Thelma J. Gunderson, 84
SPRING VALLEY - Thelma Jeanette Gunderson, age 84, of Spring Valley died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center after a battle with cancer.
She was born June 12, 1915, in Gilman Township, the daughter of the late Adolph and Katherine (Wahl) Swenson. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1934.
After high school, she worked on the family farm and at Thompson's Cafe in Spring Valley. On June 9, 1938, she was married to Oscar Gunderson and they farmed in Gilman Township.
She was an active member of Gilman Lutheran Church and the church ladies group, having served on various committees and offices. She began playing the piano at age five. She played by ear and, at age nine, her father bought her a piano. Giving to others was a big part of her life and she enjoyed playing the piano and keyboard, entertaining residents of many area health care and assisted living centers. She entertained with Carl Strom for 11 years. Besides music, she loved to garden, cook and bake. She also enjoyed being with and having her family around her.
Survivors include: three sons, Tom of Spring Valley, Bruce (Glenna) of Waupaca and Gail (Karen) of Spring Valley; four grandchildren, Kara Gunderson of Spring Valley, Christine (Mark) Kienbaum of Plover, Ginger (Steven) LaCosse of Appleton and Craig of Waupaca; three great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Hanna Kienbaum and Luke LaCosse. She is also survived by: two sisters, Alice Madson of Spring Valley Health Care Center and Sylva (Allen) Anderson of Spring Valley; nieces and nephews, Beverly Gaard of Ellsworth, Donna Carter of Arizona, Audrey (Duane) Erickson of Severn, Md., Gary (Mary) Madson of Virginia, Nola (Dale) Gehn of Hudson, Katherine (Robert) Beeson of Peoria, Ariz., Dean (Sandy) Madson of Spring Valley, Jon (Linda) Anderson of Spring Valley, Steven (Bobbie) Anderson of River Falls, Betty (Vince) Driscoll of Bloomington, Minn., Gloria (Jack) Weghorn of Spring Valley and John (Barb) Kirk of Barron; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 16, at Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Keith Holste officiated the service with music provided by organist Linda Anderson and pianist B. Craig Gunderson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Honorary bearers were: Carl Strom, Irvin Larson, Ervin Gilbertson, Robert Cebulla, Ben Esanbock, Bob Esanbock and Millard Anderson. Bearers were: John Kirk, Jack Weghorn, Dan Mulcrone, Jon Anderson, Gary Madson, Dean Madson and Dale Gehn.

Margaret J. Thom, 87
Margaret J. Thom, age 87, of Ellsworth died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at her home.
The daughter of Olaf and Julia (Johnson) Stensrudd, she was born March 13, 1912, in Red Wing.
She attended Ottman Corner School and worked on the family farm until she married Carl Thom Dec. 2, 1936, in Red Wing at the Presbyterian Church. He died in 1972.
They had two children, Betty, who died in 1949, and Marvin, who died in 1997.
She enjoyed visiting and receiving company at her home.
She is survived by: cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Ellsworth with Rev. Lauryl Stockness officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Friends were to call at the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Waleigh Pfingsten, 59
ROCK ELM TOWNSHIP - Waleigh B. Pfingsten, age 59, Red Wing, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, near Frederic.
He was born May 19, 1940, in Rock Elm Township to Lester and Jessie (Babcock) Pfingsten and attended school in Red Wing.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-65. He married Bonnie Van Guilder Sept. 10, 1966, and they lived in Red Wing. He worked for Northern States Power Company for 20 years and then did over-the-road trucking for a number of years. A member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post, he enjoyed fishing and outdoor activities.
He is survived by: his wife; two sons, Scott (Jackie) of Savage, Minn., and Wayne (Sarah) of Farmington, Minn.; one daughter, Lisa Pfingsten of Red Wing; four grandchildren; three sisters, Delores (Lloyd) Bundy of Seattle, Virginia (Marv) Born and Dorothy (Marty) Quam, both of Red Wing; one brother, Bill Cederberg of Red Wing; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Sylvester and Lyle; and one sister, Darlene.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with the Rev. Marian Eisenmann officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation was to be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a Legion prayer service at 7 p.m., and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Vera E. Bjurquist, 84
MAIDEN ROCK - Vera Evangeline Bjurquist, age 84, of Stockholm died Tuesday night, June 15, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital, where she had been admitted earlier that day.
She was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Arkansaw, the daughter of Pearl W. and Susan (George) Hill. She graduated from Arkansaw High School and Eau Claire Normal School. Later, she received her B.S. degree with a major in Education from UW-Eau Claire.
She was married to Milton Edgar Bjurquist on Sept. 28, 1940, in Waukon, Ia. He preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1991. She taught at numerous rural schools and finished her teaching career at the Pepin Elementary School, retiring in 1980 after 39 years in education.
She was a member of Sabylund Lutheran Church and the ALCW. She enjoyed attending Bible study, cooking and reading.
She is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sharon Bjurquist of Stockholm; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Harry Kirk of Durand; sister-in-law, Luetta Hill of Chippewa Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and 16 brothers and sisters.
Services were held Friday, June 18, at Sabylund Lutheran Church in Lund with Rev. Lynne Rigg, pastor, officiating. Luella Dettling was organist and Howard Larson was soloist. Interment was in the Sabylund Lutheran Church. Pallbearers will be: her great nephews, Mark Miller, Michael Miller, Terry Webb, Bobby Webb, Jody Webb and Jeremy Webb.

