollar a day. He also worked for Rea and Guy Holly’s Furniture and Undertaking establishment, which provided ambulance and hearse services for the small town of Fayette and sold furniture as well.
In 1940 he and a friend drove to California (at 35 mph) to find work in the shipyards and airplane factories. He became a journeyman burner/welder. He was turned down for the draft because of stomach ulcers.
After becoming a Christian in 1947 he enrolled in San Jose Bible College, now William Jessup University, in Rocklin, CA to became an ordained minister in the Christian Church of Christ, receiving both BSL and BTh degrees.
He met and married Eva Wright in 1951 while attending SJBC. They served various small congregations in Wyoming and Oregon and retired from the Thorp, WA ministry in 1975. Since then he has been active in church activities and nursing home ministries in Colorado, Nevada and Washington. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and golfing with his sons and senior friends as long as he was physically able.
He read through the Bible at least once a year and memorized large portions of it. He loved the Word of God and the God of the Word. He wants to be remembered for this, and those who knew him will.
He requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Christian Life Center Mission Program or Yakima Regional Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all eight brothers and sisters, and by two great-grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eva; three sons, David, Daniel and Tom; two daughters, Linda Abercrombie and Ruth Held; nineteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Christian Life Center in Yakima.
Ruth Boyle
Ruth Boyle, 80, of Prosser died Thursday in Sunnyside.
Mrs. Boyle was born in Sunnyside. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, George Boyle of Prosser; five sons, Doug Boyle of Thousand Palms, CA, Brock Boyle of Wichita, KS, George Boy III of Naches, Jeff Boyle of CA and Alan Boyle of Tucson, AZ; a brother, Reed L. Heath of Prosser; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Anna Leah Delp
YAKIMA - Anna went to be with her Lord on March 12, 2008 at Yakima Regional Hospital, surrounded by family.
Anna was born April 7, 1929 in Toledo, Missouri to Willis and Ada Hensley.
At age 15 Anna moved with her family to Zillah, Washington. Here she met
and married her husband Donald on Valentine�s Day in 1948.
Anna was a devoted wife and mother. She was employed by Stokely Van Camp and later Stadelman Fruit. Anna loved to fish, sew, and spend time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Ed Delp (Sharon) of Zillah, Curt Delp (Lynn) of Tacoma, Randy Delp (Pat) of Naches, and Sharon Eskeli (Dennis) of Grapeview, WA, four sisters, Pauline Frost of Wichita, KS, Gertrude Delp of Zillah,
Phyllis Whitmore of Yakima, and Ada White (Jack) of Zillah, ten grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Valley Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Zillah at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Zillah Cemetery. A reception for the family and friends of Anna will follow at the Zillah Legion Hall.
The family has entrusted Valley Hills Funeral Home of Zillah with arrangements.
Billy W. Suggs
TOPPENISH - Billy W. Suggs, 85, from Toppenish passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 12, 2008. Billy was born in Caps, Texas on September 9, 1922 to John Adrien III and Effie Bell (Hallman) Suggs. His formative years were spent in Swenson, spur, Dickens and Jayton, Texas, helping with the family farms and the family owned mattress manufacturing business. During and after high school, he worked for the Mason Chevrolet gas/garage/delearship in Jayton.
During World War II, he enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps between October 2, 1942 and May 23, 1946 and was initially assigned to Aircraft Mechanics School in Lubbock, Texas where he worked for a short time on the flight line with aircraft ground crews. Eventually, he transferred to the parachute department where his duties consisted of packing, inspecting and altering parachutes and harnesses. Between May 1945 and December 1945 he served oversees in Oran, North Africa where he was assigned to decommission warehouses.
After the war he returned to the West Texas area where he worked at miscellaneous jobs. in 1947 he followed his older sister, Jessie, and her husband, Jack, to Oregon where he began his Federal Government career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the Chemawa Indian School located near Salem, Oregon. There he worked on the local school farm, drove trucks and worked in the warehouse.
