James Franklin Riley, 75, of Belfair died April 15, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon July 28, 1922, in Fresno, Calif. On Dec. 11, 1965, he married icon Carol Riley in Reno, Nev. Mr. Riley served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. Later, he worked as a lather for 40 years. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael of Bremerton, Daniel Appleton of Seabeck, Mark of Arizona, and Jimmi of Port Orchard; four daughters, Shannon and Shawn, both of California, Cheryl Townsend of Everett, and Meegan Garrett of Arizona; two brothers, Charles of California and John of Nevada; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Helen M. Smith, 82, of Bremerton died April 15, 1998, at Harborview Medical Center. She was born icon July 1, 1915, in Seattle. She was raised and educated in Seattle and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1934. On Feb. 5, 1936, she married icon Ralph B. Smith in Santa Ana, Calif. She is survived by her husband; one son, Norman of Port Orchard; one daughter, JoAnne H. Bryan of Marshall, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. John Frederick "Jack" Smith, 78, of Brinnon died April 15, 1998, in Port Orchard. He was born icon Aug. 22, 1919, in Sterling, Ill. On May 24, 1941, he married icon Elizabeth "Betty" Madsen in Las Vegas. Mr. Smith worked as an appliance repairman. Stephen Strittmatter
Stephen Strittmatter, 79, of Olalla died April 15, 1998. He was born icon Sept. 1, 1918, in Baker, Mont. Mr. Strittmatter served in the Army during World War II. Later, he retired as a commercial fisherman. Survivors include his daughter Mary Ann Hahn of Olalla; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. April 19. Jim Cherry
Jim E. Cherry, 76, of Poulsbo died April 11, 1998, at Naval Hospital. He was born icon Sept. 18, 1921, in Portland, Ore. He was a graduate of McLaughlin Union High School in Milton Freewater, Ore. On April 23, 1943, he married icon Rose L. Mateovich in Portland, Ore. Mr. Cherry served in the Army, retiring after 21 years. He later continued with the Army Corp of Engineers, retiring after 17 years. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Michael of Park City, Utah and James of Phoenix; and one sister, Margaret Vancura of Bremerton. Boyd Brenton
Boyd Brenton, 77, of Poulsbo died April 15, 1998, at his home. He was born icon June 28, 1920, in Bar Harbor, Maine. He was a high school graduate. Mr. Brenton served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 38 years as a communications serviceman. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; three sons, Tom of Bainbridge Island, Boyd Jr. of LaConner, and John of Kingston; one daughter, Judy Brenton of Alaska; and nine grandchildren. Allan Shellgren
Allan E. Shellgren, 66, of Tacoma died April 13, 1998. He was born icon Dec. 28, 1931, in Mason County. Mr. Shellgren served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Later, he worked for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring as a boilmaker shop superintendent. He is survived by his brother, Harry of Allyn; and friend, Maxine Rainey of Tacoma. At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Haven of Rest Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bernice Skelley
Bernice June Skelley, 75, of Poulsbo died April 12, 1998, at Martha and Mary Nursing Home. She was born icon June 26, 1922, in Port Gamble. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1938. Ms. Skelley worked as a bartender at the Four Corners Tavern from 1960 to 1970. In 1970, she went to work for Washington Department of Transportation at the Hood Canal Bridge collecting tolls until 1979, when the bridge sank. Survivors include three sons, Pat, Mike, and Steve, all of Poulsbo; one sister, Mary E. Kvinsland of Port Townsend; and seven grandchildren. Albert Fowler
Albert Lafayette Fowler, 82, of Bremerton died April 14, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Sept. 16, 1915, in Sherman, Texas. In 1946, he married icon Barbara A. Randles in Las Vegas. Mr. Fowler served in the Army. He later worked as a plumber, owning his own shop in California and working out of the union hall in Kitsap County. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Nevada and Les of Bremerton; two daughters, June of Longview and Debi of Bremerton; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. George Davis, Jr.
