THOMAS APARICO
Seattle
Thomas Aparico, 79, beloved husband of Alice, died at home of complications from lung cancer and congestive heart failure on Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997.
Born in Roland, Wash., on June 3, 1918, he grew up in Republic and Tonasket, Wash., where he was a graduate of Tonasket High School. He returned annually to this area of the Okanogan to renew friendships and fish, fish, fish.
He lived most of his adult life in Seattle. Tom retired as manager of new accounts from Associated Grocers after 35 years of service. He served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines and was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and Burien Elks Lodge No. 2143.
Tom will be dearly missed by Alice, his wife of 34 years; by his daughters, Glenna Jones of Tonasket, Wash., and Joan Hetchcock of Pasadena, Texas; his adopted daughter, Bonnie Cook of Atlanta, Ga.; his stepdaughters, Frances Johnson of San Jose, Calif., and Shirley Dunbar of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; his stepsons, Thomas Aparico Jr. of Wenatchee, Wash., and John Larson of SeaTac, Wash.; as well as their families; and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He survived his sister, Cecilia Holden of Bellevue, Wash.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to a favorite charity. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service.

STEVEN MICHAEL BALL
Kennewick
Steven Michael Ball, 23, of Kennewick, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born
to Jim and Lynn (Nelsen) Ball on July 12, 1974, in Wenatchee, Wash., and had lived in the Tri-Cities since 1985.
He was a student at Central Washington University and a part-time cook in Ellensburg. He enjoyed writing his own music and playing guitar and bass guitar with his friends. He liked spending quiet time outdoors in the solitude of nature and he had strong convictions about being fair to people from all walks of life.
Steve is survived by his parents, Jim and Lynn, of Kennewick; brother, Jamie of San Francisco, Calif.; fiancee, Liz Stayton of Ellensburg; grandparents, Rosella Nelsen of Waterville, Wash., and Betty and Allen Jackson of Wenatchee, Wash.; aunts and uncles, Steve and Cheryl Nelsen, Betty Ann Ball, Margie and Kearn Overman and Fred and Ida Ball; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Glen Nelsen and Fred M. Ball.
A "Celebration of Life" and reception will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, from noon to 2 p.m. at the United Way Building on North Young Street in Kennewick. STANCY W. BARKLIND
Wenatchee
Stancy W. Barklind, 92, of Wenatchee, passed away Friday morning, Nov. 21, 1997, at Parkside Care Center.
She was born
Feb. 13, 1905, in Harris, Minn., to Charles and Anna (Erickson) Carlson. She has been a resident of the Wenatchee area for over 25 years.
Stancy and David Barklind were married
in Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 1, 1924. They moved to Cashmere in 1971 from the Mount Vernon area and then after her husband's death in 1980, she moved to Wenatchee. She enjoyed fellowship as a part of a body of non-denominational Christians. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing letters to her friends.
She is survived by her sons, Charles Barklind of East Wenatchee and Roy of Mora, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Barklind; daughters, Mavis and Georgia; her son, Merlyn; brothers, Ernest and Leonard; and a sister, Rose.
Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service, Wenatchee.
LILLIAN GREENFIELD

Lillian Greenfield, 76, of Wenatchee, passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at Colonial Vista Convalescent Center.
She was born
March 17, 1921, in Cooperstown, N.D., to Christen and Kirsten (Jensen) Kaastad. She attended schools in Minot, N.D. She has been a resident of Wenatchee since 1948.
Lillian and Berrian Greenfield were married
April 23, 1949, in Wenatchee. She was a member of Eagles Auxiliary for 19 years. She was an avid bingo player as well as enjoying gardening and yard work and reading.
She is survived by her husband, Berrian Greenfield, of the home; her children, Mildred Marie Simpson of Spokane, Robert Berrian Greenfield of Chehalis, Richard Bellamy Greenfield of East Wenatchee, Lawrence Allen Greenfield of Odessa, Mo., and Mary June Greenfield of the home; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sisters, Inga Ludvig of North Dakota, Beverly Waite of Virginia, Sharon Wilson of California and Donna Helliwell of North Dakota; and her brother, Morris Kaastad of Texas.
At the request of the family, there will be no service. Arrangements are under the care of Betts Funeral Service, Wenatchee.
ZACHARY WOODS HURT

