Elias J. Wipf “Eli”
Born October 12, 1921 in Chasley, ND to Elias E. M. and Anna Wipf; passed away October 4, 2001. Eli, a long time resident of Tacoma, ran his own business, Wipf Ornamental Iron until he retired. He served in the Navy and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ray C. Roberts, Post 969. He loved to hunt and fish in his younger years. Eli is survived by daughter, Penny East; son, Gary L. Wipf; daughter- in-law, Sally Wipf; grandsons, Mark Wipf and Mike Erb; sisters, Violet Stratman, Mathilda “Tillie” Hammond, Ida Cracker and their families. Family and friends will miss him and his independent ways. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 12, 2001 at 3 PM in the Aspen Chapel, Celebration of Live Center, Mountain View Funeral Home. Fonzo B. Williams
Fonzo was born icon in Ellijay, GA on June 10, 1919 and passed away on Oct. 5, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. Beloved husband of 56 years to Barbara. Devoted and caring father to sons, Scott, Randy and Barney and special grandfather to Jeff, Andy, Randy, Julie, Quinn and Xander; great-granddaughter, Aleksiya; and brother to Jay and Russell. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1940 to 1970. Throughout his life he enjoyed many interests and excelled at everything he did. He was always kind and gentle. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. May you rest peacefully in heaven - you will always be in our hearts. There will be a visitation for Fonzo on Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Mt. View Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lakewood at noon on Wed., Oct. 10, and the burial service will be held at the Tahoma National Cemetery icon at 2:00 PM.

Olea Mae Donnelly
Mae, 81, passed away Oct. 5, 2001 in Lakewood, WA. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 50 years, Donald E. Donnelly, her family and friends. She was an avid bowler and devoted mother to daughter, Janice Strickland (Jay III) and son, Don (Linda). Mae was a very special grandmother to Brian, Catherine and Jay IV. She is survived by her sisters, Eileen Hawk, Elma Odegard and Roine Allred. Mae was born icon in Moreland, ID, raised in American Falls and resided in Lakewood. Marlene F. Messer
Marlene F. Messer died Friday, October 5, 2001 at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness with emphysema. Born Marlene Frances Stewart to Frank and Lucille Stewart on May 16, 1937 in Tacoma, Washington. Marlene married icon her high school sweetheart, Jack Messer, on Oct. 24, 1953. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on Oct. 24, 1998. Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and her parents, Frank and Lucille Stewart. Marlene will be best remembered for her work as a gracious waitress, a wonderful homemaker and a loving mom and grandma. She is survived by her children, Linda Holt-Ryan (Peter Ryan), Cindy (Eric) Nelson, Mike (Kathy) Messer and Sherri (Mike) DeYoung; grandchildren, Jason Holt, Jeremy and Kevin Nelson, Jerad Messer, Nichole Holt, Kreig DeYoung, Justin Messer and Jennifer DeYoung and beloved pet, “Precious”. Rose B. Hoover
Rose B. Hoover, 91, born icon June 24, 1910 in Tacoma, died October 5, 2001. She was the beloved wife of Melvin Lewis Hoover, Sr. and mother to Melvin Lewis Hoover, Jr. In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by: daughters- in-law, Mary Hoover and Alice Taft; 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives not mentioned but loved. Rose Hoover’s tender heart loved and cared for many. She always thought of others before herself and gave unselfishly to many. “She will be loved always and missed. We look forward to the day when we are reunited once again.” Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery. Rose C. Ferderer (Rosie)
Rose C. Ferderer, age 67, a longtime Tacoma resident went to be with her Lord, Wednesday, October 3, 2001. She was born icon September 30, 1934. She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael Joseph and Joe. Surviving family includes her husband, George; daughters, Pam of Fallon, Nevada; Sandy and Tina; son, Neil; stepdaughter, Elaine; stepson, Mark; 2 sisters, Elaine and Arlene, both of California; brother, Bob of Oregon; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosie was loved by all of her family and friends. “She is now an angel in heaven.” Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 9, 2001, 1:00 PM at the Mountain View Celebration of Life Building. Visitation will be Monday (TODAY) 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Tuesday morning until 11:30 AM. A reception will follow the service at AMVETS, 5717 So. Tyler in Ta- coma. Stuart E. Kowalsky, Jr.
