In 1940, he married icon Dora Rowe. Survivors include a son, Bill of Poulsbo; a daughter, Suzanne Anest of Kingston; a brother, Robert of Olympia; a sister, Helen Lawson of Kingston; and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. June 19 at Kingston Cemetery icon at Norman and Kingston roads. Fern Sandland
Fern L. Sandland, 74, of Port Orchard, died June 12, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton. She was born icon on Sept. 22, 1923, in Moorhead, Minn., where she married icon Norman Sandland on March 16, 1939. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her fiance, Leon Spencer, a son, Butch, and daughters Janice Newman, Sharon Acosta and Victoria Morse, all of Port Orchard, a fourth daughter, Laurel Crase of Butte, Mont.; three brothers, Harvey and Vernon Peterson, both of Spokane, and Dean Peterson of Denver, 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 16 from 2 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, June 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard, with a funeral service there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Charlotte Louise "DeBroeck" Wikoff, 63, of Bremerton died June 9, 1998, in Bremerton. She was born icon March 16, 1935, in Bremerton. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1952. On Jan. 20, 1979, she married icon Joseph F. Wikoff Sr. in Belfair. Mrs. Wikoff went to work for U S West after graduation from high school and retired in 1986. Survivors include her husband; one son, Joe of Gig Harbor; two daughters, Sandra Lay and Rhonda Dato, both of Port Orchard; one brother, Charles L. DeBroeck Jr. of Poulsbo; one sister, Angela M. Elmer Wallace
Elmer F. Wallace, 82, of Poulsbo died June 10, 1998, in Poulsbo. He was born icon Dec. 29, 1915, in Bellefourche, S.D. He attended Wenatchee High School and then went on to study police science at the University of Southern California. On June 5, 1938, he married icon Enid A. Wallace in Wenatchee. Mr. Wallace was a police officer for 30 years in Pasadena, Calif. He also taught at the Police Academy in Los Angeles. Survivors include one son, James of Upland, Calif.; one daughter, Margie Marinelli of Kingston; one brother, Norman of Wenatchee; and three granddaughters. Elfay F. Murphy, 93, of Port Orchard died June 9, 1998, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center. She was born icon Aug. 17, 1904, in Seattle. She was in the second graduating class from South Kitsap High School in 1923. On June 10, 1925, she married icon James E. Murphy in Bremerton. She is survived by three sons, Laurence of Vancouver, James of Port Orchard, and Dennis of Tampa Bay, Fla.; one daughter, Eileen Cain of Port Orchard; 22 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren. Richard Knutson
Richard F. Knutson, 62, of Port Orchard died June 10, 1998, at his home. He was born icon June 21, 1935, in Everett. He attended Everett High School, Everett Junior College, and Pacific Lutheran University. Mr. Knutson served in the Navy from 1959 to 1961. Later he worked as a marine electrician for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1966 until retiring in 1983. Survivors include three sons, Rick and Matthew, both of Rochester, and Robert Canavan of Port Orchard; three daughters, Tina Post of Tahuya, Michelle of Port Orchard and Patricia Carter of Tumwater; one brother, Herb of Kalispell, Mont.; three sisters, Iris Tompkins, Ruth Sundseth, and Sheila, all of Seattle; and six grandchildren. Thomas Eugene Elsworth, 51, of Port Orchard died June 8, 1998, in Spokane. He was born icon July 26, 1946, in Bremerton. Mr. Elsworth served in the Navy from 1965 to 1968. Later, he worked as a pipefitter for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Romona "Spain" Elsworth; two sons, Grant of Cheney and Mickey Durham of Quilcene; three daughters, Dawna Lundberg of Ione, Amy Kelley of Silverdale and Debra Wilson of Port Orchard; two sisters, Sandra Hay of Olalla and June Boring of Largo, Fla.; his mother, Evelyn Coon of Port Orchard; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Linnea A. Swanson, 89, of Bremerton died June 6, 1998, at Oyster Bay Convalescent Center. She was born icon Nov. 23, 1908, in Nagaunee, Mich. She graduated from Everett High School in 1926 and received nurses' training from Everett General Hospital. On June 22, 1931, she married icon Chester H. Swanson in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She is survived by her husband; one son, Arlan of Bremerton; two daughters, Yvonne Collins of Bremerton and Donna L. Donald Middleton
