Alice J. Larsen
March 19, 1918 - August 10, 2007
Birthplace: Ferndale, Washington
Alice J. Larsen, 89, of Ferndale passed away peacefully at the family farm on Friday, August 10, 2007.
Born March, 19, 1918 in Ferndale to Swiss immigrants, Louis and Mary Burgler, Alice lived her entire married life on the farm she loved.
She was a hard worker and very independent, boarding a train when she was in her early 20's with her friend and heading to New York City, where she worked as a waitress.
Hence her saying, "I've been a waitress all my life, from here to Times Square."
She returned home and worked at Helen Booth's diner in Bellingham, where she met her husband, Paul.
They were married on Sept. 9, 1946.
They built their farm together, clearing land and steadily increasing their Holstein dairy herd.
Paul was in the Army Reserves and every Thursday evening, he would have meetings in Bellingham.
Alice would accompany him with a car full of farm fresh eggs to peddle to various customers in Bellingham, while Paul was at his meetings.
She baked her own bread and visitors could always stop in and grab a homemade cookie out of the cookie jar and have a cup of coffee while looking at Mt. Baker from her kitchen window.
She loved people and if she didn't know you…she would eventually!!
She was full of spirit and even in her early 80's, she entered the cow milking contest at the Lynden Fair.
She and Paul traveled to South America, South Africa, New Zealand, China and in 1998, went to the 50th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France.
She loved to visit, whether it be stopping by with her 55 Buick Roadmaster, or calling on the phone.
She later opened her home for a bed and breakfast and has made many friends who came to stay at the farm.
Everyone "knew Alice," and she always had a story for you.
The family would like to thank Dr. Goo and his staff, Alderwood Park Convalescent Center staff and Visiting Angels.
Also, a special thank you to the many friends of Alice’s who called on her, whether it was with a phone call or a visit, it was greatly appreciated. Together, she and Paul raised three children, Jim (Chris) Larsen of Ferndale, Dick Larsen of Vancouver, WA, and daughter, Helen (Larry) Birchall of Ferndale.
She has two grandsons, Joe Larsen of Grandview, WA, and Steve Larsen of Ferndale, WA.
She is also survived by her brother, Frank Burgler of Ferndale, and sister, Pauline Charlton of Bellingham, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Ferndale Heritage Society, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sons of Norway and American Legion Auxiliary.
Memorials made be made to any of these, along with Whatcom Hospice or a favorite charity.
Visitation will be Monday, August 20, from 4 to 7 PM, at Moles Funeral Home-Ferndale, 2039 Main Street.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, August 21, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ferndale.