Stuart, 53, passed away suddenly Sept. 27. He was born icon on July 10, 1948 to Stuart and Elizabeth (Royer) Kowalsky in Hartford, CT. Stuart became a resident of WA in 1965, when he was discharged from the Army. He married icon Donna and moved to Yelm in 1978. Stuart was a Plumber Foreman for the Civil Service and was later promoted to an Estimator. He was co-proprietor of Nisqually Valley Restaurant in Yelm and also had a long career as a Service Manager working for Tveten RV, Korum RV, and Puyallup Chevrolet/Subaru. Stuart was co-founder and President of Seed Faith Ministries, helping the orphans of Uganda. He was set in as an Elder at over 350 churches throughout Africa. He was also past President and Board Member of Olympia Union Gospel Mission and was involved in Prison, Youth and Street Ministries. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Stuart’s passion was ministering over people, no problem was too great or too small. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Donna Kowalsky, Yelm; children, Sheryl (Matt) Battle, Kennewick; Homer (Debbie) Hillis, Yelm; Patty (Brad) Neff, Kennewick; Paul (Shannon) Brown, Fort Sill, OK; Sandy Hammock, Yelm; Kristie (Mario) Rodriguez, Tacoma; and David Carlson, Yelm; grandchildren, Neil (Jamie), Jim, April, Les, Eric, Chris, Josh, Becky, Racheal, Brandy, John Dylan, Levi, Lezah, Jacob, Racheal and Joel; great-grandchildren, Maddisyn, Kaytelyn and Alazia; his mother and father, sister, Elizabeth; and brother Frenchie of Hartford, CT. Memorial services were held Oct. 2. Stuart will be laid to rest in Uganda, where his wife will continue their work. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Seed Faith Ministries.

Tamara Lynn Collier
Age 37, of Tacoma, passed away October 3, 2001 from an extended illness. She is survived by her two children, daughter Brandy and son Brandon, and granddaughter Foua, of Tacoma; two sisters, Tina of Arlington, WA and Teresa of Tucson, AZ; two brothers, Leroy and Lance of Tacoma, WA; and her maternal grandmother, Frances Barlindal of Port Townsend, WA. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, October 13th at 4:00 pm at "Our Father’s House" church located at 4717 111th St. SW in Tacoma. Tammy, you will always be in our hearts.

Dorothy M. Davison
Dorothy May Davison of Puyallup died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. She was 86. Born May 10, 1915 in Tacoma to John and Katherine (Johnston) Panter, she graduated from Lincoln High School in Taco- ma in 1933. She worked at Kress’ until her marriage to Bernie E. Davison on July 31, 1937. She was active in the Lincoln Ladies’ luncheon group, Birthday Club from Arlington Grade School P.T.A., South Hill swim group and for several years, served as Sunshine Chairman of her Women’s Circle at the Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was a long time member. She loved to garden, to travel, and was an accomplished oil painter. She is survived by her two sons, William of Hoquiam and Donald of Gig Harbor, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie, in 1974, and her daughter, Diane Wallace, in 1997. Viewing will be at Mountain View Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14th. Funeral service will be held in Mountain View’s Garden Chapel at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15th. Graveside service will follow. Reception will be held at the Country Dale Club House at 12313 - 123rd St. Ct. Jack Dean Christensen
Jack was born icon May 26, 1938 in Centralia, WA and was raised in Rainier. He was a long time resident of Eatonville. He passed away quietly at home surrounded by family and friends on Oct. 9, 2001. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Joan, and son Jack junior. He is survived by his loving wife Delores; his son Steve (Sally) Christensen of Eatonville, son Torck (Beverly) Christensen of Burien, daughter-in-law Gloria Christensen of Puyallup; 7 grandchildren; stepchildren David Kelly, Bob (Linda) Kelly of Los Angeles, CA, Rod (Karen) Kelly of Eatonville, Pat Kelly of Morton, and their children; brothers Jim and Don, and their wives. Jack worked in the logging industry until an illness caused him to change his profession to a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1998. He was a member of Eatonville Eagles, Puyallup Elks and the Yelm Moose Lodge. His passion for the game of golf has kept him busy, along with his beautiful gardens. As an avid baseball fan, he enjoyed watching the Mariners. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services. The family requests contributions to the local Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. James D. Kell