George "Scat" Coles Davis, Jr., 77, of Bainbridge Island died April 15, 1998, at Island Health and Rehabilitation. He was born icon Aug. 5, 1920. Mr. Davis served in the Army during World War II. He later worked as a civil servant for the U.S. government. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Pace Davis; one daughter, Bettie Myers of Bainbridge Island; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jerry Houghtelling
Jerry D. Houghtelling, 52, of Keyport died April 13, 1998, in Keyport. He was born icon Aug. 16, 1945, in Joplin, Mo. He was raised and educated in Nebraska. Mr. Houghtelling served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Later, he worked as a mechanic at Bangor for many years. Survivors include two stepsons, Harold Mason of Keyport and Buddy Mason of California; two stepdaughters, Wendy Battin of Bremerton and Penny Muchuler of Poulsbo; two brothers, Bob of Allyn and Sonny of Hillsboro, Ore.; one sister, Barbara Meyers of Vancouver; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Katherine Dunlap
Katherine Jo Thompson Dunlap, 48, of Jackson, Wyo., died April 6, 1998, at her home. She was born icon Feb. 3, 1950, in Seattle. She was a graduate of Mercer Island High School, and later graduated from the University of Washington. Mrs. Dunlap served as art teacher at the Jackson Hole Christian Academy. Wilbur Henyan
Wilbur "Will" A. Henyan, 79, of South Colby died April 13, 1998, at Ridgemont Terrace Assisted Living. He was born icon May 10, 1918, in Savannah, Mo. On Nov. 21, 1942, he married icon Charlotte Brooks in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Mr. Henyan served in the Army-Airforce from 1942 to 1945. He later worked as an auto mechanic and a bus driver for South Kitsap School District. He also owned a television repair shop until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife; one son, Arnold of Sunnyslope; one daughter, Karen Rhoades of Everett; one brother, Darrel of Spokane; two sisters, Shirley Carter of Deer Park and Coloma Henyan of Spokane; and four grandchildren. Ferne Luedtke, 78, of Poulsbo died April 13, 1998, in Silverdale. She was born icon Nov. 7, 1919, in Valley. In 1960, she married icon Harvey Luedtke in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Mrs. Luedtke owned "Ferne Ceramics" in Poulsbo for 25 years before retiring in 1995. Ann Lowenstein, 81, of Port Orchard died April 13, 1998, at Crista Shores in Silverdale. She was born icon Aug. 6, 1916, in Port Orchard. Former long-time Bremerton resident, Edna Alexander, 100, died April 13, 1998, in Ventura, Calif. She was born icon May 20, 1897, in Haley, Idaho. She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Gius of Somis, Calif., widow of the founding editor for The Sun, Julius Gius, and Lois Mill of Bellevue; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ida Reeve
Ida Marie Reeve, 91, of Chico died April 9, 1998, at Oyster Bay Convalescent Center. She was born icon Jan. 26, 1907, in Gran Maris, Mich. She was raised and educated in Bremerton. Ms. Schofield worked in the health care industry with Hospice programs in Canada for 16 years. Bessie Walker
Bessie Washington Walker, 89, of Bremerton died April 9, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon June 14, 1908, in Saline, La. On April 5, 1929, she married icon James Walker. He died Dec. 26, 1965. Survivors include a son, James of Lake Oswego, Ore.; three daughters, Gladys Berteaux, Bessie Workman, and Thelma Davis, all of Bremerton; a sister, Ethel Tinsley of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Joshua Baldwin
Joshua Steven Baldwin, 23, of North Pole, Alaska, died April 10, 1998, at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. He was born icon May 14, 1974, in Bremerton. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1992. Mr. Baldwin served four and a half years in the Air Force, and was a vehicle operator/dispatcher for the 354th Transportation Squadron. Survivors include his parents, Steven and Barbara Baldwin of Seabeck; maternal grandparents, Morrie and Mary Ellen Dawkins of Bremerton; paternal grandparents, Stanley and Phyllis Walster of Grapeview; and a sister, Melanie Baldwin of Muscatine, Iowa. Fred Larsen
Fred E. Larsen, 55, of Tahuya died April 9, 1998, in Tahuya. He was born icon Oct. 20, 1942, in Yuba City, Calif. He completed two years of college in addition to military corpsman training. On June 15, 1991, he married icon his wife, Kathy, in Tahuya. Mr. Larsen served in the National Guard from 1964 to 1970. He owned North Shore Sails until retiring in 1996. Mr. Harm served in the Navy for eight years. He later worked as a mechanic/inspector at Keyport for 20 years, retiring in 1997. Joseph Dalton
