Douglas Lee Russell
3/24/1936 - 3/2/2009
Douglas L. Russell was died on March 2, 2009
after a short illness. Doug grew up on
the Cedarville Rd. and attended Mt.
Baker High School. He loved the
outdoors and spent most of his life in
Alaska and Bellingham. He started out
logging at age 17, then worked in
construction, fishing, welding, for the
Alaska Pipeline, and most recently for
Smith Gardens in Bellingham. Doug

Carmen, and brothers George, Boyd,
Jerry, and Wally.
Our wonderful Husband, Dad, Papa, and
Friend went home to be with his savior,
Jesus Christ. We are all looking
forward to being together again
someday. A Memorial Service will be
held at Fountain Community Church on
Saturday, March 7 at 2:00.
Beverly W. Bishop
10/20/1927 - 2/16/2009
Beverly Bishop was married to Leonard
Bishop on April 2, 1949. They had four
children, Michael (Mary) Hudekoff;
Penny (Rick) Olson; Greg (Heather)
Bishop and Scott Bishop.
Beverly is survived by her husband of
sixty years, Leonard, and her sisters,
Jean Moore and Dorothy Shannon; their
children and numerous grandchildren.

Viola Gilford Munger
1/28/1915 - 3/1/2009
Viola Gilford (Mauler) Munger, age 94
passed on to glory March 1, 2009 with
her daughter, Linda and her niece, Loie
Haggen by her side. She was married Vernon L. Munger in Bellingham,
WA. They had 2 daughters, Charla Mae
and Linda Lou who were raised in
Alliance, NE.
Viola had her own ceramics shop in
Nebraska called Vi’s Ceramics. She was
also an accomplished seamstress, a
wonderful pianist and played the
organ. She loved the Lord and attended
Bible studies. Viola loved crossword
puzzles and walking. She enjoyed
spending time with her brothers and
sisters. They lost their youngest 13
year old sister, Betty, in 1937. Viola
became like a mother to the next
youngest sister, Evelyn Mauler who
death by her
husband and her daughter Charla Gies.
She is survived by her daughter Linda
Mandelberg; her beloved grandchildren
Larry Mandelberg (Nancy) of Sacramento,
CA, David Gies (Sue) of Custer, SD,
Nancy Garner (Max) of Guersey, WY,
Vicki Ganow (Marc) of Plantation, FL,
Stacey Darveau (Dustin) of Alliance,
NE, Rebecca Hill (Corey) of Mount
Vernon, WA; 11 great-grandchildren 5
great-great grandchildren; numerous
nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-
nephews.
For the last 4 years she had the great
joy of having great-grandchildren
Michael Ganow (11), Jessica Ganow (10)
and Casey Grosso-Hill (11) spend the
summers in her home. Jessica spent
many hours playing Skip-Bo with her.
She spent time watching Michael lay on
the floor while he lined up his army
men preparing for battle and all the
sounds of the game he made. She loved
listening to Casey play her violin. It
pleased her that someone in the family
appreciated music as much as she did.
They would go on her daily walks with
her and listen to her tell them of
family stories or to be aware of sights
and sounds around them. The newest
addition to the family Dylan Hill
brought her such joy. She cherished
having a new baby in the family. Her
love of desserts was passed on in fine
fashion as everyone in her family
loves “scotcharoos”.

Robert J. 'Bob' Curtis
3/3/1922 - 3/19/2009
Bob was married
Joyce Milham in June 1945 while
stationed at the Sandpoint Naval Air
Station in Seattle.
In 1946 Bob and Joyce moved to
Bellingham and operated Curtis Trucking
and “Y” Welding & Repair, where all of
the equipment and the equipment of many
other local businesses was maintained
and repaired. The shop was located at
the “Y” of the Y Road and Mt. Baker
Highway. He later started Shuksan
Hauling with his business partner of
many years, John Pettigrew. Bob was
also active in the Washington Trucking
Association and served one term as
president.
In 1975 the family moved to Fairbanks,
Alaska where Bob worked as a mechanic
for various companies involved with the
construction of the Alaska Pipeline.
He was also employed by the State of
Alaska as a supervisor of road
maintenance on the Dalton Highway from
the Yukon River to Prudhoe Bay. He
loved Alaska and often related stories
of his experiences there.
Bob and Joyce moved back to the family
farm in the Squalicum Valley in 1985
where they were both active in the
Squalicum Valley Water Association and
the Rome Grange. He tinkered in his
shop with equipment all of his life; a
true mechanical autodidact. He
continuously encouraged his sons and
grandchildren to embrace lifelong
learning.
He is survived by his wife Joyce of 63
years; brother Dale Curtis of Elk, WA;
sons Doug (Marilyn) Curtis of Tok, AK;
Jeff (Becky) Curtis of Bellingham; 6
grandchildren: Stephanie (Nick) Dazer
of Portland, OR; Laura Curtis and Dan
Khan of Las Cruces, NM; Michelle
(Cletus) Pippin of Dallas, TX; Robyn
Curtis of Seattle; Jon and Anna Curtis
of Bellingham. He also was blessed
with 6 cute great grandchildren. He
loved his family and was passionately
protective of all children.
The family wishes to thank all of the
thoughtful, professional caregivers at
the Highgate Cottage and Whatcom County
Hospice. Donations, if desired may be
made to Whatcom County Hospice.
At Bob’s request there will be no
service.