Zachary Woods Hurt, infant son of Gary W. and Kara L. (Kimmerly) Hurt, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at the University of Washington Medical Center, as he was called back to the Lord.
Zachary was born
to his proud and loving parents on Nov. 14, 1997. He was their precious little angel. In the short five days that he was with them, he touched the lives of so many people.
He is survived by his loving parents, Gary and Kara Hurt of their home in Wenatchee; his big sister, Kalynn H. Hurt, also of the family home; his maternal grandparents, Dale and Sherry Kimmerly of Wenatchee; his paternal grandparents, Gary and Penny Hurt of Apache Junction, Ariz.; his great-grandmother, Agnes Smart of Wenatchee; his great-grandparents, Fred and Betty Parker of Sun City, Ariz.; his aunt, Amie Kimmerly of Spokane; his uncle, Lance Kimmerly of Wenatchee; his aunt, uncle and cousins, Julie, Mark, Mya and Jocelyn Matheny of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

BERNIECE M. McCOLLOUGH
East Wenatchee
Berniece M. McCollough, 76, of East Wenatchee, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always full of grace, poise and dignity, passed away Nov. 20, 1997, at Central Washington Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Berniece McCollough was born
Aug. 19, 1921, in Lamar, Colo., to George M. and Enid B. Hyde. She graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo, Colo., in 1939. While in high school and college she was a violinist in the symphony orchestra. She attended Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where she majored in English. Berniece married
Theron R. McCollough on Oct. 29, 1942, in the First Christian Church in Colorado Springs, Colo.
As she began her new life with Theron, there also began a succession of moves through seven Western states. Theron was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as a civil engineer for the construction of dams, power plants and irrigation works and this meant many adventures to come.
Through the moves, Berniece was continually active with the children in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church, DeMolay and Mother Adviser in Rainbow Girls, where she was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors. The family hunted, fished and camped together in Colorado, Montana and Washington. Her whole life revolved around her family and she was truly both the heart and the soul of that family.
Berniece was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee, the American Association of Retired Persons, Wenatchee Garden Club and the Astral Chapter No. 75 of the Order of Eastern Star. She had been a member of the Eastern Star for 50 years.
Some of her greatest gifts of enjoyment were her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 55 years of marriage, her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, the history of places that they've lived and visited, art, reading, oil painting, small bronzes, knitting and cross-stitch. Berniece was a wonderful wife, mother and Nana and will be greatly and sorrowfully missed by all those who deeply love her.
She is survived by her husband, Theron R. (Mac); her son, Theron R. McCollough Jr. and wife Kathy and their two children, Theron R. III and Jessica, all of Spokane; her daughter, Martha White and her husband Gary and their two sons, Shawn and Ryan, all of Battle Ground, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Gloria McCollough and her two daughters, Kelli and Katie, all of Royal City; and a sister-in-law, Jeane Oakes and her husband Dr. Richard Oakes, of East Wenatchee. Berniece was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Scott D. McCollough, who passed away on June 10th of this year.
We will continue to love and miss her always.

DORINE F. (GRONLUND) ROUNDS
Wenatchee
Dorine F. (Gronlund) Rounds, 74, a resident of the Wenatchee Valley for over 30 years, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at her home in Wenatchee.
She was born
on Nov. 6, 1923, to Ross E. and Maudie (Longsberry) Austin at Chesaw, Wash., where she was raised and educated. She married
Gus Gronlund on June 2, 1939, at Oroville, Wash., where they made their home and started their family. In 1950, the family moved to Republic, later to Entiat and then to Wenatchee in 1975. After her husband's death, she went to work for Skookum Fruit sorting apples and later married
Ray Rounds.
Dorine loved John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, working in her flower garden, camping and most of all collecting photos of her very large family.
She is survived by five sons, Ernest Gronlund of Leavenworth, Don Gronlund of Chelan, Fred Gronlund of Ketchikan, Alaska, Richard Gronlund and Steve Gronlund, both of Rock Island; daughter, Audrey Hurd of East Wenatchee; stepdaughter, Billie Jean Neitch of East Wenatchee; three sisters, Pauline, Minnie and Rose; one brother, Frank; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Gus Gronlund and Ray Rounds; two brothers; two sisters; and one grandson.

