Sidney G. Kimball, 84
BAY CITY - Sidney Groestsch Kimball, age 84, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Bay City and Red Wing, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Charm, Minn., to Sidney and Mabel (Groetsch) Kimball and graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1932.
He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II from 1942-45, serving in the South Pacific. He married Jeanne M. Anderson in 1946 and they have lived in Mesa for the past 20 years. He worked at Jorgenson's Chevrolet, Beeman's Hardware and as a maintenance person with Northern States Power Company until retiring.
Survivors include: his wife; three children, Karen (David) Rovang of Forest Lake, Minn., Val Jean (Ron) Crimmins of Mesa, and Gary (Mary) Peterson of Mexico City; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Orpha Paulsen and Arlene Kimball, both of Red Wing; and a brother, Aaron (Shirley) of Red Wing.
Memorial services were Saturday, March 20, at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Halvorson officiating.
Wilbur N. Oberg, 74
HAGER CITY - Wilbur N. Oberg, age 74, of Minneapolis, formerly of Red Wing, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at Fairview Riverside Hospice Comfort Care, Minneapolis.
He was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Hager City, the son of Herbert and Clara (Mann) Oberg. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1942.
He married Lenora Schauer Nov. 15, 1944, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Miesville, Minn. They made their home in Red Wing and he owned W.N. Construction. He resided at University Good Samaritan Home, Minneapolis, for the past 10 years.
He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, Red Wing, and Red Wing Elks BPOE 845.
He is survived by: two daughters, Carol (Harvey) Gerlach of Hastings, Minn., and Linda (Glen) Lundell of Cannon Falls, Minn,; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Lowell (Penny) Oberg of Hager City.
His wife and one brother, Russell, preceded him in death.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, March 20, at the Church of St. Joseph, Red Wing, with Father Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Miesville. Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer Research.
Pallbearers were: Dan Breuer, Tommy Gerlach, Brent Lundell, Russell Duane Oberg, Gene Oberg and Herb Oberg.

Agnes E. Rhiel, 81
ELMWOOD - Agnes E. Rhiel, age 81, of Milwaukee died Friday, March 29, 1999, at her home in Milwaukee.
She was the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Riley) Crownhart. She was born and raised in Elmwood. She was a veteran of WWII. She served as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, receiving the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
She married Vernon John Rhiel Nov. 11, 1946, in Elmwood and they moved to Milwaukee in 1952. She worked as an RN for over 30 years at St. Michael's Hospital in Milwaukee. She was a member of St. Robert's Catholic Church in Shorewood.
She attended the '57 World Series and was an avid Brewers fan and gardener. She was dearly loved by her family and all who knew her.
She is survived by: two daughters, Rebecca (Dan) Groppi of Cudahy and Anne Marie Rhiel of Milwaukee; five sons, John (Terese) of Shorewood, James, George and Roger (Laura), all of Milwaukee, Robert (Amy) of Cedarburg; six grandchildren, Lisa (John) Meyer, Sadie and Kurt Nass, Ashley, Kevin and Ben Rhiel; great-grandmother of Shawn, Brianne and Baby Meyer (on the way); two brothers, Frank (Adeline) Crownhart of Elmwood and Robert of Hereford, Ariz.; two sisters, Catherine (Florian "Boots") Plon of Madison and Marian Rhiel of Durand; step-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, George (Myrtle) Rhiel of Tucson, Ariz., and Floyd J. (Margaret) Rhiel of Durand; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by, besides her husband: Vernon, who died Sept. 30, 1974; her parents; one brother, Phillip; one sister, Dorothy Disse; three brothers-in-law, Ralph Rhiel, Chuck Disse and Robert Rhiel.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, at St. John's Catholic Church in Plum City. Rev. Ambrose Blenker will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Katherine M. Harris, 50
Katherine "Kathy" M. Harris, age 50, of Ellsworth died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 24, 1948, in Plum City, the daughter of LeRoy and Helen (Eggenberger) Burgess. She married Neal Harris Dec. 30, 1978. She retired from the Red Wing Shoe Company in 1996 after 17 years of service.
She loved her family, flowers, birds and crafts. She was loved by all and was a source of strength through her adversity.
She is survived by: her husband, Neal of Ellsworth; five children, Michelle (Eric) Hove of Goodhue, Minn., Marilyn (Paul) Lucas of Red Wing, Mariah Harris of St. Paul, Aaron Harris and Bryce Harris, both of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Chanel and Robert of Goodhue, Elyse, Krista, Laticia Hove, all of Goodhue, Shashona and Ryan Lucas of Red Wing; father, LeRoy (Audrey) Burgess of Ellsworth; two sisters, Diane (Steve) Bartlett of Bay City and Donna Tutor of Hastings, Minn.; and one brother, Kevin (Connie) Burgess of Ellsworth.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen.
Services were held Tuesday, March 23, at English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with Revs. Harlen Menk, Lauryl Stockness and Intern Pastor Julie Wohlman officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Elm Cemetery.

