Howard Charles Deets
7/15/1909- 11/15/2003
Howard Charles Deets, long-time Whatcom County resident, businessman and farmer, passed away Saturday, November 15, following a brief illness at St. Francis Extended Health Care in Bellingham.
He was 94 years old.
Howard Deets was born on July 15, 1909, in the eastern Washington town of Odessa.
He was the third son of eight children born to Charles and Iona Deets.
The Deets family moved to Bellingham, when Howard was a teenager, and Howard graduated from Bellingham High School in 1927.
Howard continued his education at University of Washington, where in 1931, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy.
In the 1940's, Howard bought a drug store in Bellingham's Fountain District.
Fountain Drug, as a result of Howard's hard work and business acumen, became a Bellingham institution.
Howard was a member emeritus of the Washington State Pharmacists Association.
In 1975, Howard retired from his profession as pharmacist and retail businessman, and devoted his time and efforts to his avocation, farming and livestock.
He enjoyed horseback riding as a hobby, and in the late 1940's, he started breeding Arabian horses.
He acquired 13 acres of land in a rural area adjacent to Cornwall Park, on the northern outskirts of Bellingham, where he built a breeding and training facility.
In 1959, Howard began raising Polled Hereford beef cattle in addition to horses.
The cattle operation quickly outgrew the small farm adjacent to Cornwall Park, and Howard eventually acquired a dairy farm encompassing 145 acres on Slater Road west of Ferndale.
The cattle farm remains in operation today, and the pure-bred herd produces fifty to sixty breeding stock calves each year, most of which are marketed to commercial beef producers in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The small farm in Bellingham, also remains in operation, is home to a few horses and some cows, but today is surrounded by I-5, office and warehouse buildings, and a large hospital parking lot.
Howard belongs to numerous livestock, and other agricultural organizations; he was a past president of the Whatcom County Cattlemen's Association.
Howard's life-long interests, in addition to business and farming, included music, particularly symphonic and grand opera, and reading, especially poetry and historical fiction and non-fiction.
Howard has been a member of the United Methodist Church in Bellingham, since 1927.
He was a Mason and a member of Whatcom Lodge 151, of which he was a past master.
Howard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; a son and daughter-in-law, Allyn and Mary Deets, all residing in Bellingham; a granddaughter, Allison Deets, residing in Bow; a sister, Helen Iona Deets, in Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Lighthouse Mission (923 West Holly, Bellingham, 98225) or to the local farmland preservation organization, Whatcom Farm Friends (354-1337, Box 735, Lynden, 98264).
Funeral Services will be held Friday Nov. 21st, 2003 at 2 PM, at Westford Funeral Home in Bellingham.
This will be followed by a brief graveside service at Mt. View Cemetery, which is on the Deets family farm, located west of Ferndale, at 3068 Lampman Road, which Howard chose as his final resting-place.
An open house will be held, beginning at about 4 PM, at the family beach home, located on Sandy Point, at 4207 Sucia Drive.
