Violet E. Jahnke, 86
Violet E. Jahnke, age 86, of Ellsworth died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center, where she had been a resident the past three years.
She was born Feb. 13, 1913, in Wahpeton, N.D., the daughter of Carl and Kathryn (Hothussen) Erdman. She married Louis R. Jahnke June 12, 1940, in Lund. She was a long time member of Zion Covenant Church, Ellsworth. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She especially enjoyed gardening and loved growing flowers around her home.
She is survived by: three sons and two daughters, Robert (Ann) Jahnke of Ellsworth, Lowell (Jeanne) Jahnke of Ellsworth, Paul (Cora) Jahnke of Atlanta, Ruthann Smith of St. Paul, and MaryEllen (Randy) Berg of Ellsworth; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, three brothers and three sisters.
Services were Tuesday, June 8, at at Zion Covenant Church, Ellsworth. Rev. David Eaton officiated. Interment was in the Lund Covenant Cemetery.

Gerald C. 'Louie' Brunkhorst, 77
SPRING VALLEY - Gerald Charles "Louie" Brunkhorst, age 77, of Spring Valley died Friday, June 4, 1999, at River Falls Area Hospital, River Falls. He had been taken by ambulance to the hospital a few days earlier.
He was born Oct. 24, 1921, the son of Irvin and Clara (Thomforde) Brunkhorst at Belvedere, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was a long-time member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. He grew up and attended school in Minnesota. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. After service, he returned home and helped farm the family farm in Minnesota for a while. He then moved to the Spring Valley area.
On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Joan Hampton at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. They lived near Spring Valley, then lived at Kent, Wash., for about three years. They returned to Spring Valley in 1958.
He was involved with farming, cattle buying, auction services and road construction. He drove horses for many local parades and loved the horse pull competitions.
Survivors include: five children, Marsha Brunkhorst of Spring Valley, Jack (Barb) Brunkhorst of Dallas, Kathy (Duane) Miller, Denise (Ken) Witucki and Jerry Brunkhorst, all of Spring Valley; 10 grandchildren, Dean Brunkhorst, Dennis (Karen) Brunkhorst, Bryan (Andrea) Lee, Brent Brunkhorst, Kristy Brunkhorst, Heidi, Robby, Tracy and Charles Miller and Tammy Brunkhorst; and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by: one brother, Neil (Phyllis) Brunkhorst of Prescott; three sisters, Kathryn Chambers of Ellsworth, Lorraine (Vic) Zillmer, Yuma, Ariz., and Carol (Byron) Lambert of Naches, Wash.; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Monday, June 7, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Martin Wegner officiated the service with music provided by organist Kathy Brown with congregational singing. Burial was in the St. Michael's Cemetery, Spring Valley. Bearers were: Dan Brunkhorst, Dave Brunkhorst, Marvin Chambers, Jamie Smith, Waughnel Plahn and Wayne Plahn.