Former Port Orchard resident Donald Burl Middleton, 89, died June 1, 1998, in Ridgecrest, Calif. He was born icon Dec. 10, 1908, in Blaine. On May 26, 1968, he married icon Irene Ivey Middleton in Port Orchard. Mr. Middleton served in the Cavalry and Army Air Corp, dates of service unknown. He also served in the Navy from 1941 to 1943. He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as an engineer for 25 years, retiring in 1969. Survivors include two sons, Alan of Belfair and Roger of Otis, Ore.; two stepsons, Richard Mitchell of Gig Harbor and Duane Baxter of Long Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Sheila Harper of Silverdale, Sharon Smith of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Susan of Tahuya; one stepdaughter, Connie Allen of Port Orchard; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Myrtle Beatrice Perso, 98, of Bremerton died June 9, 1998, at her home. She was born icon Sept. 14, 1899, in Spooner, Minn. William Tobin
William R. Tobin, 74, of Poulsbo died June 6, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Oct. 31, 1923, in Seattle. He graduated from O'Dea High School in 1942. On Feb. 19, 1949, he married icon Betty Adams in Seattle. Mr. Tobin served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946. Later, he worked for 35 years in the tavern and restaurant business. His first business was Toby's Tavern on Capitol Hill in Seattle. He also owned and managed the Martinique Restaurant on Bainbridge Island, retiring in 1982. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William of Kingston and Robert of Poulsbo; two daughters, Paula Velie and Colleen Schafer, both of Poulsbo; two brothers, Robert and John, both of Seattle; three sisters, Ruth Dawson of Bothell, Helen Wallcott of Everett and Betty Fitzmaurice of Poulsbo; and seven grandchildren. James Rasmussen
James T. Rasmussen, 78, of Port Ludlow died June 9, 1998, in Bellingham. He was born icon April 22, 1919, in Shields, N.D. He was raised and educated in Lynden. Mr. Rasmussen served in the Army during World War II. He worked with Puget Sound Power & Light Co. for many years. Survivors include three daughters, Vivian Queen of Lynden, Joan of Bellingham, and Jane Manson of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Merl of Lynden; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A service will be at 1 p.m. June 15, at Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.

Arthur Von Behren
Arthur Charles Von Behren, 81, of Poulsbo died June 4, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center. He was born icon March 30, 1917, in Bogalusa, La. He was a high school graduate. On April 5, 1939, he married icon Clair Fay Rawls in New London, Conn. Mr. Von Behren served in the Navy for 30 years, retiring in 1966. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Donna Gagne of Keyport and Barbara Von Behren of Olympia; a brother, Gordon Tinnin of Poulsbo; a sister, Bettie Anderson of Poulsbo; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Helen Nation, 57, a long-time Port Orchard resident, died June 5, 1998, in Mobile, Ala. She was born icon Aug. 8, 1940, in Tacoma. Theodore R. Swedberg, 74, of Port Orchard died June 9, 1998, at Port Orchard Care Center. He was born icon Feb. 22, 1924, in Moose Lake, Minn. On Dec. 11, 1952, he married icon Ida Mae Ashton in Astoria, Ore. Mr. Swedberg served in the Navy, retiring in 1970 after 30 years. Later, he worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Shop No. 56 as a shipfitter from 1974 until retirement in 1985. Sister Anne Therese Triggs, 74, of Seattle died June 8, 1998, in Seattle. She was born icon July 25, 1923, in Bremerton. She was a graduate of Our Lady Star of the Sea School and Bremerton High School. Following her entry into the Dominican Sisters of Edmonds, she became a registered nurse through Providence Hospital School of Nursing. In 1976, she returned to Star of the Sea and was Director of Pastoral/Social Care of Seniors until her retirement in 1994. Survivors include her sister, Mary Agnes Fletcher of Bremerton; and two brothers, Tom Triggs of Bremerton and John Triggs of Topeka, Kan. Margaret E. Ryder, 85, of Olympia died there on May 29, 1998. She was born icon March 19, 1913, in Olympia. She graduated from Elma High School. She completed training to become a licensed practical nurse at Olympic College in 1957. On Aug. 7, 1931, she married icon Russell "Rusty" Ryder in Olympia. Mrs. Ryder worked at Harrison Memorial Hospital until retiring in the early 1970s. She is survived by three sons, Gerald of Port Townsend, Dennis of Onalaska, and Ronald of Lacey; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977. He attended St. Vincent High School in Chicago and then attended the University of Illinois. Mr. Erickson was a hair stylist and also a drug and alcohol counselor. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Spilde of Stoughton, Wis.; his best friend, Delancey Woods of Bremerton; one godson, Jack Woods of Bremerton; and one goddaughter, Hailee Woods of Bremerton. Erlene Foltz
Erlene M. Foltz, 73, of Silverdale died May 31, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon Aug. 3, 1924, in Milton-Freewater, Ore. She attended school through the eighth grade. Ms. Foltz worked as a laundress. Leatha Cameron
Leatha Jennings Cameron, 100, of Poulsbo died May 28, 1998, at Martha & Mary Nursing Home. She was born icon Sept. 8, 1897, in Vernon County, Wis. Her first husband, Carl E. Bladow, preceded her in death in 1960. Her second husband, Paul D. Cameron, preceded her in death in 1975. Survivors include one son, Gale Bladow of San Diego; three daughters, Dorothy Barney of Bremerton, Mildred Kusy of Fairborn, Ohio, and Jean Gimlin of Visalia, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Charles Harrison Jr.
Charles H. Harrison Jr., 56, of Port Orchard died May 29, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Feb. 9, 1942, in Bismarck, N.D. He attended a year of college in California. Mr. Harrison served in the Army from March 1963 to June 1966, serving in Vietnam. Later, he worked as a long haul truck driver for five years. Survivors include one son, Charles III of Port Orchard; three brothers, Neyl McClure of Bismarck, N.D., Ace McClure of Oregon and Amasa of Everett; one sister, Lola Eagle of Albuquerque, N.M.; his father, Charles Sr. of Bismarck, N.D.; and one grandchild. John Anderson
John R. Anderson, 81, of Poulsbo died June 1, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Oct. 10, 1916, in South Range, Wis. On June 8, 1940, he married icon Edith M. Youderian in Iowa. Vernon Hayes
Vernon George Hayes, 71, of Bremerton died June 2, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Sept. 2, 1926, in Scobey, Mont. He graduated from high school in Bremerton in 1945. On Aug. 2, 1984, he married icon Dorothy in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Mr. Hayes worked in auto body repair. He spent the last 20 years working at Clifford's Auto Body Shop until retiring in 1997. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stuart of Long Beach, Calif., and Stanley of Cypress, Calif.; two daughters, Jeri Yarchenko of Beaverton, Ore., and Roberta Murphy of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Max of Bremerton; two sisters, Kay Johnson and Alice McIntyre, both of Bremerton; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Donna Harding
Donna Jeanne Harding, 66, of Chimacum died June 2, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon Aug. 8, 1931, in Elma. She was a high school graduate. On July 3, 1948, she married icon Ned Leroy Harding in Longview. For 24 years, Mrs. Harding worked as a line person in paper manufacturing. Survivors include her husband; one son, Lester of Chimacum; five daughters, Loucinda Filbert of Deming, Roberta Meyer of Chimacum, Catherine of Seattle, Susan Mikelson of Tacoma and Lisa Erhart of Olympia; three foster children, Steven, Richard and Helen; one brother, Lewis Cox of Toronto, Canada; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Charles Kenneday
Charles David Kenneday, 81, of Poulsbo died June 1, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Feb. 12, 1917, in Bradington, Fla. On Dec. 26, 1947, he married icon Sheila Stricklett in Wilmington, Calif. Mr. Kenneday served in the Marines from 1941 to 1955, retiring as a captain. Later, he worked at Bangor and retired as manager in the material department in February 1978. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sharron Cross of Bellevue; one brother, Howard of Winter Garden, Fla.; and one sister, Norine Milum of Winter Garden, Fla. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4, 5, and 6. Services will be held at 11 a.m. June 8 with military honors to follow. All will be held at the Stone Chapel. Violet Murphy-Meyer
