Markell Foote Kaiser
9/8/1944 - 4/30/2006
Markell Foote Kaiser, 61, wife and
mother, business and community leader,
born September 8, 1944 in the northern
suburbs of Chicago, where she grew up,
to Robert and Barbara Austin Foote.
Markell developed her love of music and
history at Vassar College, where both
her mother and grandfather were
trustees. She taught at the Shady Hill
School in Boston before marrying
Nicholas F. Kaiser (Nick), a Bellingham
native, in 1968. The U.S. Army sent
them to Indianapolis, Indiana where she
finished her master’s at Butler
University.
She soon switched from teaching to
motherhood and then, well-armed with a
professor’s mantra of “Math is fun,
Math is easy,” became a broker and
Nick’s partner in the mutual fund
industry. They spent twenty years
building a successful family and
business together. Markell’s community
activities centered on the Junior
League of Indianapolis. They settled
in Bellingham in 1989, where they built
a dream home and started new ventures
such as Saturna Capital.
Markell inspired all who knew her. Her
unusual balance of spontaneity,
organization, playfulness, and
intelligence led her to become engaged
in many venues. President of the St.
Joseph Hospital Foundation and member
of the hospital's finance committee,
past president of the Bellingham
Festival of Music and Western
Washington University's Foundation, and
house mother at St. Paul’s Episcopal
School, she directed the Kaiser's
philanthropic and real estate
activities. Markell kept beautiful,
vibrant homes in Bellingham, British
Columbia, and northern Wisconsin. She
entertained generously, making her
guests feel as she felt: like a queen
in her castle.
In addition to her husband Nick, she is
survived by two sisters, Marion R.
Foote and Helen (& Peter) Schloerb,
children Brooks Kaiser, Max (& Sarah)
Kaiser, Sarah (& Aaron) Brand, Jane (&
Terence) Carten, Emmeline (& Zachary
Williams) Kaiser, and new granddaughter
Mary Jane Kaiser.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s

Hospital Foundation. A Memorial
Service will be held at St. Paul’s