Marguerite 'Mugs' Most, 75
Marguerite "Mugs" Most, age 75, of Ellsworth died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Lake City, Minn., the daughter of George and Lillian Kassera. She attended Maiden Rock School and grew up with her grandparents, Hedwig and Robert Kassera. She moved to Ellsworth around the age of 16 to work on the Frank and Loretta Campbell farm. She has resided at the beautiful place ever since she married Stanley Q. Most in 1948 in Ellsworth.
She owned and operated Most's Bar from 1949 until 1988. She was well-known for loving the outdoors, catering, participating in events at the Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club, parading with her convertible and being a loving mother, grandmother and companion. She will be deeply missed by her children.
Survivors include: long-time companion, Howard Iverson of East Ellsworth; eight children, Vicki (Niels) Jensen of Minneapolis, Kristie (Jim) McHardy of Rosedale, Miss., Karla (Bob) Rasmussen of Colfax, Tony (Pam Ogden) Most of East Ellsworth, Tammie (Michael Glidden) Most of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jerry (Mary) Most of Maple Grove, Minn., Gale (Jan) Most of Ellsworth, Jackie (Jack) French of Prescott; grandchildren, Nicole, Megan, Kirsten, Erik, Tiffany, Jeremy, Michael, Tanner, Laura, Justin, Pam, Kim, Sheila, Craig, Mickey, Suzanne, Jasmun, Robin, Kelly, Jamie, Jim and Dave. Also two brothers, Loren (Doris) Kassera of Eau Claire and Dean (Evelyn) Kassera of New Hope, Minn.; also two aunts, Millie Kassera of Pepin and Margaret Kassera of Spring Valley.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband in 1967; and one brother, Donald.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 4, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Ellsworth, with Rev. Keith Trembath officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Shirley L. Leonard, 86
Shirley L. Leonard, age 86, of Red Wing, formerly of St. Paul and Ellsworth, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at her home.
She was born May 30, 1913, in Diamond Bluff, the daughter of Everett and Nora (Brown) Baker. She married Lorrain Leonard in 1931. She owned and operated a boarding house in St. Paul for 23 years.
She was an avid garage sale shopper, traveler, baker and cook. She loved her family.
She is survived by: two daughters, Marlys (Orven) Amacker of Red Wing and Judy Monette of Maplewood, Minn.; one son, Gerald Leonard of St. Paul; one daughter-in-law, Lynette Leonard of Maplewood; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; one son, Duane "Duke" Leonard; a granddaughter, Jody; a son-in-law, John Monette; and brother, Everal "Stub" Baker.
Services were Saturday, June 5, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.
Dale K. Stein, 45
HAGER CITY - Dale Keith Stein, age 45, Hager City, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at his home.
He was born Sept. 3, 1953, in Plum City to Harold and Frances (Weberg) Stein. Shortly after graduating from Pepin High School in 1971, he started working at Red Wing Shoe Company, where he was working at the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by: his mother of Pepin; six brothers, Raymond (Janice) of Alma, Marshall (Nancy) of Ellsworth, Richard (Marie) of Hastings, Minn., James of Walker, Minn., Cameron (Victoria) of Red Wing and Robert (Holly) of Plum City; four sisters, Marie (Ralph) Rundquist of Eau Claire, Barbara (Lyle) Redlich of Osceola, Jeanette (Allan) Aubert of Eau Claire and Ardis (Don) Marquis of Merrill.
Preceding him in death were his father in 1993 and one brother, Duane, in 1967.
Memorial service was Saturday June 5, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wordelman officiating. Chris Falteisek was organist and Teresa King was soloist. Burial was in Stockholm Moravian cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jackie Klinger, Brian, Lori, Anita and Angela Stein, and Jennifer Staerk. Honorary pallbearers were Eliza and Jessica Stein.

Mildred L. Esanbock, 74
SPRING VALLEY - Mildred Lillian Esanbock, age 74, of Spring Valley died Friday, June 11, 1999, at her home in Gilman Township after a long battle with cancer.
She was born April 26, 1925, in El Paso Township, the daughter of Millard and Mary (Stefon) Powers. She attended Spring Valley High School, graduating with the Class of 1944. She lived in Spring Valley and surrounding area all her life.
On June 5, 1947, she married Bennie Esanbock at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley. They had two children: Sharon and Jeff. She was an active member of the Spring Valley Congregational Church and the church ladies. Her faith in our Lord guided her life and hand as she lovingly raised and cared for her family. Her greatest joys were gardening, camping, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include: her husband, Ben of Spring Valley; children, Charon (Jim) French and Jeff (Ruth) Esanbock, all of Spring Valley; six grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Linaberry, Joshua (Sarah) French, Emily French and her fiancee Howard Johnson, and Chad, Casey and Linsy Esanbock. She is also survived by: her sister Margaret Taylor; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; half brothers, Henry Hines and Edward Hines; and half sister, Frances (Powers) Roatch.
Funeral services were Monday, June 14, at the Congregational Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Joan Tyvoll officiated the service, with music provided by organist Barb Alseth and vocalists Dorla Holm and Steve Tyvoll. Burial was in Spring Lake Cemetery, Spring Valley. Bearers were: Chad Esanbock, Josh French, Mike Olson, Nolan Esanbock, Peter Esanbock, Bill Olson and Leroy Esanbock.

SPRING VALLEY - Thelma Gunderson, age 84, of Spring Valley died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Spring Valley Health Care Center in Spring Valley.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, with Rev. Keith Holste officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. George 'Goldie' L. Campbell, 83
George "Goldie" L. Campbell, 83, Ellsworth, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
He was born Sept. 3, 1915, in Pierce County to George and Mary (Riley) Campbell. He attended the Drake School and graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School in 1931. From 1931 to 1933, he attended River Falls College and received a two-year degree in elementary education. He later earned a degree in history and social science with a minor in geography in 1951, and also earned a master's degree in education administration in 1959.
From 1942-45, he served in the U.S. Army with the 110th Infantry, 28th Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Loretta "Jessie" Deiss on Sept., 15, 1943, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth.
He served the public education system for many years, starting his career as an educator. He taught at the Drake School from 1933-1940 and at Ellsworth Elementary School from 1945-1946. He was principal of Deer Park Elementary School from 1941-1946, Burnside Elementary School in Red Wing from 1948-1960, and Ellsworth Senior High School from 1960-1968. He then became Ellsworth elementary schools supervising principal, retiring in 1981.
He and his wife spent winters for the last 14 years in Mesa, Ariz. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and oratory. He belonged to St. Francis Catholic Church, Kinne-Engelhart American Legion Post 204 and Knights of Columbus in Ellsworth, and was past exalted ruler of the Elks Club in Red Wing.
Survivors include: his wife, Jessie; two daughters, Linda (Glen) Fink of Hudson and Marilyn Campbell of River Falls; one son, Tim (Karolyn) Campbell of Ellsworth; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard, and one sister, Evelyn Huppert.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was to be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and for one hour before the service Wednesday at the church.

