Dorothy Lucille Rinehart
8/24/1915 - 1/31/2006
Born August 24, 1915 in Newago County, MI.
Died January 31, 2006 in Bellingham.
Born a farm girl, she was an intelligent and perceptive student who had to leave school at age 13, because her parents could not afford the $25 annual tuition. In her late teens, at the height of the Depression, she left a loving home and hoped to take guitar lessons, but due to the economics of the time, was unable to pursue her dream. She did maintain a lifelong love of music. As a responsible and independent young woman, she kept her own apartment and car through factory work in the larger communities near her home. At the outbreak of WWII, she joined the ranks of the many women who made invaluable contributions to the war effort on the home front. The popular image of "Rosie the Riveter" fit her personally, as she worked on the riveting crews that built many of the 'B' series bombers used in the War. After the War, she met a young veteran named Jack Rinehart, recently arrived from the Pacific battlefront, who became her loving and loyal husband for 58 years. She was a caring and supportive mother who had a natural teaching ability, always ready to listen to concerns and problems with an understanding ear. She was a great respecter of the lifestyle and sensibilities of Native American cultures and was a great nature lover who had many pets throughout her life. One of her great pleasures in her later life, was working on craft projects with Jack. She is survived by her husband, Jack, her son, Alan and his wife, Janice, her older sister, Beulah and grandchildren, Simon and Anna.
