Gerrit Jansen, Jr.
Gerrit Jan Jansen, Jr. of Lynden, passed away in Bellingham on Monday, June 10, 2001. He was 84.
Gerrit was born to Gerrit and Johanna Jansen on Oct. 21, 1916 in Nome, N.D. He had been a resident of Whatcom County for 70 years.
Mr. Jansen married Vivian Clarke on Dec. 1, 1941. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1991. He was a retired veteran of World War II. Mr. Jansen was a member of the First Congregational Church in Bellingham for 50 years and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Bellingham during his 45 years as the owners of Jansen's Floral. He retired in 1977. He belonged to the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #194 and served on the Salvation Army board of directors.
His hobbies included gardening and flying. He was a licensed pilot who flew Cessna airplanes for 25 years.
Mr. Jansen was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack J. Jansen, Evert Jansen and Louis Jansen; and a sister, Joann Zeman.
Gerrit is survived by two daughters, Linda M. Smoots and husband John of Everett and Gayle A. Tangeman and husband Dave of Olympia; two grandsons, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter; four brothers, Henry Jansen of Lynden, Albert Jansen and Peter Jansen, both of Bellingham and William Jansen of Bellevue; three sisters, Sophia Louise Lich, Gertrude Blondheim and Marie McGinnis, all of Bellingham; and numerous other family members.
Graveside services were held June 25 at Greenacres Memorial Park followed by a memorial service Wednesday at the First Congregational Church in Bellingham with Pastor Donel McClellan officiating.
Arrangements were by Greenacres Funeral Home in Ferndale.
Agnes Means
Following a private graveside service, a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Birch Bay Bible Community Church, 7039 Jackson Rd., Blaine, for Agnes G. Means of Everson. Pastor Jim Totzke will be officiating.
Mrs. Means passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001. She was 90.
She was born to John and Annie Rodgers in Appam, N.D., on Nov. 6, 1910. Her family moved to Whatcom County in 1925. She attended schools in Lynden and Ferndale, as well as Bellingham Normal School. She worked for the Charles Larrabee family as a nanny for many years and was a licensed beautician later in life.
She married Joseph A. Means on Aug. 30, 1935.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Brian and Norman; and three sisters, Grace, Mabel and Ima.
Mrs. Means is survived by her daughters, Adele Gienger and husband Loren of Blaine and Marilyn Bennett and husband Ron of Everson; a son, Steve Means and wife Diane of Bellingham; one grandson, four granddaughters, and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Clarence "Bud" Hess

Clarence L. “Bud” Hess, age 78, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at his home in Bellingham, WA. He was born October 19, 1928, to Helen (Miller) and James “Roy” Hess in Auburn, WA. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1946 and married Pearl Bland in 1951. He was employed by Northern Pacific Railway for nine years and then became a field engineer for the Burroughs Corporation from 1955 until his retirement. Upon his retirement, Bud enjoyed his involvement with his horses at the Cloverdale harness races. He loved to travel, especially on cruises throughout the world.
Bud was a member of the Bellingham Senior Center, the Elks Club, and a charter member of the Kulshan Kiwanis Club. Over the years he assisted with many community service projects including: helping at Bridgett Collins, working with the Boy Scouts, volunteering at his children’s schools, cleaning trash along the freeway, and helping with various projects through the Kiwanis Club. He was associated with the Garden Street United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Pearl; son Mark; and sister Carol Andersen.
He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Thomas; granddaughters Andrea and Erika Thomas; sister Clare Wanless (partner Richard Aiken); brother James Hess (wife Kaylene); special friend Fran Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ray Scougale
Ray Scougale of Bellingham, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2001. He was 89.
He had been a resident of Whatcom County for 62 years. Mr. Scougale was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Everett, to James and Grace Scougale.
Mr. Scougale owned Shuksan Electric in Bellingham, until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Scougale served one term on the city council in Ferndale, before moving to Bellingham. He was a member of the Ferndale Lodge #264 F&AM, Bellingham Valley Scottish Rite, Nile Shrine, Bellingham Yacht Club and Bellingham Country Club.
He married Marie Thompson at her family home in Snoqualmie, on Dec. 31, 1937. She preceded him in death on July 25, 1998. During World War II they moved to Bremerton, where Mr. Scougale worked in the Navy shipyard and after the war moved to Whatcom County.
Mr. Scougale's most recent residence was at the Parkway Chateau in Bellingham.
Ray is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel with a Masonic ritualistic service to be conducted. Entombment will be at Greenacres Memorial Park.