Allan L. Kline, 83
Allan L. Kline, age 83, of St. Anthony, Minn., passed away Sunday, June 6, 1999.
He was born in Ellsworth Township and lived in this area for several years.
He served in the Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Kaniewski-Loss VFW #1852 and Westphal American Legion Post #251. He was a former volunteer with st. Anthony Fire Department. He shall be forever missed but never forgotten by those who loved him dearly.
Survivors include is wife of 56 years, Helen; daughters, Cheryl (Bob) Horeck and Jill (Roy) Anderson. Also survived by grandchildren, Amy, Ryan, Brandon, Damon, Tory; and step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Eric) and Janet; loving sisters, Merle Sagedal, Frances Hofker; brother, Donald (Millie) Kline; sister-in-law, Marcia Kline; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Wednesday, June 9 from Kozlak-Radulovich Funeral Chapel, 1918 University Ave. NE, at 9:40 a.m. Funeral services at St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral at 10 a.m. Interment at St. Mary's Orthodox Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Mary's Cathedral.

Leland I. Murphy, 79
Leland I. Murphy, age 79, of Rice Lake, formerly of Pierce County, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the Rice Lake Convalescent Home.
He was born June 15, 1919, in Ellsworth Township, the son of Ignatius and Nelle Murphy. He attended Clayfield School and lived on a farm in that community until 1937, when he moved to a farm in the Lost Creek area, where he lived until 1960. At that time, he moved to Ellsworth and worked for the Pierce County Highway Department for the next 30 years, retiring in 1981. In 1984, he moved to New Richmond and later to Rice Lake to be closer to his family.
He is survived by: his sister, Lorraine (Walter) Steiner of Rice Lake; nieces and nephews.
Services were Thursday, June 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth with Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Interment will be Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery, Clayfield.

Ronald F. Stewart, 83
Ronald F. Stewart, age 83, of Hudson died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at the Christian Community Home of Hudson.
He was born in River Falls on Jan. 19, 1916, the son of Charles F. and Martha (Hanson) Stewart. He was a police officer in Prescott and was in the Merchant Marines.
He is survived by his sister, Lorraine Thomas of Ellsworth; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m., on Thursday, June 17, at Cashman Mortuary. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the mortuary. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Ben J. Heath of Portland, Maine, died on Friday, June 4, 1999.
He is survived by: daughter Missy Rowan (Mike); son Kenneth Heath; and grandson Jason Rowan, all of Hastings, Minn.; parents, Marlene and Jim Heath; two brothers, Larry and David; two sisters, Ramona and Dianna; also special friend Betty Heffron.

Elisa 'Eli' B. Mickelson, 17
Elisa "Eli" B. Mickelson, age 17, of Ellsworth died Monday, June 14, 1999, as the result of an auto accident in rural Ellsworth.
The daughter of Rose Mickelson, she was born May 26, 1982, in Red Wing. She would have been a senior this coming fall at Ellsworth Senior High School. She was very active in the high school band, playing the trumpet. She also enjoyed playing the piano. She dabbled with accordion, guitar, drums and any other musical instrument she could get her hands on. She played the lead in the senior high school production of the "Matchmaker." She had a unique and special personality, she loved being with people and her special friends (you know who you are). She was honored to play Taps for military funeral and enjoyed entertaining at the Kinnic Long Term Care in River Falls, where her Grandpa Sid was a resident. She made a couple of appearances at the Ellsworth Senior High School Pop Concerts as Miss Saigon and Olga of Sweden. She was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
She is survived by: her mother, Rose of Ellsworth; maternal grandparents, Marcella and George Hebaus of Cottage Grove, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Dee and Walter Ulberg, Boyceville; two aunts and one uncle, Nancy and Roger Waltz of Hudson, and Marilyn Mickelson of River Falls; cousins, Dan, Brady, Mike and Jinny Waltz.
She was preceded in death by: her Grandpa Sid; uncle, Sid; and aunt, Beverly.