RAY D. BRANDENBURG
Rock Island
Ray D. Brandenburg, 81, Rock Island, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 19, 1998, at Central Washington Hospital.
He was born
on Oct. 20, 1916, at Stroud, Okla., to Marvin and Millie (Delling) Brandenburg. He was raised and schooled in Oklahoma. On Jan. 2, 1940, he married
Rose Tontz in Kingfisher, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1946, he moved his family to Wenatchee. In 1947, they moved to Rock Island, where he started the family fruit orchard.
He worked for Columbia Concrete in Wenatchee for 32 years, retiring in 1978. Following his retirement, his son took over the orchard operation so that Ray and Rose could travel.
He leaves his wife, Rose, at the home; two sons, Don Brandenburg of Rock Island and Dean Brandenburg of Sequim; one brother, Merle Brandenburg of Van Buren, Ariz.; four sisters, Pearle Brawner of Guthrie, Okla., Dorothy Wright of Cushion, Okla., Martha Johnson of Edmond, Okla., and Mary Jo Ramsey of Tacoma; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

DAVID D. PIPKIN
Cashmere
David D. Pipkin, 64, a resident of Cashmere for the past 26 years, died Saturday evening, June 20, 1998, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born
on Jan. 30, 1934, to Raymond D. and Gertrude Ruth (Cook) Pipkin at Blythe, Calif., where he grew up and received his early education. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and, having completed his obligation in 1958, he returned to Blythe. On Jan. 31, 1963, he received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Reserves. In 1965, he moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and, in 1968 to Caruthers, Calif., where he was employed in the vineyards.
In 1972, he moved to Cashmere where he worked for Schmitten Lumber Company and later the lumber mill in Ardenvoir. He later worked for W.-I. Forest Products in Cashmere until 1988. He had been employed by Cedarbrook in Cashmere until his retirement in 1992.
David is survived by his parents, Ray and Ruth Pipkin of Cashmere; four brothers, Ed Pipkin of Pateros, Bruce Pipkin, George Pipkin and Kenneth Pipkin, all of Cashmere; six sisters, Francis Rogers, Mary Rieve, Frankie Moore and Martha Snyder, all of Cashmere, Lilly Miller of East Wenatchee and Rachel Bowser of Fresno, Calif; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Amos, and an infant sister.

DERALD W. DEARING
Wenatchee
Derald W. Dearing, age 69, lifelong resident of the Wenatchee Valley, died late Saturday evening, Jan. 23, 1999 at his home.
Derald was born
on Oct. 12, 1929 in Monitor to William M. and Mary Hilda (Larsen) Dearing. He grew up and received his education in Wenatchee. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1949.
On may 20, 1951 he married
Beatrice Hower at the Presbyterian Church in Cashmere. Over the next few years Bea and Derald lived in Wenatchee and Oroville before buying a cherry orchard and settling on Wenatchee Heights in 1961. He worked for the Great Northern/Burlington Northern as a Fireman and Engineer for 27 years. He retired from the railroad and later sold the orchard, and moved back to Wenatchee in 1987.
He was a member of the Leavenworth and Three Lakes golf clubs, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends. Derald enjoyed watching his grandchildren swim in their backyard pool.
Survivors include his wife, Bea Dearing, son Don Dearing, son Bill (Marlene) Dearing; daughter Susan Dearing (Brad Boucher) all of Wenatchee; three sisters Shirley Marker of Edmonds, Arlene James of Wenatchee, Marilyn Wadsworth of Woodinville; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Derald was preceded in death by one son, Bruce, his parents, one brother, Raymond, and one sister, Ginny Ward.

JOHN A. MAKOVICKA
Wenatchee
John A. Makovicka, 93, a resident of Wenatchee for over 50 years, died Thursday evening, Jan. 21, 1999 in Central Washington Hospital.
He was born
Jan. 11, 1906 to Anton and Mary (Tomandl) Makovicka in Seward, NE where he was raised and received his education.
On Jan. 27, 1930 he married
Lillian A. Snitily in Lincoln, NE. They spent the first part of their married
lives in Seward, NE on their farm, later moving to the West Coast, residing in Wenatchee for over 50 years.
Mr. Makovicka was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Eagles, and the Elks, and the Plasterers' Union Local No. 77.
John was known by his family and friends for having an extraordinary sense of humor and fun wit. As a young man he learned the value of hard work by helping out on the family farm. Later after their move to Wenatchee, John perfected a mason artistry for approximately 45 years. John took great pride in everything he did from his masonry to every little detail in his yard.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Kim Miller of East Wenatchee and Jonnie Kae and Richard Smith of Wenatchee; brother Andy Makovicka of Seward, NE; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, in May of 1998, two daughters, Regina Stoughton and Verene Beer, one grandchild and one brother, Frank.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for John A. Makovicka, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wenatchee with Father Seamus Kerr, celebrant. A rosary will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999 at 7 p.m. at Jones & Jones Colonial Chapel. Viewing will be Monday after 1 p.m. and all day Tuesday until time of service. Memorials may be made in John's name to Alzheimer's Association Eastern Washington Chapter 5125 N. Market St. Spokane, WA 99207 or to one's charity of choice.

