Brown.
She was preceded in Cemetery. A Memorial Reception
will follow the graveside service at
Westford’s Broadway Hall, 1300
Broadway.
Verne Thomas Swartwood

Verne Thomas Swartwood born December 7, 1910 in Sumas to David
and Alta (Thomas) Swartwood. Shortly
after that, the family moved to Maple
Falls. At the age of 12, they moved to
Bellingham and Verne attended Fairhaven
High School and played center tackle on
the football team.
He worked in trucking for Shetler Farms
until enlisting in the service. In
September, 1941, he was discharged and
came back home only to wake on his
birthday to the bombing of Pearl
Harbor. He went back to his same unit
and served in the Europe Theater during
WWII. Verne death by his wife,
Gladys, in 1988. Being full of life,
Verne found love again with Velma
Whitney in 1991. They had a double
wedding with his daughter, Julie and
Lee Mitchell in the same year.
Verne was a man who loved to make you
laugh and smile. He was full of jokes,
and his favorite day was April Fool’s
Day! This side of him will be
especially missed. We all will
remember his laughing, teasing, and
caring ways. Verne was a role model
for all of his grandchildren and his
daughter. He was also loving no matter
what, listening to all, and judging no
one for their faults. He was a BIG
Mariner’s fan, watching or listening to
all of their games, passionately
rooting them on. The family would
prefer small live plants instead of
flowers.
Verne is survived by his wife Velma
Swartwood; daughter Julie Mitchell;
grandchildren Colin and wife Meredith
Koehler, Brandon and wife Sarah
Koehler, Amber, Andrea, Stephanie, and
Owen Koehler. He also leaves his great-
grandchildren Justin Perrine and Alexis
Pollack; Velma’s children Doug and wife
Rita Buatte, Dianne and husband Jack
Crosslin, Larry and wife Linday Buatte;
and grandchildren Kaycee, Carly,
Ashley, and Ben.
The Memorial Service will be held at
St. John’s Lutheran Church at 3:00 PM
on Wednesday, May 5.
Patrick Eugene Peck

Patrick E. Peck, age 53 of Bellingham,
born January
15, 1951 in Seattle to William & June
(Gray) Peck. Patrick enjoyed
woodcarving and totem pole carving, and
was involved with the carving of the
totem pole at Highline Community
College.
Patrick was preceded in passed away on April 26th,
2004 in Bellingham.
Services are pending at a later date.
Survived by friends Robert Smith, Kathy
& David Gabrieal, John Marden, Jessica
Marden, Erin Marden, along with
numerous other friends.
Margaret Bonnie Schramer

Margaret N. “Bonnie” Schramer
Margaret N. “Bonnie” Schramer, 82, born Margaret Ellen Naughton in
Geneva, Illinois. Raised in St.
Charles, Illinois, she was educated at
Mount St. Mary’s Academy in St.
Charles. On December 25, 1941, she
married for sixty-one years,
they lived in Illinois, South Carolina,
California, and Washington and raised
nine children.
She was a civilian clerk for the U.S.
Army in the 1940s. In 1966 she became a
real estate broker and eventually a
Vice-President for a mortgage loan
company. She was an avid reader,
adventurous cook, talented painter, and
engaging storyteller. She was a
founding member of the Reginas, a
Catholic women’s charity in Lakewood,
California.
Her husband Joseph H. died in 2003. She
is survived by sons James J. (Julia) of
Youngstown, Ohio, Stephen E. (Mary) of
Camano Island, Washington, Daniel T.
(Cathy) of Bellingham, Washington,
Michael J. (Debbie) of Bellingham,
Joseph A. (Heidi) of Bellingham,
Patrick W. (Sheri) of Ukiah,
California, Richard A. of Willits,
California; daughters Mary M. Bleedorn
of Poulsbo, Washington, and Laura
(Steve) Guidas of San Juan Capistrano,
California; a brother, James B. (Mary)
Naughton of St. Charles, Illinois; a
sister Nancy (Albert) Stopka of Panama
City, Florida; eighteen grandchildren;
and four great grandchildren.
Visitation at Westford Funeral Home in
Bellingham, Washington will be held on
Friday, April 16th from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m., with a Rosary service at 7:30
p.m. at Westford’s. Funeral services
are 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 20th at St.
Elizabeth’s of Hungary Catholic Church,
Desert Hot Springs, California followed
by burial at Desert Memorial Park and a
reception. California arrangements by
Desert Hot Springs Mortuary (760) 329-
8738. Memorial donations may be made to
the Reginas and the Whatcom County
(Washington) Hospice.
