Phyllis June Bernbaum Levin
6/7/1922 - 9/30/2002
Phyllis June Bernbaum Levin Born in Seattle, June 7, 1922. Phyllis
attended Montlake Grade School,
Garfield High School and the University
of Washington where she was a member of
Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority. She married
life in the Navy where Al was a blimp
pilot.
She and Al were deeply involved in the
civic and cultural life of Bellingham,
often together, but each with their own
accomplishments. Phyllis was involved
with Bellingham's Children's
Orthopedic, and was a founder and
charter member of the Sarah Debra
Auxiliary and its Charity Ball, an
annual fundraiser for St. Joseph's
Hospital, where Al was perennial board
chair. She served on a number of boards
supporting St. Joseph's. She was
heavily involved in the restoration and
ongoing support of the landmark Mt.
Baker Theater. In addition, she was
involved with UGN (now United Way), the
area council of Campfire Girls (where
she was also the proud mother of three
bluebirds). She served on and was
President of the Board of the Maalaea
Surf, the complex in Maui where she
spent almost 30 winters. Phyllis was
always extremely active, whether
hosting her garden club, golfing or
playing bridge or tennis with friends,
or modeling in charity fashion shows.
Just last year, she originated and
organized Dawg Days on Maui, a
successful gathering of UW alumni. She
rarely missed a Husky football game.
She loved Frank Sinatra, preparing
holiday meals, and a good laugh was
never far away. You couldn't help being
drawn in by her.
After her daughters were grown, Phyllis
studied and became an interior designer
for the family business, Levin's Home
Furnishings, sought after for her rare
ability to decorate and furnish homes
not in her style, but reflecting the
personality of each and every client.
She also selected and bought
accessories for the store and their
clients. But most of all, she was the
consummate mother. For Leslie, Jackie
and Lisa, and their families, she was
both mother and friend. She guided her
girls, supported them, infected them
with her own special brand of
irreverence, and was always there for
them, and for her four grandchildren.
With Al, and later with special friend,
Dick Lafferty, Phyllis spent hours on I-
5 to be with her grandkids. Phyllis in
a nutshell: rock solid, respectful,
caring and always with a little streak
of mischief.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Alfred M. Levin, her parents
Effie and Joe Bernbaum, her brother
Sanford M. Bernbaum, Sr. and her sister
Mimi Falk. She is survived by her
daughters Leslie Schafer and her
husband Ken, Jackie Kotkins and her
husband Skip, Lisa Cowen and her
husband Sheldon, her four grandchildren
Jeff Schafer, Katie & Joey Kotkins, and
Alex Cowen, and her very special friend
and loving companion Dick Lafferty.