Violet Elaine Murphy-Meyer, 78, of Manchester died June 1, 1998, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center. She was born icon Dec. 23, 1919, in Poulsbo. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1938. On Dec. 31, 1995, she married icon Paul Meyer in Lompoc, Calif. Mrs. Murphy-Meyer worked in the data processing department of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 22 years until her retirement. Survivors include her husband; one stepson, John Paul of Rockline, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Jacquelyn Whithurst of Colorado and Patricia Honaker of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two brothers, Franklin of Bremerton and Leonard of Bridgeville, Calif.; and one sister, Carol Baker of Tracy, Calif. Marlin G. Lang, 90, of Belfair died May 25, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Sept. 24, 1907, in Fillmore, Iowa. Charles Cornwell
Charles Emil Cornwell, 78, of Port Orchard died May 30, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon July 14, 1919, in St. Lawrence, S.D. On March 28, 1940, he married icon Maxine in Omak. Mr. Cornwell served in the Army during World War II. He then went to work as a machinist/engraver at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1974. For the last 24 years, he has worked for Twin Firs Tack Shop. He is survived by his daughter, Audrey Eileen Handy-Henderson of Port Orchard; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Nora Anna Stansbury, 98, of Bremerton died May 30, 1998, at Oyster Bay Care Center. She was born icon July 23, 1899, in McLeod County, Minn. On May 26, 1945, she married icon David Stansbury in Seattle. Survivors include one stepson, Wesley of Bremerton; one daughter, Lorraine Huber of Belle Plaine, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Marie Hilliard of Keansburg, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Maudana Pond
Maudana Ruth Pond, 73, of Bremerton died May 31, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon May 25, 1925, in Effingham, Ill. She graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1943. Ms. Pond worked as a purchasing agent for Shop No. 56 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until retiring in 1976. Survivors include three sons, David Patterson of Kirkland, Richard Patterson of Silverdale and Jeff Patterson of Bremerton; two brothers, Rocky Orsborn of Edmonds and James Orsborn of Port Townsend; one sister, Doris Yesberger of Sequim; and five grandchildren. Helen Sullivan
M. Helen Sullivan, 91, of Belfair died May 26, 1998, at her home. She was born icon June 12, 1906, in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from North High School in 1922 and Hamline University of Minneapolis in 1927. On June 30, 1934, she married icon James W. Sullivan in San Francisco, Calif. She is survived by two sons, Michael O'Sullivan of Allyn and James "Corky" Sullivan of Silverdale; two daughters, Jean Copper of Bremerton and Marnie Marr of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Kathleen Hull of Port Townsend; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. William Gwynn
William E. Gwynn, 82, of Bremerton died May 30, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Feb. 4, 1916, in Newport, Ore. He attended the University of Puget Sound. On Dec. 22, 1941, he married icon his wife, Bert "Jolley," in Tacoma. Mr. Gwynn served in the Army Signal Corp from 1942 to 1945. He later worked in the civil service at Keyport for 32 years, retiring in 1978. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jim of Cheney and Michael of Seattle; three daughters, Betty Foster of La Conner, Frankie Hall of Gig Harbor and Pam Cox of Grand Canyon; one sister, Margaret Edmond of Puyallup; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Julie Farmer
Julie Kaye Farmer, 34, of Port Orchard died May 31, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon June 12, 1963, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is a 1981 graduate of Preston High School in Idaho. She also attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. On May 17, 1987, she married icon Steven A. Farmer in Idaho Falls. Mrs. Farmer was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Megan of Port Orchard; her mother, Mary Avery of Port Orchard; maternal grandfather, Everette Iler of Newberg, Ore.; two brothers, Jeffrey Avery of Ucon, Idaho, and Mathew Avery of Logan, Utah; and a sister, Jody Askew of Bancroft, Idaho. James Harris
