Albert J. Fedie, 89
PLUM CITY - Albert J. Fedie, age 89, of Eau Galle died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at the Plum City Care Center, Plum City.
He was born Nov. 12, 1909, the son of Thomas and Mary (Traun) Fedie. He was born and raised in the Town of Maxville, Buffalo County, rural Durand.
He married Ida Bauer Baier Nov. 15, 1932, in Eau Galle. After marriage, they lived and farmed in Eau Galle. He later worked for the Durand Canning Company. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the Eau Galle Sportsman's Club and an avid fisherman. His wife died Jan. 28, 1987. He married Anna Pelke April 1, 1989.
He is survived by: his wife, Anna; two daughters, JoAnn (John) Fagerland of Ellsworth and Virginia (Kenneth) Schober of Menomonie; one son, Jerry (Carol) Baier of Eau Galle; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister, Catherine Buhlman of Eau Galle.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Ida; his parents; one infant son, Charles; one brother, Thomas Fedie, Jr.; two sisters, Isabel Wittig and Margaret Weishapple.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Eau Galle. Revs. Roy Mish, Matthew J. Molinaro and Ambrose Blenker will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Durand. Friends were to call from 4-8 p.m Tuesday at the Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
Casket bearers will be grandsons: Michael Baier, David Baier, Robert Baier, Ted Baier, Steven Schober, Bradley Fagerland and Mark Fagerland.

Frank Wilk, Jr., 71
SPRING VALLEY - Frank Wilk, Jr., age 71, of Spring Valley died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at his daughter's home in Eagan, Minn., after a long illness.
He was born July 30, 1927, near Glenwood City, the son of Frank and Celia (Colburn) Wilk, Sr. He grew up on the family farm south of Spring Valley near Olivet.
On April 1, 1947, he married Colleen Traynor at Hastings, Minn. They were later divorced. He owned a milk route for a short time near Spring Valley and also farmed a couple of years before moving to St. Paul in 1955. He lived in St. Paul for about 30 years. He drove for Greyhound for a while and also worked at the Arsenal in Arden Hills, Minn. He then worked for Dahlen Transportation Company at Newport, Minn., as a truck driver for 25 years. After retiring, he moved back to Spring Valley and has lived there since 1982.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, snowmobiling and camping. He was a member of the Teamster Local 120 at St. Paul and had been a Union Steward.
Survivors include: five daughters and one son, Judy (Jeff) Rygwall of Andover, Minn., Mark Wilk of Woodbury, Minn., Jan (Tom) Chial of Eagan, Kim (Randy) Zauner of Stillwater, Minn., Lori (Lee) Becker of Grant, Minn., and Lana (Bill) Nietz of Maplewood, Minn.; special friend and companion, Laura Cain of Spring Valley; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Howard (Darlene ("Sis") Wilk of Menomonie and Jerry (Bonnie) Wilk of Hudson; one sister, Betty (Neal) Hunter of Menomonie; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley. Fr. Varkey Velickakathu officiated the service, assisted by Sister Karen Freund. Music was provided by organist Ellen Rominski and the Sacred Heart Choir. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Laurel Marcks, 66
HAGER CITY - Laurel Roberta Marcks, 66, Pepin, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at her home.
The daughter of Stanley and Ruby (Hawkins) Engel, she was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Pepin. She graduated in 1950 from Pepin High School, worked for a bank in St. Paul and later was a secretary for E.J. Longyear Co.
She married Ronald Marcks Feb. 25, 1952, in Winona, Minn., and they lived in Pepin. A lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Pepin, she enjoyed crafts and painting.
Surviving are: her husband; one daughter, Rhonda (Mark) Diers of Eau Claire; one son, Ross (Erin) of Hager City; three grandchildren; one brother, James (Nancy) Engel of Pepin; and one sister, Rosa Larson of Rochester, Minn.
Funeral was to be Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Pepin, with the Revs. Frederik Schultz and Frank Kuhlman officiating. Spring burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin. Friends were to call for one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
Goodrich Funeral Home, Durand, is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin B. Johnson, 87
PRESCOTT - Edwin Berkley Johnson, age 87, of Prescott died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at the Lutheran Home in River Falls.
He was born July 13, 1911, in Pierce County, the son of Frank and Mary (Proctor) Johnson. He was a graduate of Prescott High School and attended a mechanical trade school in Fargo, N.D. He farmed in Clifton Township.
He is survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Meredith and Hollis.
Services were to be Tuesday, March 2, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Prescott with Rev. David Roberts officiating. Interment was to be in Pine Glen Cemetery.