Col. Joseph R. Dalton, 79, of Sequim died April 13, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Dec. 13, 1918, in Geary, Kan. He received his master's degree. Col. Dalton served in the Army after leaving the Marine Corps, where he attained a battlefield commission as a lieutenant. Janet Maddock, 63, of Manchester died April 10, 1998, at Tacoma General Hospital. She was born icon June 21, 1934, in Auburn. She graduated from the University of Washington and then received her master's degree from University of Puget Sound. On June 7, 1987, she married icon James Maddock in Tacoma. Mrs. Maddock worked as a career counselor at University of Puget Sound until retiring in 1994. Later, she served on the South Kitsap School Board. Rosaleen K. Youderian, 78, of Poulsbo died April 6, 1998, in Bremerton. She was born icon Sept. 1, 1919, in Stockport, Cheshire County, England. On July 31, 1943, she married icon Loren Youderian in Stockport, England. Mrs. Youderian was a shorthand typist during World War II. She later taught catechism at St. Peter's parish in Suquamish. Burdick in Mount Vernon. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Don of Wenatchee and Bud of Fort Bragg, Calif.; one sister, Peggy White of Albany, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Emanuel Beglau
Emanuel "Dutch" Beglau, 85, of Harper died April 9, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Sept. 13, 1912, in Walsh, Alberta, Canada. Mr. Beglau worked for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a shipfitter for 20 years until retiring in 1973. Survivors include three sons, Fred and Ronald of Key Peninsula, and Jerry of Seattle; one stepson, John Steiner of Lake Cushman; one daughter, Sherrie Osinski of Tacoma; one stepdaughter, Ina Cheyney of Seabeck; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Delbert Walpole
Delbert "Del" H. Walpole, 73, of Shelton died April 8, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Jan. 13, 1925, in Napa, Calif. He attended Bob Jones College in Tennessee for almost four years, Eastern Oregon College of Education in LaGrande, Ore. from 1947 to 1949, and the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. in 1975. On June 2, 1947, he married icon Frances Rice Walpole in Ozone, Tenn. Mr. Walpole served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, and in the Airforce Reserve from 1951 to 1971. He also worked as a sheriff for many years. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Flint of Bremerton, John of Portland, Ore., and Brooks of Gig Harbor; one brother, Marvin of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sisters, Emma of Woodburn, Ore. and Carroll Cole of McMinnville, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Eva Margaret Wilson, 65, of Bremerton died April 7, 1998, at her home. She was born icon Dec. 14, 1932, in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was born, raised and educated in Scotland. She came to the U.S. in 1956 and to Kitsap County in 1968. Mrs. Wilson worked as a payroll clerk for the Central Kitsap School District for many years. Survivors include two sons, Matthew of Poulsbo and Mark of Tacoma; and two brothers, Gerald and Frankie Yarwood of Scotland. Herbert Strandskov
Herbert Warren Strandskov, 77, of Poulsbo died April 9, 1998, at his home. He was born icon March 30, 1921, in Plentywood, Mont. He graduated high school in 1939 and attended Northern Montana College in Havre, Mont. On May 4, 1944, he married icon Marguerite Karhu Strandskov in Bremerton. Mr. Strandskov served in the Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. Later, he worked for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 28 years until retiring in 1973. Virginia L. "Ginger" Burton, 64, of Tallahassee, Fla., died April 8, 1998, in Tallahassee, Fla. She was born icon in Burley. She worked for the Department of Insurance, Division of Liquidation and Rehabilitation for 18 years. Survivors include one son, Lloyd M. Helen Marie Keenan, 83, of Poulsbo died April 4, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon Oct. 27, 1914, in Clark, S.D. She was raised and educated in South Dakota. On Oct. 12, 1936, she married icon Stephen Keenan in South Dakota. He preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1985. Mrs. Keenan worked as a secretary for law firms for many years. Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Munson and Nada Torgerson, both of Bremerton, and Coleen Thompson of Seattle; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She graduated from high school in Mabel Township. She was a community volunteer and a graphologist - someone who studies handwriting - for many years at the Bremerton YMCA. Survivors include a brother-in-law, Howard Whitney of Bremerton; a sister, Alys Olgarrd of Bremerton; a niece, Rochelle Whitney of Silverdale; and three nephews, Clarke Whitney of Bremerton, Lance Whitney of Spokane, and Neil Whitney of San Diego. Lewis Anderson