Georgia Kostanoski
Georgia A. Kostanoski of Ferndale, passed away at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center on Aug. 1, 2001. She was 83.
In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held.
A daughter of Stanley and Mira (Kimes) Klinger, Georgia was born in Erie, Pa., on Oct. 5, 1917. She grew up and spent most of her adult years in Geneva, Ohio, where she worked at Key Bank for 20 years. She moved to Ferndale in 1980 to spend her retirement years with her family.
Georgia enjoyed cooking, working crossword puzzles and playing cards with friends. She attended First Baptist Church in Ferndale.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Kostanoski and wife Kathy of Byesville, Ohio, and Stan Kostanoski and wife Phyllis of Ferndale; four grandchildren, Kristine Smith and husband Kevin of Ferndale, Scott Kostanoski and Cheryl Kostanoski, both of Seattle, and Brian Kostanoski of Byesville, Ohio; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Wood.

Louisa Neubauer
Louisa Neubauer of Blaine, passed away in Bellingham on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001. She was 89.
Mrs. Neubauer was born in Stark County, N.D., on Sept. 13, 1911. She lived in Antelope, N.D.
On April 2, 1928, she married Albert Neubauer. They later moved to Blaine where they were farmers. Louisa worked on the farm and loved gardening and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Ervin Neubauer.
Survivors include a son, Leo Neubauer of Bothell; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service was held Tuesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale.

Allison Kristine Hahnel
December 15, 1977 - February 13, 2007
Birthplace: Seattle, Washington
Allison Kristine Hahnel, age 29, of Lynden, died at the Christian Healthcare Center on Tuesday, February 13 at 2:00 PM. Allison was surrounded by her loving family and community.
Allison was born in Seattle, WA, on December 15th 1977 to Brian and Meredith Hahnel. She was born two months premature, and was soon after diagnosed with cerebral palsy. With the support of her family and friends, Allison was raised and lived in Whatcom County. Over the course of her life she was a light to all around her. Everyone she met was her next best friend. Allison and her family were active supporters of the Whatcom Infant Stimulation Program, United Cerebral Palsy, the Whatcom Transit Authority, Self-Advocates In Leadership (SAIL), People First, The Ark, the Free Wheelchair Mission, World Vision, and many others. From her early years in Awana through her adult life, Allison was surrounded by Christian community, and she grew a sincere faith and hope for a life in Heaven.
As her 29-year fight with cerebral palsy has now come to an end, Allison is now safely in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her memory will be honored and cherished by her family and friends.
Allison and her family would like to honor the following people and organizations for their ongoing support and care: Allison’s life-long pediatrician Dr. Dale Heisinger, the Christian Health Care Center family in Lynden, Evergreen North Cascades, the Shriners Hospital, Children’s Orthopedic Hospital, the University of Washington Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital.
Allison was deeply loved by her parents Steve & Meredith Moyer, Brian & Elaine Hahnel, her brother, Brandon Hahnel, as well as many other family members.
A Memorial Service will be held in Allison’s honor Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 1:00PM, at North County Christ The King Community Church, 123 N. 17th St., Lynden.

Ethel A. Riddle Simonson Fosnot, age 79, of Bellingham, born in
Lynden, Washington on January 26, 1925 to Tracy and Rusha (Price) Riddle.
Ethel is a lifetime resident of Whatcom County and a member of Bellingham Covenant Church.
Ethel is preceded in Cemetery in Ferndale on
Monday, June 21 at 12 Noon followed by a Memorial Service at 1:30 PM at Bellingham Covenant Church with Pastor Brent Allen officiating.
A reception will follow at the church.
Arlene Fay Fischer

Arlene Fay Fischer, age 85, born to Walter and Lilly Montgomery in
Ottawa, Kansas, on May 1, 1919.
After graduating from high school in 1937, she came to Bellingham in 1939 and has resided here since.
Arlene met and married for 56 years, spending many of those years snowbirding with friends in Indio, CA.
They raised four children: Frances, Robert, Barbara, and Scott.
Her faith in God and her family were most important to her.
She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Bellingham.
She will be remembered by those who loved her as a courageous and caring woman facing life’s difficulties with humor and perseverance.
Arlene worked in Whatcom County, at many jobs during her life; most important to her was that of a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She also worked at Morse Hardware, the offices of Dr. Frere, Dr. Heid and Dr. Greene and for the Blaine School District.
Arlene was preceded in passed away Monday, June 7th in
Bellingham.
She was married Robert W. Duffin in 1943.
During Robert’s 30-year military career they traveled and moved across the country.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and fly-fishing.
Ruth was a skilled artist and attended Chicago Institute of Art, and as a vocalist she sang on the radio and with big bands in Chicago.
She loved camping and was fond of all animals.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Robert Duffin of Bellingham; son, Michael Duffin of Bellingham; son, Robert (Robbi) Duffin Jr. of Texas; daughter, Catherine Duffin of Colorado; daughter, Kerri (John) White of Lake Stevens; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