Anna L. Wilkens, 78
Anna L. Wilkens, age 78, of Ellsworth died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at the home of her daughter Pam in Stockholm Township, where she has resided for the past year.
She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Wabasha, Minn., the daughter of John and Fern (Rolph) Owen. She married William Wilkens May 20, 1939. He died April 23, 1997.
Survivors include: five sons and five daughters, Barb (John) Losgaard of Beldenville, Vicki (Berlyn) Howe of Ellsworth, Roger Wilkens of St. Paul, Karon Prescott of Columbia Falls, Mont., Harry (Devra) and Lorin Wilkens of Ellsworth, Allen (Vicky) Wilkens of Hager City, Cheryl Roen of Flagstaff, Ariz., Pam Wilkens of Stockholm and Dean (Rachel) Wilkens of Ellsworth; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lola Hayes and Ila Fick, both of Ellsworth, and Bettie Williams, St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, two sons and six brothers and sisters.
Services were Saturday, June 19, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with Rev. David Eaton officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.

G. Arthur Lamon, 84
ELMWOOD - G. Arthur Lamon, age 84, of Elmwood died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at his home in Rock Elm Township, rural Elmwood.
He was born July 8, 1914, the son of Otis and Lila (Barrett) Lamon. He was raised and lived his entire life on the home farm. He graduated from Elmwood High School in 1932. He attended an agricultural short course at UW-Madison. He went on to attend River Falls Normal for two years. He returned to the home farm and married Esther Nelson on April 19, 1942, in the Spring Lake Lutheran Church. After marriage, they lived and farmed on the home farm, where he has remained the rest of his life.
He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Baldwin Masonic Lodge F & AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of Eau Claire, Zor Shrine of Madison and O.E.S. #33 of Glenwood City. He loved dancing and took up water skiing in his 60s until he was 75.
He is survived by: his wife, Esther; three daughters, Roxanne (Jim) Davis of Galesville, Glenda (Ralph) Arnold of Cary, Ill., and Dana (Steve) Orr of Leawood, Kan.; a son, George (Nancy) of Elmwood; 11 granddaughters; three great-grandsons; two sisters, Lois Farmer of Pipestone, Minn., and Lorraine Webb of Menomonie.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, Galen and triplet brothers, shortly after birth.
Funeral services were Monday, June 21, at the United Methodist Church in Elmwood with Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery, Rock Elm, rural Elmwood.

Donald E. Cook, 76
Donald E. Cook, age 76, of Ells-worth died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Ellsworth, the son of Arthur and Martha (Kalepp) Cook. He lived in the Ellsworth area most of his life.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and worked as an electrician. He also worked for his parents in their greenhouse. He was a member of English Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: eight children, Gene Cook of Minneapolis, Delwin Cook of Elk River, Minn., Dean (Carol) Cook of Cottage Grove, Minn., Terri (Gary) Meyers of Newport, Minn., Gale (Sue) Cook of Faribault, Minn., Mary Cook of Eagan, Minn., Dona (Jeff) Olufson of Ellsworth and Lana (Bill) Nelson of Hager City; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob (Marilee) Cook of Peoria, Ill.; three sisters, Verdell Klecker of Blaine, Minn., Connie Strand of St. Paul and Dorothy (Jerry) Larson of River Falls.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; loving wife; and one grandson, Adam Kunkel.
Services were Sunday, June 20, at English Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with Rev. Lauryl Stockness officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.