James Thomas Harris, 70, of Port Orchard died May 30, 1998, in Port Orchard. He was born icon Feb. 6, 1918, in Philipsburg, Pa. On Feb. 3, 1953, he married icon his wife, Irene, in Lemoine, Pa. Mr. Harris served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1952. He later worked for 25 years as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1978. Jewell in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1930. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Jewell was a teacher and homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth of Bremerton; a stepson, W.L. "Bill" Jewell of Grand Junction, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Jeane Doncaster of Sutter Creek, Colo.; and six grandchildren. June Olson
June E. Olson, 84, of Poulsbo died May 30, 1998, in Poulsbo. She was born icon June 1, 1913, in Ballard. She attended Ballard High School. In 1934, she married icon Jospeh Olson in Poulsbo. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Olson owned The Royal Beauty Studio in Seattle. She later worked at the Poulsbo Sons of Norway for 21 years. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Nutter of Poulsbo; a sister, Dorothy Nelson of Bremerton; and one grandchild. Magnus Jensen
Magnus "Walt" J. Jensen, 71, of Port Orchard died May 30, 1998, at his home. He was born icon April 7, 1927, in Chehalis. He attended Chehalis High School and Chehalis Community College. On Feb. 14, 1995, he married icon Donna A. Zimmerman in Maui, Hawaii. Mr. Jensen established Jensens Smoked Meats & Fish in Bremerton and worked for 44 years as a meat and fish processer, retiring in 1986. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Michael of Seattle, Matthew of Sumner and Mark of Port Orchard; a daughter, Brenda Jensen-Zener of Bremerton; his former wife, Dorothy Jensen; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Hirschi was a trimmer with the Pope & Talbot sawmill. Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Patsy Delapp of Poulsbo; a brother, Fred of Oakridge, Ore.; a sister, Ida Faler of Poulsbo; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Jewel Walker
Jewel F. Walker, 91, of Seattle died May 31, 1998, in Seattle. She was born icon Feb. 23, 1907, in Hector, Ark. She attended college in Texas. Mrs. Walker taught school for two years in Texas. She worked as a cook for Poulsbo Elementary School for 23 years, retiring in 1968. Survivors include a son, Melvin of Hoquim; two daughters, Lillian Schmidt and June Keefer, both of Seattle; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband, Penrose, preceded her in death on March 26, 1978. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. June 3 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Dean Dunn
Dean E. Dunn Sr., 89, died May 26, 1998, in Gig Harbor. He was born icon April 5, 1909, in Forest Hill, La. He was a high school graduate. On Nov. 12, 1965, he married icon his wife, Jane, in Texas. Mr. Dunn served in the Navy from 1927 to 1955, retiring as a LCDR. He later worked as manager and treasurer of the Houston T.E.C. Federal Credit Union until retirement. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary Covello of Worcester, Mass.; a son, Dean Jr. of Bremerton; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and Florence Ladrie, his former wife and mother of his children, of Portsmouth, N.H. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. June 4 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Glen Hudson
Glen Dean Hudson, 71, of Hansville, died May 28, 1998. He was born icon June 11, 1926. Mr. Hudson served with the merchant marines. He later worked with Metropolitan Life Insurance Sales, until retirement. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Gertrude "Tiny"; four children, Greg, Nick, Pat and Becky; his mother, Fern; a sister, Gladys Foss; a brother, Denis; and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. June 4 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 7076 NE South St., Suquamish. A committal will follow in the Hansville Cemetery.
