Milton P. Arndt, Jr.
RIVER FALLS - Milton P. Arndt, Jr., of Ladysmith, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Rusk County Hospital in Ladysmith.
He was born May 10, 1934, in Milwaukee, to Milton and Marion Arndt. He married Darlene Lorraine Johnson of River Falls on June 13, 1959.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; three sons: Thomas and Lina Arndt of Goodhue, Minn., Robert and Carmen Arndt of Burlington, Wash., and Tyson Arndt of LaMore, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two brothers: Richard of Hastings, Minn., and Kenneth of Ashland.
Mass of Christian Burial was March 5 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Ladysmith.
Doris Marie (Radunzel) Lee
Doris Marie (Radunzel) Lee, 84, died Thursday, June 18, 1998.
She was born Sept. 19, 1913, to Charles and Sena (Anderson) Radunzel of Woodville. Funeral services were Wednesday, June 24, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church. Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements. A complete obituary will appear next week.
Delite Helen Leona (Peterman) Baker, 80
PRESCOTT - Delite Helen Leona (Peterman) Baker, known to her friends as "Petie," age 80, died on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998.
She was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Foley, Minn., to Otto Wilhelm Petermann and Leona (Schwandt) Petermann. She had two brothers, William Frederick and Fredrick Otto Peterman.
She graduated from Foley High School in 1929 and received her degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota in March of 1933. She went on to become a Registered Nurse in August of 1993. She served her internship at General Hospital in Minneapolis and her residency at St. Croixdale in Prescott, where she was a nurse for seven years.
She married Leo William Baker at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Nov. 12, 1940, a marriage that lasted 45 years. They had six children: James, Joseph, Robert, Richard, Mary and William.
The newly married couple moved to Blythe, Calif., in 1940, so he could work at the Telephone Company and the U.S. Army's Desert Training center (DTC). She worked at Riverside Hospital in Blythe until the birth of their first child. From 1944 to 1945, they also had a gas station, Baker's Oil Company, where she helped out by pumping gas and washing cars. In 1945, they moved to Mayville, N.D., as he was offered a job in the Telephone Company there, and then in 1947 moved back to Prescott for the remainder of their lives. He purchased the St. Croix Boat Works in 1949 and she was the bookkeeper until 1956, when the Board Works was sold. He started his own business, Baker Construction Company in 1962, where she prepared the payroll and billing until he retired in 1974. She did seasonal work at Jacques Seed Company before becoming the Nurse/Receptionist at Dr. Howard Laney's office from 1960 to 1978. They rented a house on Young Street until December 1950, when they bought a house on the corner of Gibbs and Cherry Streets, where they lived until August 1964, when they moved into their new home on Linn Street, built by him and their sons.
She was a Cub Scout den leader for Troop 133 from 1953 to 1955. She was also involved with Girl Scouts as a leader for Troop 100 from 1955 to 1961. She was an active member of the PTA for many years. She was also a member of the TOPS and KOPS organization for over 20 years, during which time she held the various positions of leader, co-leader and secretary.
She enjoyed crafts throughout her life: candle making, cake decorating, knitting and beadwork, making sure that each new addition to her extended family received one of her beadwork bells complete with a name plaque. She gave many of her handmade candles to her large number of friends with whom she shared enduring friendships.
She was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ, Prescott, and a member of the Rebecca group.
She is survived by: her children, James and Joan of Prescott, Joseph Inez of San Diego, Calif., Robert and Kathleen of Prescott, Richard and Sheri of Sycamore, Ill., Mary and David Thoen of River Falls and William and Virginia of Prescott; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends.
Her husband and her parents and brothers preceded her in death.
Services were Saturday, Nov. 14, at Prescott United Church of Christ.

Thorild (Torri) H. Nelson, 43
Thorild (Torri) Harriet Nelson, age 43, of River Falls died at her home on Saturday evening, Nov. 14, 1998.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1955, in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Paul and Siv (Jungenstam) Wigsten. She was raised in Landsort Pilot Station, where she went to elementary school and then moved to Sodertalje in 1968 and received her advanced degree in nursing as a Registered Nurse. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Sweden. She was a lieutenant in the Swedish Army Hospital Corp. She served twice in the Gulf War as a nurse and spent six years in Rhodesia.
She moved to America and came to River Falls on Sept. 28, 1994.
She was married to James Nelson on Dec. 5, 1994, in Stillwater, Minn.
She is survived by: her husband, James of River Falls; her son, Joel Goransson of Stockholm Sweden; her parents, Paul Wigsten and Siv Pettersson, both of Sweden; her brothers, John (Britt-Marie) Wigsten and Nils (Christina) Wigsten, both of Stockholm; three sisters, Solvig (Bo) Liljegren, Ingrid Anderson and Asa Wigsten, all of Stockholm; stepsons, James (Jackie) Nelson II of Stillwater and Nathan Nelson of River Falls; two stepdaughters, Jennifer (Jeff) Ackerman of Burnsville, Minn., and Kristen (Gaylen) Paulson of Chicago; father and mother-in-law, George J. (Elsie) Nelson of River Falls; brother-in-law, Robert (Penny) Nelson of Ellsworth; three sisters-in-law, Jane (Jerry) Schmidt of Ellsworth, Ann Dusek of River Falls and Ruth (Dave) McWain of Cottage Grove, Minn.
Funeral services were to be Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls with Rev. Tinka Bloedow officiating. Organist was Carol Prince and soloist was Rev. Tinka Bloedow. Interment was in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Trenton Township.
Pallbearers were: Joel Goransson, James Nelson II, Nathan Nelson, Gaylen Paulson, Kristen Paulson, Jennifer Ackerman and Jeff Ackerman.