Lewis Eugene Anderson, 76, of Port Orchard and Idaho City, Idaho died April 4, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon May 12, 1921, in Bremerton. He graduated from Port Orchard High School in 1939. Mr. Anderson served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He owned Andy's Supply in Boise, Idaho for many years, until retiring. Survivors include three sons, Edgar Anderson and William Grant, both of Boise, Idaho, and Fred Grant of Sequim; a daughter, June Eriksen of Rupert, Idaho; a brother, Ed of Port Orchard; two sisters, Florence Lentz of Port Orchard and Blanche Clark of Pe Ell; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mabel Parsons
Former Bremerton resident Mabel Rae Parsons, 73, of Ocean Shores died April 1, 1998, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. She was born icon Dec. 22, 1924, in Orin. She attended schools in Colville and Kellogg, Idaho. In October of 1942, she married icon David Swan in Bremerton. They divorced in 1964. She married icon Merton Ray Parsons in 1966, and he preceded her in death on July 20, 1991. She worked as a budget analyst for the Navy from 1950 until she retired in 1979. Survivors include two sons, James Swan of Reno, Nev., and Robert "Rocky" Swan of Bullhead City, Ariz.; one daughter, Claudia Matzke of Minneapolis; two step-sons, Craig Parsons and Michael Parsons, both of Riverside, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. April 9 in the Galilean Chapel in Ocean Shores. Arrangements are under the direction of Coleman Mortuary.

Lee Jones
Lee D. Jones, 59, of Bremerton died April 5, 1998, at Oyster Bay Care Center. He was born icon July 19, 1938, in Houston. Mr. Jones worked as a framer in the carpentry industry. Charles Fuhrer
Charles D. Fuhrer, 89, of Bremerton died March 29, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Feb. 12, 1909, in Lancaster County, Neb. On Dec. 18, 1971, he married icon Laura Fuhrer in Reno, Nev. Mr. Fuhrer worked as a civil service employee for over 20 years, retiring as a plumber at Keyport in 1972. Survivors include one son, Ronald of Bremerton, two stepsons, James Fee of Bremerton and Russell Fee of Idaho Falls, Idaho; one daughter, Linda Way of Boron, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Merle Cole of Bremerton; one brother, Clyde of Hickman, Neb.; one sister, Eva Devere of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. David Allen Davis, 18, of Seabeck died March 30, 1998, in Silverdale. He was born icon Dec. 18, 1979, in Bremerton. He was a senior at Central Kitsap High School. He also worked part time as a mechanic for the family business. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Roberta Davis of Seabeck; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Davis of Bremerton; and his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Murry of Port Orchard. Anthony Szlatenyi
Anthony Szlatenyi, 56, of Bremerton died March 28, 1998, at home. He was born icon Oct. 7, 1941, in Providence, R.I. He graduated from George Washington High School in Guam in 1960. On June 18, 1967, he married icon Gloria Bankes in Florida. Mr. Szlatenyi served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, serving aboard the USS Turner Joy. In 1954, she married icon Ernest Boneta in Las Vegas. Mrs. Boneta worked at B.J. Services in Los Angeles until retiring in 1966. Lawrence Safly
Lawrence V. Safly, 81, of Bremerton died March 29, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon June 17, 1916, in Sumner, Mo. Mr. Safly served in the Navy, aboard the USS Colorado, from 1932 to 1940. Later, he worked as an electrician for Portland General Electric. He retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Survivors include three sons, John, Charles, and Ron, all of Bremerton; one daughter, Karen Johnson of Bothell; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Lila, in 1995. Services will be at 2 p.m., April 4, at Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills in Lynnwood.

Charlotte Hammond
Charlotte B. Hammond, 64, of Suquamish died March 22, 1998, at her home. She was born icon May 17, 1933, in Red Wing, Minn. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1955. Ms. Hammond worked as a writer. Survivors include one son, Webb R. of Silverdale; two daughters, April J.