James D. Kell, 90, passed away Monday, October 8, 2001. He was born icon in Seneca, South Carolina on October 10, 1910. He served for 32 years in the U.S. Army, after which he worked at U.S. Oil & Refining Co. in Tacoma, WA until he retired in 1975. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Franziska; two sons, James D. Kell Jr. of El Paso, TX and G. Thomas Kell of Los Angeles, CA; four grandchildren, Cristel Edens of El Paso, TX, Orlando Kell of Austin, TX, Caitlyn and Casey Kell of Los Angeles, CA. A devoted husband, father and grandfather and servant of God, he will be sorely missed. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 13 at 3 PM at First Baptist Church of Lakewood, 5602 112th St. SW, Lakewood, WA; Reverent Walt Kelley officiating. Lyle N. Swedberg
Lyle N. Swedberg, born icon August 3, 1920 in Minnesota, passed away peacefully October 10, 2001 in Tacoma. He was a charter member of the American Institute of Architecture, Southwest Washington Chapter; he designed Tacoma Community College, the Public Health Building and the Gas Company. He was a former member of the Tacoma City Planning Commission and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Lyle is survived by wife Delores J. Swedberg; sons Dohn (Chris) Swedberg and Dr. Paul (Daphne) Swedberg of CA; daughter Susan Swedberg of CA; brother Milton Swedberg of MN; sister Mildred Martinson of SD; grandchildren Wesley and Nicole Swedberg of CA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16 at 1 p.m. at Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 2215 Sixth Ave., with interment icon to follow at New Tacoma Cemetery. Merrill (Steve) Edward Stevens CWO4 US Army (Ret)
Merrill passed away Oct. 9, 2001 in Lakewood, WA in the comfort of his home. He was born icon Sept. 21, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the son of Charles Edward and Harriet Alma Stevens. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles (Bud), thirteen years his senior. His family moved to Washington State in 1925. Merrill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Jeannette (maiden name Westlund); daughter Kathy Smith (s/o Rich) of San Diego; son Gary Stevens (wife Karen) of Che- welah, WA; daughters Maureen Crowley (husband Lyle) of Vancouver, WA, Shanta Stevens of Lakewood, WA; grandchildren Scott and Shawn (wife Heather) Smith, Christie, Jason and Heather Harrison and Sara Stevens, and Jeremiah and Rachel Crowley; great-grandchildren Joseph, Rebekah, Maya and Jakob Smith; and faithful pets Rudy and Pony. Merrill had recently celebrated his 80th birthday with his wife and four children by his side. In addition to being a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Merrill served in various branches of the service for a period of 32 years. He was an aviator in WWII, the Korean conflict and two tours in Vietnam. Merrill received numerous commendations and medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Gold Star in Korea, and the Bronze Star in Vietnam. Graveside service and inurnment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th Street, Kent, 1:30 PM, Monday, Oct. 15th. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Franciscan Hospice.

Pauline (Herring) Moore
Pauline Moore passed away 9-21-01 in Gilbert, AZ. She was born icon 8-30-18 in Stratford, OK to John and Lee Nora Herring. After many years in Stockton, CA, she moved to Tacoma, WA in 1984. Her love of the desert climate inspired her relocation to AZ one year ago. Pauline is survived by her children, Ronald L. (wife Claudia) Moore, Tacoma, WA; Barbara Moore, Stockton, CA; sisters Goldena Wallis and Jewell Sexton in OK; 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