Juanita M. McMahon, 77
ST. PAUL PARK, Minn. - Juanita M. McMahon, age 77, formerly of St. Paul Park, Minn., died accidentally on Sunday, March 14, 1999.
Survivors include: her husband, Clark; sons, Robert (Linda) McMahon of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Randall (Nancy) McMahon of Burnsville, Minn.; four grandchildren, Steven, Nicole, Carrie and Kristi; two step-grandchildren, Gretchen and Justin; four great-grandchildren; a sister; and four brothers.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 17, at Community United Church of Christ, 1127 Summit Ave., St. Paul Park. Interment was in Newport Cemetery. Memorials to Community United Church of Christ.

LaVerne Johnson, 68
PRESCOTT - LaVerne "Bud" Johnson, age 68, of Prescott died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at his home.
He was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Red Wing, the son of Frank and Emma (Timmerberg) Johnson. He served in the U.S. Army in 1949.
He married Delores Blue Dec. 2, 1950, in Red Wing. He worked for Armour Meat Company in South St. Paul, Minn., for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by: his wife, Delores, of Prescott; one son, Larry (Patti) Johnson of Prescott; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice (Willie) Bennett, Lenexa, Kan., and Doris (Orville) Nelson, Prescott; and one sister-in-law, Jule Johnson, Welch, Minn.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one daughter, Kathy Rosenbloom; one son, Craig Johnson; and one brother, Floyd Johnson.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Prescott, with Rev. Lauryl Stockness officiating. Burial of cremains will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth, at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at noon until the time of the service.

John Lowrie, 93
PLUM CITY - John "Jack" Lowrie, age 93, Lake City, Minn., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Lake City Nursing Home.
He was born May 21, 1905, in Lake City to Thomas and Emma (Cummings) Lowrie and grew up in Lake City. He married Flora Petrich Dec. 4, 1935, in Plum City. They lived in Lake City, where they owned and operated Terrace Night Club from 1947-57. In 1957, they moved to Florida, where he was a realtor. In 1973, he retired and they returned to Lake City. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Lake City, and Red Wing Elks Club.
Survivors include: his wife; one son, Dale (Jerene) of Las Vegas; one daughter, Lois (Ted) Kruempel of Lake City; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral was Friday, March 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Lake City, with the Rev. Daniel Weise officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Lake City.

