James A. Lackey
2/27/1927 - 8/2/2006

James Albert Lackey born
February 27, 1927 in Ontario, Oregon.
He was raised in Ontario and lived many
years in Seattle where he worked as an
engineer at Boeing Co. He has lived in
Bellingham and Tucson, Arizona with his
wife Maribelle for the last two years.
Maribelle, his wife of 59 years, was
the one woman in his life and his true
love. All who knew Jim know that
Maribelle was everything to him.
Jim’s life is most clearly defined by
his love for the children in his life,
whether it be his own children, his
grandchildren, or the many other young
people who were fortunate enough to
have grown up nearby. He has always
been very proud of his children and
their accomplishments, and the families
that each one of them raised.
From a young age, Jim had a connection
with the outdoors and with sports. He
was always popular with the kids that
lived nearby, and although he was a
mentor to them, he could always relate
to them at a level that made him like a
peer. As his children got older, he
had time to spend with other activities
such as travel and bird watching. Even
as he aged, however, his love for
children and the outdoors did not fade,
and he shared the same passions with
his grandchildren that he did with his
own children. He had a strong sense of
knowing right from wrong, and this was
evident not only with his words but
with his actions. His devotion and
dependability shaped the lives of
nearly countless young people in a way
that will never be forgotten.
Jim was truly a renaissance man. Aside
from the influences he made on the
lives of young people, he was very
accomplished in many fields. He was,
by profession, an aeronautical
engineer. During his engineering
career, he elevated himself to a
nationally recognized and respected
position, recording patents as an
inventor of aeronautical machinery.
His engineering passion began as a
child, when he would spend hours
meticulously crafting airplanes both as
models and for flying. This passion of
airplane modeling would continue
throughout his life. He also used his
craftsman skills to build exceptional
cabinetry and other furniture that will
be used for many generations to come.
Jim was an extremely skilled painter
and sculptor. He was always happy to
give his creations to family and
friends, often with an upbeat limerick
attached. After retirement, Jim spent
countless hours on the genealogy of the
Lackey family with a great deal of
success, and has taken research trips
to eastern United States and to
Europe. In addition, he was an
exceptional historian, with a special
fondness for the Malheur County region
of eastern Oregon, where he was the
editor of the Malheur Country
publications. Jim’s desire to learn
and embrace the world around him never
faded. He was always very eager to stay
current with the latest technology,
whether it was to help with his
research or to keep close contact with
family. Jim did not casually partake
upon his endeavors; he was incredibly
dedicated to absolutely everything that
he did. Once he began a project, there
was no doubt that the project would be
done soon and done correctly. He was a
very reliable man; a quality that
extended well beyond his material
crafts.
Despite all of his skills and
accomplishments, he truly lived for his
wife Maribelle and his children and
grandchildren. He will be most
remembered for his responsible and
dependable nature. He will be
remembered for the time he spent with
his family, whether it is with sports,
fishing, camping, or generally sharing
his wisdom with those around him. Jim
was a man who had a great influence on
the lives of those around him, and he
was deeply loved by many people. The
lives of people close to Jim are better
for having known him, and he will be
greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his wife Maribelle;
his children Rosemary Nelson and
husband Gary, Chet and wife Clara, Tom
and wife Lynn, and Bob and wife Susan;
and his grandchildren Jim, John, Roger,
Mark, Christina, Tyson, Walter, and
Donna. He was preceded in death by his
sister Betty, granddaughter Mary and
grandson Joseph.
There will be a private memorial
service for Jim’s family and friends.
