William D. Weidner
PROSSER - On Christmas Day 2007 William "Bill" Dan Weidner passed away at Prosser Memorial Long Term Care Unit and entered into God's heavenly kingdom. Bill was born September 1, 1932 to Alvin and Zelpha Weidner of Chinook, Montana. Raised in Chinook, Bill pursued many boyhood adventures including playing ball, ice-skating the frozen Milk River and tinkering with a vintage Model T Ford and Whizzer motorized bicycle.
A somewhat precocious youth, Bill enjoyed the occasional prank. To curtail his mischievous nature, Bill's father put him to work in his shoe repair shop where he learned to prepare, dye and finish shoes. Father and son were accomplished musicians of the City Band. They traveled and played many social events together. Bill enjoyed these irreplaceable times with his father because he was treated as an adult. These special times developed many long lasting friendships and beliefs, which he carried throughout his life.
Graduating from Chinook High School in 1950 Bill enlisted in the United States Navy at the beginning of the Korean Conflict. He served from 1950 to 1955 as a Yeoman Second Class aboard the USS LST-758 and was Honorably Discharged.
In 1955 Bill moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to be closer to his high school sweetheart Floy Bowen and pursue an education. They were married in July of 1955 and in March of the following year they welcomed their first son Stephen into the family. Later that same year the family returned to Montana where Bill completed an Associate's Degree in General Studies at Northern Montana College.
Striving to complete a degree of Pharmacy Bill transferred to the University of Montana at Missoula where his academic resolve continued. Bill was the President of the National Honor Society, Rho Chi, and a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. He received numerous awards including a scholarship from Lederle Bros. Co., the Merck Award, the Johnson and Johnson Mortar and Pestle, and the Lehn and Fink Gold Award for Academic Excellence. Late 1961 brought the birth of second son Jeffrey. In 1962 Bill graduated with a Bachelor's degree of Pharmacy, with honors and started work at the A & C Pharmacy in Missoula.
In 1965 Bill accepted a position at Grandway Pharmacy in Grandview where he remained until the store closed in 1995. Bill never truly retired. He was always active in Pharmacy working relief for Safeway and other local pharmacies. An exceptional Pharmacist he found compounding a personal passion - each preparation created with love and expertise. Compassion, caring, and skill personified Bill at home and at work. Many gravitated towards Bill's proficiency and concern, as he would provide them with a helpful and sincere consultation.
A devoted father, Bill encouraged his sons in their many interests. He devoted many hours passing along his passion for cars, motorcycles, pets, thread-worn T-shirts, holey jeans, and outdoor recreation.
A free spirit, motorcycles provided Bill with a delight for life that he shared with family and friends. Nothing soothed his soul like a relaxing ride on his bike.
Bill was a devout member of the Episcopal Church. As a Bethel Bible student and teacher his tenacity for reading and thirst for knowledge was never-ending. He participated in the Cursillo movement, was a member of Vestry, and as an ordained Lay Reader, he specialized in church liturgy.
In August of 2004, Bill married Ella Jane Kock of Grandview. In 2005 they moved to Sun Terrace assisted living in Prosser until his death.
Family always came first. Even during his illness, his compassion and caring for them and others never diminished.
Bill is survived by his wife Jane Weidner, sons Stephen and Jeffrey Weidner and family (Carmen, Pamela, and Keane), sister-in-law Lorna Tanberg and husband Carl, and brother-in-law Larry Bowen and wife Judy.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m., on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Holy Trinity Episcopal church, Sunnyside. Bill requested that those loving friends and relatives wishing to send memorials please contribute to the charity of their choice in lieu of flowers.
