Evelyn Aplin Heaps
4/8/1946 - 12/13/2003

Evelyn Aplin Heaps passed away on
Saturday, December 13, 2003 at her home
in Bellingham after a short but
courageous battle with brain cancer.
She graduated from Wright State
University Summa Cum Laude with a
degree in accounting, completing her
CPA certification shortly after.
Evelyn was an adventurer in life having
sailed the Sea of Cortez, and across
the Pacific Ocean, crossing the
equator. She was a tremendous artist in
every sense, a ham radio operator, a
guitar and mandolin player, and a
licensed boat captain. From her
countless interests, adventures, and
accomplishments, there are many people
who met “Evie” along the way and became
her lifelong friends. Mom’s real pride
and joy were her 4 (soon to be 5)
grandchildren, Andrew, Jake, Cameron,
Kaelin, and Madison. Evelyn’s sole
focus in her later years was the time
spent with her “grandbabies” at
Boulevard Park and at the Children’s
Museum. She is survived by her son Mark
and wife Traci, daughter Valerie and
husband Scott, sister Hellen, brothers
Tim and Doug, mother Ruby, father
Howard and stepmother Jackie, numerous
nephews and nieces, and her 5
precious “grandbabies.” Her wonderful
and courageous friend Ken Gaston was
with Evelyn to the end, never giving up
hope, an amazing and rare human being.
To know “Evie” can be summed up in the
words of one of her favorite Jimmy
Buffett songs, “Lovely Cruise”:
.
“Drink it up, this one's for you
It's been a lovely cruise
I'm sorry it's ending, oh it's sad, but
it's true
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
These moments we're left with
May you always remember
These moments are shared by few
There's wind in our hair and there's
water in our shoes
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
Ohhh, these moments we're left with
May you always remember
These moments are shared by few
And those harbor lights, lord, they're
coming into view
We'll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one's for you
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
Yeah baby, it's been a lovely cruise
Oh darlin', it's been a lovely cruise”
Per her request, a Celebration
of “Evie’s” Life is pending . The
family requests that memorials be made
in Evelyn’s name to City of Hope at
www.cityofhope.com and/or the Brain
Tumor Center at Duke University at
www.cancer.duke.edu/btc.