John P. Smith, 29
John P. Smith, age 29, of Seattle died suddenly on Saturday, May 29, 1999, in Seattle, where he resided for the past nine years, working as a commercial fisherman.
Born Nov. 14, 1969, he was the youngest child of the late George and Mary Smith. He grew up in Pierce County, attending school in Ellsworth and Prescott. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He was known for his quick wit, kindness and giving nature.
He is survived by: seven brothers, George of Red Wing, Pete of Phoenix, Jim, Fred (Penny) and Joe of Ellsworth, Andy (Diane) of Veneta, Ore., and Leo (Karen) of St. Paul; four sisters, Ann of Minneapolis, Mary (Rick) Jones of Gaylord, Mich., Alice (Dan) Winger and Sarah (Mike) Ryan of St. Paul, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service, which will be held at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, at 3 p.m., on Thursday, June 24. Rev. Thomas Donaldson and Rev. Josephine Dolan will officiate. Interment will follow at the Diamond Bluff Cemetery.

Stella E. J. Huber, 97
Stella E.J. Huber, age 97, of Ellsworth died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Nov. 6, 1901, in Pierce County, the daughter of Charlie and Matilda (Strand) Schmidt. She married Clarence Huber March 22, 1920, in Ellsworth. They farmed in Ellsworth and Hartland Township. He died Aug. 22, 1972.
She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth. She taught Sunday School and was a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and cooking.
She is survived by: three sons, Arley (Eleanor) Huber of Red Wing, Donald (Trudy) Huber of Red Wing and David (Phyllis) Huber of St. Paul; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Caroline Huber of Ellsworth and Myrna Hendrickson of Hayward.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; two sons, Vincent and Leland; one infant daughter; and three grandchildren.
Services were Friday, June 18, at First Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Paul Martin officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.

Harvey E. Hanson, 90
SPRING VALLEY - Harvey Eugene Hanson, age 90, of Spring Valley died on Friday, June 18, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center.
He was born in Spring Lake Township on Oct. 12, 1908, the son of Peter and Ellen (Jorgenson) Hanson.
He attended elementary school in Spring Lake and his eighth grade year in Glenwood City, living with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Jorgenson. He returned to Spring Valley and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1926. He especially liked athletics and played in the Dunn County Baseball League for Connorsville. "Lefty" continued playing baseball for many years. In addition to playing for Connorsville, he finished his baseball playing days by pitching for Duffy's Darlings, which his brother-in-law Harry Duffy managed.
On Oct. 4, 1934, he married Lois Moore. At that time, he served as an apprentice to Ben Anderson, who owned the bakery in Spring Valley. The couple then purchased the bakery from Anderson and together they owned and operated Hanson's Bakery for 50 years. They sold their business in 1980.
They had two daughters; Nancy (Vern) Ellefson of Ellsworth and Muriel (John) Jeffrey of Bonita Springs, Fla.
He was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, where he was active in many activities. He especially enjoyed singing in the choir. He enjoyed music and played the piano, organ and violin. He enjoyed fishing and baseball and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
He is survived by: his daughters and son-in-law, Nancy and Vern Ellefson, Muriel and John Jeffrey; three grandchildren, Nicci Gonzalez of Jupiter, Fla., Lisa Ellefson of Grantsburg and Michael Ellefson of Ellsworth; two great grandchildren, Rachel Smith of Grantsburg and Benjamin Whipple of Ellsworth; one sister, Grace Hansen of Spring Valley; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his wife Lois in 1997; his parents; two brothers, Vinton Hanson and Otto Hanson; and three sisters, Irene Duffy, Fern Dupere and Edith Lamon.
Visitation was to be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Keith Holste will officiate the service with music provided by organist Linda Anderson and vocalist Dorla Holm. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Honorary bearers will be: Jack Weghorn, George Gauvin, Otto Thompson, Allen Anderson and Ole Hendrickson. Bearers will be: Michael Ellefson, Benjamin Whipple, Winston Hansen, David Johnson, Randy Ellefson and Tom Ellefson.