While in Chemawa he met the love of his life, Louisa Spalding, and they married on September 5, 1953. The couple moved to Warm Springs, Oregon where Billy continued his Bureau of Indian Affairs career working as the Property Supply Officer for the Warm Springs Indian Agency. While living in Warm Springs their first son, John S., was born.
Billy transferred to the Yakima Indian Agency in Toppenish in 1956 where he furthered his career as Property Supply Officer. While in Toppenish, his second son Phillip D., and his daughter, Debra A., were born. Billy spent the remainder of his Federal Government career in Toppenish. He retired in 1984, after over 40 years of Government service, more than 36 of those with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Billy was very proud of his service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and while there developed many truly special friendships with both colleagues and Tribal Members.
After retirement, Billy spent his time preforming volunteer work, working on small household projects, arts and crafts and making trips with his wife and other family members to the Oregon Coast where he enjoyed the beach, crabbing, clamming, and other outdoor activities. Billy also enjoyed attending the Scottish Highland Games in Seattle and proudly became a Senior Contributing member in 2002 and serving as a volunteer during the Treaty Days Celebration at the Heritage Cultural Center.
Billy's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were very important in his life and he dedicated a lot of energy ensuring their happiness. Billy will be greatly missed by his loving family and all those who knew him. He was proceeded in death by his parents, John Adrien III and Effie Bell Suggs, three sisters, Jessie Bell Kizziah, Johnnye Dell Wright and Ila Vell Hutton and one brother, Milous Suggs.
Billy is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Louisa Suggs of Toppenish, two sons, John (Vickie) of Golden, CO and Phillip (Lori) of Bonny Lake, WA, one daughter Debra (Tony) Ledin of Zillah, five grandchildren (Amanda, Anderson, Leah Ives and Axel, Karlee and Tristan Ledin) and two great grandchildren (Ocean and Ayzha Ivory).
The family would like to especially thank the nursing staff ( Steve, and Liliana) of Toppenish Community hospital, Dr. Sauerwein, and the staff of the Lower Valley Hospice for their professional and dedicated care and support during our time of need.
Funeral services will be held at the Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah, WA on Thursday, March 20, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Zillah Cemetery. There will be a potluck dinner following burial at the Hope for the Nations Four Square Church banquet facility in Toppenish. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the disabled American Veterans or the Lower Valley Hospice.
Chad Michael Gonzales
Chad Michael Gonzales fought a difficult fight but was blessed when he went home with our Lord on March 12, 2008. Chad was 33 years old.
Chad was born in Sunnyside, Washington to Rocky and Shelley (Willoughby) Gonzales on March 25, 1974, but lived his whole life in Yakima in the West Valley area. He graduated from West Valley High School in 1992. Chad worked various occupations until he found that his carpentry skills served him best. He was very proud of his part in the building of the expansive ACE Hardware in Moxee.
Chad was a kind and loving person with a smile that no one could resist, and a heart that was full of love for his son, his family and his friends. He was very athletic and was an avid soccer player for thirteen years. Chad loved the outdoors, especially fishing and camping. He had numerous hobbies but his favorites were playing pool, watching movies, and barbequing with family and friends. His most recent hobby, however, had been as a pit crew member for his brother-in-law Bruce when they raced hobby stocks at the Yakima Speedway.
Chad was a loving and caring son, brother, father and uncle. He is survived by his mother Shelley Haas of Yakima; his father Rocky Gonzales of Yakima; his two sisters Melissa Benscoter and Jennifer Uecker, both of Moxee; his son Cory Webb-Gonzales of Yakima; his nephews and niece Ryan, Justin and Janae Benscoter and Seth and Corbin Franklin, all of Moxee; his uncle Alfredo Gonzales of Yakima; his aunt Alma Radke of Michigan; and by numerous cousins.
Chad is preceded in death by his beloved step-father Butch Haas; his uncles Leo Gonzales and Charles Willoughby; his aunt Georgia Miller; his cousins Bud Miller and Valerie King; and his grandparents Ralph and Irene Kenney and Lupe and Maria Gonzales.
Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 18, 2008 at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