HOWARD E. MITCHELL
Wenatchee
Howard E. Mitchell, 77, of Wenatchee, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Central Washington Hospital.
He was born
April 13, 1921, at Weyauwega, WI, where he was raised and educated.
Following his education he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during W.W. II where he was wounded in action and awarded the purple heart three times. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946.
Upon his discharge he returned to Wisconsin and then moved to Wenatchee shortly after that to work with his brother on a wheat farm near St. John, Washington.
Mr. Mitchell married
Florence Malkiewicz on Jan. 3, 1948, in Wisconsin. The next day they took a train to Seattle where he went to work for Weyerhauser. They made their residence at Everett.
Howard worked for Weyerhauser until his retirement in 1983 at which time he returned with his wife to settle in Wenatchee.
He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion Post #10 and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Howard loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his wife of the home; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Telford's Chapel of the Valley with Rev. Dave Haven officiating. Interment
services will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Viewing will be held Tuesday from noon until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

SOPHIE E. NIEDER
Rock Island
Beloved wife, mother, daughter, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend, Sophie E. Nieder, 59, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Central Washington Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born
Aug. 31, 1939, to Elmer and Elma (Olson) Dannenfelzer, at Hettinger, ND. She attended school for five years at Lemon, SD and then moved with her family to Regent, ND where she finished her schooling.
Following her schooling she went to Rapid City, SD and attended college. Sophie moved back to Hettinger and began working at a local radio station.
She married
Jerald "Bud" Nieder on Jan. 16, 1960, at Mile City, MT. They made their residence at Hettinger for a short time before moving to Billings, MT. Eventually they moved to Rock Island in 1966 where they have since lived.
Sophie was a bartender at the Rock Tavern for a few years before beginning to work in the fruit sheds for Northern Fruit Company and CRO until an illness in 1996 caused her to retire.
She enjoyed reading, driving, visiting and doing crossword puzzles.
She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Carrie Hill of East Wenatchee; Suzanne Nieder of Houston, TX; her parents of Hettinger, ND; three brothers, Ralph (Ruby) Dannenfelzer of Bismark, ND; Marvin and Sheldon Dannenfelzer both of Hettinger, ND; one sister, Lorraine Nieder of Billings, MT; her grandchildren, Keith and Jana Hill of East Wenatchee; Dustin and Brandy Nieder of Orondo; Adam and Megan Nieder of Spokane; two daughters-in-law, Teresa Nieder of Orondo; Mary Mangum of Spokane; a very special friend Alice Lahd of Wenatchee and a special thanks to Dr. David Houghland.
Sophie was preceded in death by two sons, Jerald J. Nieder, Jr. on March 16, 1984 and Jeff Scott Nieder on June 6, 1997.
A private family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park.

CLARA MAE SELE

Clara Mae Sele, 62, of Okanogan, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 at the Mid Valley Hospital in Omak. She was born
on July 30, 1936 at Los Angeles, CA to Wayne and Mae (Yarbough) Melton.
On June 18, 1955 Clara married
Dick Sele at Monrovia, CA. They lived in several communities in California before moving to East Wenatchee in 1955. In 1982 they moved to Okanogan. Clara was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Dick of Okanogan; sons, Mark of East Wenatchee and Paul of Spokane; daughter, Athena Taylor of Spokane; mother, Mae Melton of Monrovia, CA; sisters, Julie Boehm and Louise Nagy, both of Azusa, CA, and Jane Gooler of Pasadena, CA; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Clara was preceded in death by her father.

Dorothy Jean Crowel
Dorothy Jean Crowel, 69, Republic, a former longtime resident of Wenatchee, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons.
Services will be held at a later date.

Derald William Dearing, 69, a 68-year resident of Wenatchee, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.

He was a mason for about 45 years.