Ollie L. Melstrom, 86
Ollie L. Melstrom, age 86, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at River Falls Area Hospital.
She was born July 15, 1912, in Trimbelle Township, the daughter of Tracy and Nettie (Brown) Whipple. She attended the Utah country school in Trimbelle Township. She married Edward Melstrom May 17, 1930, in Red Wing.
Her life revolved around her family. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and taking care of her family.
She is survived by: her husband, Edward of Ellsworth; seven sons, Royce (Lois) Melstrom, Perry (Dorene) Melstrom, Dale (Marianne) Melstrom, Duane Melstrom, Charlie (Liz) Melstrom, all of Ellsworth, and Donald (Beverly) Melstrom of Durand and Gary (Mavis) Melstrom of Prescott; one sister, Beatrice (Everett) Nelson of St. Paul; 32 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by: one daughter, Betty Rosenow; one son, Glen Melstrom; two grandsons, Peter and Tom; and one great-granddaughter, Kelly.
Services were held on Friday, Feb. 26, at Bethel Covenant Church, Hager City. Pastor David McDowell officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Clara T. Smith, 97
ELMWOOD - Clara T. Smith, age 97, of Elmwood died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
She was born Nov. 11, 1901, in the Township of Eau Galle, rural Elmwood. She was the daughter of Michael and Bertha (Samuel) Kerg. She was raised in the Elmwood area.
She married Ira J. Smith Nov. 10, 1925, in Wabasha, Minn. After marriage, they lived in the Weston area of Dunn County before moving to Elmwood. She later worked as a clerk at Lampson's store in Elmwood for several years. He died in 1984 and, since 1996, she has been a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood.
She is survived by: three daughters, Kathleen I. (Erwin) Herbison of Maiden Rock, Mary Jean Gilles of St. Paul and Virginia R. (Wayne) Spence of Redding, Calif.; two sons, Willard L. (Regina) Smith of Sun City West, Ariz., and Ira J. (Linda) Smith of Woodbury, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Kinnett of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two daughters, Jacqueline J. Smith and Arlene F. Hill; a grandson, David Spence; three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood with Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.

Esther L. Norderhaug, 86
Esther L. Norderhaug, age 86, of Ellsworth died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the Fairview Seminary Home, Red Wing.
She was born Oct. 11, 1912, in Martell Township, the daughter of Lars and Bertha (Erickson) Peterson. She married Halmen Norderhaug and they dedicated over 55 years to each other.
She loved flowers, taking rides in the country with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren. She was an active lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hope Circle and worked at the fair stand.
She is survived by: her husband, Halmen of Ellsworth; two sons, Donald (Katheryn) Norderhaug of Madison, Michael (Linda) Norderhaug of Brookfield; three grandchildren, Andy Norderhaug of Madison, Kirsten and Bjorn Norderhaug of Brookfield.
She was preceded in death by: two sisters and two brothers, Mauda Falteisek, Petra Hageborn, Carl E. Peterson and Oswald Peterson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Beldenville. Rev. John Sutherland and Intern Pastor Karna Buseman Stark will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday and for one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

A. Louella Erickson, 87, of River Falls, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the Kinnic Long Term Care, where she had been residing since April 6, 1998.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, March 7, at the Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home in River Falls.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 7, at the First Covenant Church, River Falls, with Rev. Neil R. Bonkoski, pastor, officiating. Interment will bei n the Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls.
The Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home, River Falls, assisted the family with arrangements.
Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, is handling arrangements.