Donna M. Butts, 73
SPRING VALLEY - Donna Mae Butts, age 73, of Spring Valley died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center, where she had been a resident since 1975.
She was born Dec. 9, 1924, to Henry and Myrtle (Baardson) Sorenson in Gilman Township. She was baptized and confirmed at the Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, where she was currently a member. She attended Gilman Mines Grade School and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1943. After graduation, she worked in the office at Powers Department Store in Minneapolis until 1945.
On Nov. 24, 1945, she was married to Wayne Butts at the Gilman Lutheran Church. After their marriage, they moved to Anoka, Minn. They had three children: John, Thomas and Barbara.
Survivors include: her son, Thomas (Cozette) Butts of Minneapolis; daughter, Barbara Nelson of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; brothers, Wayne (Marge) Sorenson of White Bear Lake, Minn., Jim (Marlene) Sorenson of Bloomington, Minn., Rollin (Sue) Sorenson of Stillwater, Minn., David Sorenson of Ellsworth; sisters, Arlene (Ed) Nelson of Oakdale, Minn., Shirley Anderson of Hudson, Judy (Leonard) Vanasse of Milltown; three granddaughters, Kristin Nelson, Susan Nelson and Sarah Nelson; three aunts, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were: her brother, Harlan; her parents; husband and son, John.
Funeral services were Nov. 11 at Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Keith Holste officiated the service with music provided by organist Carole Lynum and vocalists Cindy Kongshaug and Diane Gavic. Burial was in the Gilman Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Bearers were: Ed Nelson, Rollin Sorenson, Leonard Vanasse, Wayne Sorenson, David Sorenson and Thomas Butts.

Nels G. Anderson, 92
Nels G. Anderson, age 92, resident of Fairview Seminary Home, Red Wing, died there Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998.
He was born May 7, 1906, in Vedum, Sweden, the son of Alfred and Beda (Johnson) Anderson. He attended school in Sweden. He came to Maiden Rock in 1924.
He married Grace Annen Oct. 29, 1929. The couple farmed in Salem Township for eight years, then Isabelle Township for 21 years. They moved to Red Wing in 1959. He worked at Farmers Store, Koehler News Agency, then worked as caretaker for Dr. Hawley's clinic and also at Red Wing Shoe offices.
He had been a member of Tabor Lutheran Church for many years, where he served as treasurer and was a member of the church council. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Red Wing, served as town clerk for Isabelle Township for 20 years and served as Oak Ridge School District clerk. He was also a member of Pierce County Civil Defense. He enjoyed fishing and coin collecting.
He is survived by: one son, Ronald (Marlene) Anderson of Maiden Rock; four grandchildren, Lynette (John) Roper of Red Wing, Lori Anderson of Bay City, Louila (Robert) Mann of Rapid City, S.D., and Tricia (Scott) Diercks of Ellsworth; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters in Sweden.
He was preceded by: his parents; his wife, Grace, who died Oct. 20, 1993; one granddaughter, Michelle; two brothers and six sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 16, at Tabor Lutheran Church with Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials preferred to the church cemetery.

