Melanie Sarah Beaver
12/27/1966 - 9/18/2004
Melanie S. Beaver, age 37 of Everson,
born December 27,
1966 in Seattle, WA to James & Barbara
(DeLay) Beaver. Melanie has been a
volunteer for the Allied Arts of
Bellingham, and enjoyed arts and music,
especially playing the flute.
She was preceded in passed away
Thurs. Sept. 23, 2004 in Bellingham.
She was married Charles
L. Harris. As a kindergarten-1st
grade teacher in Canoga Park, CA, she
was very active in education reform in
the 1950s and 1960s. She was
instrumental in instituting one of the
first teachers’ strikes against the
L.A. School District securing the
support of both parents and educators
alike. She was an avid reader of
mystery novels and retired in 1975 to
Whatcom County after teaching 28 years
at the same school, Canoga Park
Elementary. She was very active in the
South Lake Whatcom Fire District 18
Women’s Auxiliary, the Silver Run
Grange and the Skagit Valley Grange.
She also was an active participant in
the local Health Support Center in
Bellingham and donated time and money
to many of her favorite charities.
She was preceded in born Oct.
3, 1909 in Martin, North Dakota, to
Adolph and Magdelina (Bentz) Kalk.
Vern was death by sister Vi and
brother Bruce. Survived by wife
Rosella; son Ernest and a grandson.
Brothers Bill, Bert (Lois), Ken
(Edith), Ray, sisters Vera, Adeline
(Mack), Lorraine and Eunice (John).
Visitation will be held at Westford
Funeral Home on Wed., Sept. 29 from 1 –
5 p.m., with a Vigil Service following
at 7 p.m. . Mass of Christian Burial
will be held Thurs., Sept. 30 at 10:30
a.m. at Assumption Church. Graveside
Committal will follow at Greenacres
with military honors by American Legion
Post #7. Memorials may be made to
Assumption Building Fund or American
Legion Roof Fund (1688 W. Bakerview,
Bellingham, WA 98226). Thanks to the
staff at St. Francis for their loving
care and to our relatives and dear
friends for their support.
Helen Martha Milling
8/14/1920 - 8/24/2004
Helen Martha (Koivu) Milling born August 14,
1920 to Henry Aldric and Charlotte
Amanda (Erickson) Koivu, the last of
five children. Her family’s first
language was Finnish, her father being
married in 1942, had two children and
through the years lived in San
Francisco, Selma, Southern California
and Phoenix. Helen lived in Bellingham
for five years following the deaths of
both her husband and son (Ralph Sr.
and Ralph Jr. “Butch”) in 1999.
She is survived by her daughter
Carolyne Milling and son-in-law John
Wiley, grandson Jason and
granddaughters Gillian and Tiffany.
Also included in the Milling Clan are
Christine Richter and Mike Box.
Helen’s 94 year old brother, Albert,
lived in Michigan.
Helen was well loved by long-ago
neighbors in Phoenix and nieces and
nephews in Alabama, Arizona,
California, Florida and Michigan. She
has received many calls, cards and
letters from them on birthdays and
holidays. Helen enjoyed walks and
picnics at Boulevard Park and Lake
Padden, tea at Abbey Garden, Mexican
food and reading.
The family wishes to thank gratefully
the staff at Mt. Baker Care Center and
Summit Place for amazing love and good
care. They’re the best. Donations can
be made, in the name of Helen Milling,
to Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom
County, 495 E. Bakerview Road,
Bellingham 98226.
A Memorial Ceremony will be held at
Westford’s Broadway Hall (formerly the
Aftermath Club), 1300 Broadway, on
Wed., September 1st at 4:00 pm,
followed by a reception in the hall.