A. Louella Erickson, 87
PLUM CITY - A. Louella Erickson, 87, of River Falls died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the Kinnic Long Term Care, where she had been residing since April 6, 1998.
She was born on July 14, 1911, in Burns, Wyo., the daughter of Ivan and Jennie Peterson. She attended grade school in Cloverland and graduated from Central High School in Superior, and one year at Covenant Bible College. She also attended UW-River Falls. She received her Wisconsin teacher's certificate and librarian certificate. She taught six years in the public school of Stockholm.
She was married to Kenneth Erickson on June 19, 1940, in Plum City. She was a farmer's wife after her marriage and later they purchased a general store in Lund. In 1947, they moved to River Falls, where she did substitute teaching at Greenwood School, private tutor for a disabled child and was the "Story Lady" and librarian for several years at the River Falls Library.
They spent several years as owners and managers with Ed and Lillian Brune of the Kinnic Restaurant (now the Westwind).
Her real joy was her strong faith in God, her church work at First Covenant Church, her family and her rosemaling, which was a source of income to her in the 1980s.
She was an active member of the First Covenant Church of River Falls and the Covenant Women. She was a past church organist, choir member, Sunday School superintendent, librarian, Hi-League director (the church youth group), Bible School director, prayer chain leader and floral arranger for the church. She was a writer and poet, having had some of her poems published. She received awards for her rosemaling. She enjoyed knitting and making afghans. She was a devoted wife, having taken care of her husband, who had diabetes and was blind and an amputee for 12 years.
She loved her children and grandchildren, and prayed for them often. She enjoyed having some of them close to her so she could teach them to read, but most of all to tell them about Jesus. She never missed an opportunity to share her faith and her hospitality.
In later years, as the forgetfulness began to cloud her mind, she still was quick with a smile and a kind word, even though she had no idea who people were, she loved them anyway.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 1974; a son, Gene Erickson in 1996; daughter-in-law, Karla Erickson in 1994; four brothers, Cliff, Reuben, Roy and Ed; and two sisters, Lillian Erickson and Irma Sopota.
She is survived by: her daughter, Thelma Johnson of Burnsville, Minn.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Cindi Erickson of Apple Valley, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Marlyce Erickson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Imogene Erickson of Minneapolis, Lorraine (Carl) Hasselquist of Center City, Minn., and Millicent Erickson of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, Dan (Caryn) Erickson, Heather Erickson, Mindi (Tony) Eklund, Matt Johnson, Melissa Johnson, Jessica Erickson and Justin Erickson; five step-grandchildren, Justin Schedtler, Erin Schedtler, Stephanie (Brad) Hendrikson, Christa Morris and Wade Morris; six great-grandchildren, Wesley Erickson, Leah Erickson, Trisha Eklund, Matt Eklund, Andy Eklund and Peter Eklund.
Visitation was Sunday, March 7, at the Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home in River Falls. Funeral services were Sunday, March 7, at the First Covenant Church, River Falls, with Rev. Neil R. Bonkoski officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls.

Darrel W. Weber, 80
ELMWOOD - Darrel W. Weber, age 80, of Elmwood died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the Myrtle Werth hospital, Mayo Health Systems, Menomonie.
He was the son of Herman and Nina (Yourell) Weber. He was born Nov. 18, 1918, and raised in the Eau Galle area of Dunn County.
He married Margaret Radle Nov. 16, 1938, in Arkansaw. After marriage, they lived and farmed in the Elmwood and Eau Galle area. In 1995, they moved into the Village of Elmwood, where he remained the rest of his life.
He is survived by: his wife, Margaret; four sons, Douglas (Donna) of Menomonie, Daniel (Linda) of Maiden Rock, Richard of Menomonie and Dennis (Cathy) of Wilson; four daughters, Darlene Worley of Elmwood, Delores (Donald) Wilson of Roberts, Mary (Wallace) Bignell of Stockholm and Dorothy (John) Hanvelt of Grantsburg; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Herman Jr. of Blaine, Minn., Robert of Elmwood and Joseph of Orlando Fla.; and one sister, Dorothy Zeilinger of Menomonie.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister, Mabel Weber; a brother-in-law, Edward Zeilinger; one grandson, Bruce Wilson; and one great-grandson, Quintin Bignell.
Funeral services were Monday, March 8, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elmwood. Rev. Varkey Velickakthu officiated. Burial will be in St. Henry's Cemetery, Eau Galle, in the spring.
Arrangements were by the Rhiel Funeral Home, Elmwood.

Charlotte G. Buckner, 80
Charlotte G. Buckner, age 80, died at her home in River Falls on Friday, March 5, 1999.
She was born Feb. 7, 1919, the daughter of George and Anna (Mickelson) Graham.
She was a homemaker all her life, enjoying painting, knitting, crafts, fishing, travel and spending time at the cabin in Barnes. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in River Falls.
She is survived by: her husband of 61 years, Carl; five daughters, Kay (Rodney) Kinneman of Hager City, Betty (Jerry) Gutting of Ellsworth, Carmen (Dave) Evenson of Hager City, Nancy Buckner of Hudson, and Brenda (Ken) Bauer of Mondovi; one sister, Virginia (Edgar) Ide of Red Wing; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in River Falls.
Cashman's Mortuary of River Falls is in charge of arrangements.