LeRoy K. Johnson, 76
LeRoy Kenneth Johnson, age 76, of Ellsworth died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Trenton Township, the son of Emil and Minnie (Lind) Johnson. He married Verneal Ekstrom Nov. 28, 1942, in Red Wing. They were married 56 years.
He worked in the shipyard in Savage, Minn., during WW II until 1946, when he went to work for the Pierce County Highway Department. He retired from Pierce County in 1984. While hobby farming in Trenton Township, he enjoyed gardening and tinkering with his John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed being called grandpa by all the neighbor kids. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
He is survived by: his wife of Ellsworth; 11 children, DeLoris "Dodee" (Lorin) Bloomstrand of Ellsworth, Dennis (Kathy) Johnson of San Jose, Calif., Ronny (Pam) Johnson, Linnea "Tudy" (Robert) Soden, Janice (Bill Kearns) Alms, Jerome (Loni) Johnson, Karol (Nolan) Kenall, Brenda (Jim) Dougherty, Marlyce "Myo" (Mark) Bayer, Lisa (Dennis) Boettcher and Linda Johnson, all of Ellsworth; 22 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon (Verona) Johnson of Hager City, Roydie (Dorothy) Johnson of Ellsworth; one sister-in-law, Stella Johnson of Ellsworth. Further survived by nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Melvin.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 1, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Carol Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Carl F. Buckner, 88
Carl F. Buckner, age 88, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999.
He was born in Diamond Bluff Township Aug. 26, 1910, the youngest son of Fred and Minnie (Kinneman) Buckner. He lived his entire life in Pierce County.
He farmed and held various jobs, retiring from 3M after 20 years.
On June 6, 1938, he married Charlotte Graham, who preceded him in death earlier this month.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in River Falls. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was an avid trout fisherman. He loved a good game of euchre. He and his wife of 61 years enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Barnes and traveling.
He is survived by: five daughters, Kay (Rodney) Kinneman of Hager City, Betty (Jerry) Gutting of Ellsworth, Carmen (Dave) Evenson of Hager City, Nancy Buckner of Hudson, Brenda (Ken) Bauer of Mondovi; one sister, Freda Howe; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held March 27 at United Methodist Church in River Falls.

James W. Traun, 63
PLUM CITY - James W. Traun, age 63, of Plum City died Monday, March 22, 1999, at his home in rural Plum City.
He was born March 17, 1936, the son of Wilfred and Mary (Hengst) Traun in Eau Claire. He grew up in the Durand and Arkansaw area. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He married Marjorie Komro June 1, 1959, at Lima. After marriage, they lived and farmed in the Town of Eau Galle, Dunn County, rural Plum City.
He is survived by: his wife, Marjorie; two sons, Rick (Debbie) of Plum City and John (Becky) of Elmwood; four daughters, Debra Traun of Hudson, Patty (Todd) Bignell of Arkansaw, Sharon (Darren) VandeBerge of Elmwood, Julie Traun of Plum City; nine grandchildren; his mother, Mary Traun of Durand; two sisters, Joyce Cranham of La Habra, Calif., Jeraldine O'Keefe of Anaheim, Calif; one brother, Jerel of Coon Rapids, Minn.
He was preceded in death by: his father, Wilfred; one brother, Steven; and an infant sister, Patricia.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 25, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Arkansaw. Rev. Matthew J. Molinaro officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Emily F. Post, 84
SPRING VALLEY - Emily F. Post, age 84, of Spring Valley, formerly of Hammond, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Myrtle Werth Medical Center in Menomonie.
She was born June 23, 1914, to Otto and Minnie (Rahn) Pieper in Dakota County, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ at Lone Oak Lutheran Church, Eagan, Minn. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in New Richmond for many years.
On Oct. 23, 1937, she married George Walter Post, Jr. They farmed in Dakota County prior to moving to Wisconsin in 1944, where they purchased their own farm near Hammond. She remained on the farm until 1992 when, due to health reason, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Harvey and Audrey Thomas, near Knapp. In 1995, health necessitated that she move to the Spring Valley Health Care Center, where she lived until her death.
Survivors include: four children, Wiley (Judy) Post of Hammond, Audrey Thomas of Knapp, Sharolyn Post of Knapp and George (Nona) Post III of Wilson. She is also survived by: 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Adele (Art) Groth of Hastings, Minn.; one brother, Herb (Hilda) Pieper of West St. Paul, Minn.; also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her husband, George in 1983; a brother, Walter Pieper; a sister, Tillie Groth; and a son-in-law, Harvey Thomas.
Funeral services were Friday, March 26, at the Community Bible Church in Spring Valley. Pastor Dan Mook officiated the service with music provided by Cara Mook and Laurie Church. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery, Baldwin. Bearers were her grandsons: Troy Thomas, David Thomas, Daniel Thomas and Wiley Post, Jr., and nephews, Duane Groth and Roland "Bud" Groth.