Ann K. Voth, 84
HAGER CITY - Ann K. Voth, age 84, formerly of Red Wing, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at the Lutheran Home of Belle Plaine, Minn., where she had been a tenant since January 1987.
She was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Hager City to Henry and Minnie (Decker) Meyer and attended school in Pierce County.
She married Willis Voth Oct. 2, 1937, in Red Wing. She was a dental assistant for Dr. A.P. Wilson for many years and later worked at Red Wing Shoe Company for 20 years. Her husband died Aug. 29, 1981.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies guild, Red Wing Hospital Auxiliary and St. John's Hospital Auxiliary. She also belonged to the Lutheran Home Auxiliary in Belle Plaine.
She is survived by several relatives.
Memorial service was Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Loren Lucht officiating. A private burial was in the church cemetery before the service. Memorials are preferred to the church or the Lutheran Home, 611 W. Main St., Belle Plaine.
Vernon S. Krook, 84
ELMWOOD - Vernon S. Krook, age 84, of Elmwood died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Myrtle Werth Hospital-Mayo Health System, Menomonie.
He was born April 5, 1914, the son of Hjalmar and Clara (Arneson) Krook. He was born in Crookston, Minn., and raised in North Dakota.
He married Neva Smith Nov. 2, 1944, in Minneapolis. After marriage, they lived in Long Island, N.Y., where he served in the U.S. Coast Guard until the end of WWII. After the war, they moved to Hopkins, Minn., then to Elmwood. Later, they moved to St. Paul. During his working years, he was a paint and drywall contractor. In 1978, he retired and they moved to Elmwood, where he remained the rest of his life.
He is survived by: one son, Doug Krook of Hastings, Minn.; two daughters, Lonavern Tschida of Woodbury, Minn., and Jacque (Don) Cody of North Hudson; two sisters, Ida Rothchild of West Des Moines, Ia., Grace Marohn of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, Joshua and Jesse Krook, Chris and Paul Carlson, Tom and Joe Tschida and Kristin Jones; five great-grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Carolyn Maves of Menomonie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died July 9, 1993, and his parents.
Funeral services were Nov. 14 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Elmwood. Bill Crownhart officiated. Burial was in St. Henry's Cemetery, Eau Galle. Military Honors was provided by the Crain-Ottman American Legion, Post 207 of Elmwood.

Donald C. Pechacek, 77
Donald C. Pechacek, age 77, of Ellsworth died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at his home with his family around him.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1921, in Trimbelle Township, the son of Carl and Lenora (Teusaw) Pechacek.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, during WWII. He was assigned to the 28th Division Company G of the 109th Infantry. In 1944, he transferred to the second Ranger Battalion, Company F of Rudders Rangers. He was a participant in many major campaigns while in the Rangers, most notably the scaling of the cliffs of Pointe de Hoc, and the liberation of Grand Camp. He was awarded a Purple Heart for a wound he received during the taking of Castle Hill in the town of Birkenstein, at the edge of the Battle of the Bulge. He was recently awarded the Rangers Order of St. Maurice, which is awarded to individuals who have exemplified bravery, gallantry, a high standard of morals and integrity in serving their country. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945, and then returned to Ellsworth.
It was during his training in Wales that he met his future wife, Elizabeth "Peg" Kinsella, they were married July 17, 1947, in Niagra Falls, N.Y. She died July 18 of this year.
He farmed and worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for 25 years.
He will be remembered for his beautiful gardens and delicious sweet corn. He was a member of Kinne-Engelhart American Legion Post #204, Ellsworth, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
Survivors include: eight children, Colleen Baker of Minneapolis, Rita L. (Jack) Cudd of River Falls, Tracy Lee Pechacek of Maplewood, Minn., Donna A. (Randy Witthus) Pechacek of Hudson, Donald (Lisa Radkey) Pechacek, Jr. of River Falls, Maureen (Maynard Howe) Pechacek of San Diego, Calif., Timothy Pechacek of Ellsworth and Angela (Len) McMorrow of Robbinsdale, Minn.; grandchildren, Tessa, Tina, Brady, Jerod, Molly, Collin, Jacob, Logan, Kindra, Zachary, Connor, Quinn and Kara (Steve) Simmons; two great-grandchildren, Sierra and Anna Marie Simmons; two brothers and two sisters, Gerald P. (Marie) Pechacek of Ellsworth, Carl (Donna) Pechacek of Ellsworth, Dorothy (Marvin) Ottman of Ellsworth, Evelyn Bonte of New Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Peg.
Funeral services were to be Tuesday, Nov. 17, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Rev. Justin Kane was to officiate. Donald and Peg's cremated remains will be intered together at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Charlotte M. Karastes, 96
SPRING VALLEY - Charlotte Marcelia Karastes, age 96, of Woodville died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Park View Home, Woodville.
She was born Nov. 11, 1902, the daughter of Nels and Annie (Iverson) Olson in Cady Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley and presently a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville.
On Dec. 28, 1921, she married Joseph Karastes. They had one son, LaVerne "Bud." They farmed in Cady Township north of Spring Valley until 1969. They retired and moved to Woodville. She worked at Park View Home in the housekeeping department from 1969 until 1981. She continued to live in Woodville and was a resident of Park View for the past two years.
Survivors include: her son, LaVerne "Bud" Karastes and his wife Betty of Hayward; two sisters, Doris Timm of Woodville and Mildred Jacobson of Minneapolis; one brother, Leonard Olson of Spring Valley; three grandchildren, Don (Nancy) Karastes of New Richmond, Becky Karastes and friend Steve Kromrey of Clear Lake and Kay (Robert) Hovde of Baldwin; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Be

Ralph Thompson officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Elaine Jacobson and vocalist John Terkelsen. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Woodville.
Bearers were: her great-grandchildren, Kelley Eicher, Kate Eicher, Joel Karastes, David Karastes, Duane Hovde and Steven Hovde.
