Barbara A. Anway, 63
BAY CITY - Barbara A. Anway, age 63, of Bay City died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
She was born Dec. 14, 1935, in Winona, Minn. the daughter of Earl and Lois (Van Bronkhorst) Larson. She attended Red Wing schools.
She married Ronald Anway Aug. 28, 1954, in Red Wing. She worked at Red Wing Health Center, Larry's Broiler and St. James Hotel. She did baby-sitting for a number of years. They lived in Jonestown, Tex., from 1979-1983 and then moved to Wisconsin. They returned to Texas and lived there from 1984-1986 and then returned to Wisconsin. He died April 21, 1989. She collected salt and pepper shakers and magnets and enjoyed camping and traveling.
She is survived by: three sons, Mark (Bethanne) Anway of Red Wing, Mike (Julie) Anway and David Anway, both of Bay City; two daughters, Cyndee (Tommy) Cantrell of Bay City and Lori (Ronald) Walther of Red Wing; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Lois Storey of Boise, Ida.
She was preceded in death by her father and her husband.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 24, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Rev. Kristine Holmgren officiating. Burial was in the Bay City Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to American Cancer Society. Pallbearers were: Chad, Garrett, Mandy, Nathan, Robin and Stacy Anway, Dan and Joe Hoffman. Honorary bearers were: Alyssa, Dustin and Tia Anway and Ryan Walther.

Edward R. Pechacek, 82
RIVER FALLS - Edward R. Pechacek, age 82, of River Falls died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at the River Falls Lutheran Home.
He was born Jan. 21, 1917, in River Falls Township, the son of Joseph J. and Anna Marie (Falteisek) Pechacek.
He married Loretta Brookshaw March 30, 1937, in El Paso. He farmed many years in River Falls Township and then worked for Equity Co-op Elevator until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and most especially his family. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
He is survived by: his wife of River Falls; two daughters, Shirley (Bill) Deiss, St. Croix Falls, and Ruth (Donald) Capatske, Beldenville; seven grandchildren, Dan (Kathy) Deiss, Luck, Al (Rose Mary) Deiss, Centuria, Sue (Tony) Kent, Elk Mound, Dianne (Fred) Eder, Vienna, Austria, Linda (Scott) Donnelly, Hager City, and Dave and Jason Capatske, Beldenville; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one sister, Victoria Peterson, River Falls; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and seven brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Father Edwin Knauff officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Francis W. Harrison, 74
ELMWOOD - Francis W. Harrison, age 74, of Elmwood died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at his home in rural Elmwood.
He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in New York, N.Y., and grew up there. He was the son of Charles H. and Loretta (Geraghty) Harrison O'Connor. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He married Gladys Sholes in 1944 in Hutchinson, Kan.
He was a graduate of New York University, Graduate School of Public Administration and Social Service, also attended Institute of Applied Science, fingerprint identification, Chicago, Police Sciences and Psychology, Child Psychology, Criminal Law I and II at University of New York at Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y.
He served in the Suffolk County, N.Y., Police Department for 27 years from 1952 to 1979. He qualified in court as a fingerprint expert in 1954. He retired as Lieutenant, Commanding Officer Supply and Procurement Bureau. After retirement, they moved to Rock Elm Township, rural Elmwood, where he has remained the rest of his life.
He was past secretary of Suffolk County Police Superior Officers Association, and founder and first chairman of U.S. Section, Long Island Region 15 of the International Police Association. He was now a member of Region 4 of Chicago. He was past president of Lake Grove Lions Club in Lake Grove, N.Y. He was a life member of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police (20 years). He was a member of Suffolk County Emerald Society, cofounder of their Bag Pipe band in 1970; member of the American Legion Post 207 of Elmwood, member of the Knights of Columbus in Elmwood and a Fourth Degree Knight. He served as chairman of the Pierce County Republican Party for the term of 1989-1991. He was a representative of the Salvation Army for the Elmwood and Spring Valley areas.
He is survived by: his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Carol Ann Graf of Jamesberg, N.J., and Marilyn Jean Finneran of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; four granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Hechler of Annapolis, Md.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister, Elizebeth Bischoff, and two brothers, Charles Harrison III and Richard A. Harrison.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elmwood, with Rev. Varkey Velickakthu officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery-Rock Elm, rural Elmwood.

Carl A. Peterson, 89
ELMWOOD - Carl A. Peterson, age 89, of Elmwood died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home.
He was born May 2, 1910, the son of Peter and Johanna (Nielson) Peterson on the family farm in Spring Lake Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and a lifelong member of Spring Lake Lutheran Church, Spring Valley.
On July 30, 1931, he married Mabel Grape at Red Wing. They farmed the Peterson farm until retirement. The farm was in the family for three generations and was a 100-Year Farm. After retiring, he did woodworking. They also loved to travel and visited many different countries, visiting relatives and making friends along the way. He could tackle any project. He even built his own saw mill to cut the wood used to make furniture and other items. He was an all-around mechanic and could fix just about anything.
He was an active member of Spring Lake Lutheran Church, having served on the Church Council and also Treasurer. He served on the District 28 School Board and the P. C. A. Board in Pierce County.
Besides his loving wife of 68 years, he is survived by: a son, Gary Peterson and his wife Roxann of Elmwood; a daughter, Joyce (Frederick) Souba of Shawano; one sister-in-law, Nethis Peterson of Stillwater, Minn.; seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; one son, Richard; three brothers, Christian, Nels and Martin Peterson; four sisters, Rena Steinbring, Rosena Bertelson, Carolina Jensen and Clara Lundgaard; and a granddaughter.
Honorary bearers were: Harold Peterson, LaVerne Bertelson, Wayne Bertelson, Leonard Schlosser and Garland Alton. Bearers were: Wendell Lundgaard, Duane Peterson, Carl Jensen, Harold Jensen, Robert Britton, Robert Jensen and Tom Langer.
Visitation was held Friday at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. Funeral services were Saturday, July 24, at Spring Lake Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Keith Holste officiated the service with music by organist Mary Jane Hecker and vocalist Dorla Holm. Burial was in the Spring Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Harry 'Bill' Johnson, 82
HUDSON - Harry William Johnson, age 82, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Spokane, Wash.
He was born Dec. 22, 1916, at Hudson.
He married Berdeena (Miller) Johnson.
Memorial services were held at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 1, with Rev. Al Reasoner officiating. Inurnment was in Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Gerald Bud Laue, 74
Gerald Bud Laue, age 74, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at his home in Balsam Lake.
He was born in River Falls on June 2, 1925, to Dr. Robert and Rose Laue. After graduation from River Falls High School, he joined the United States Navy and served for four years. Following his honorable discharge, he attended River Falls State Teacher's College for one year before enrolling in the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in Philadelphia. He graduated from there in June of 1951 with a Doctor of Optometry degree.
On July 28, 1951, he was married to Audrey Hygnstrom of Maiden Rock at the Congregational Church in River Falls. He set up his practice of optometry in Ellsworth and practiced there for 25 years. They had two daughters, Shelley (Mrs. Gary Hines) of Balsam Lake and Jean Laue of Dallas, Tex.
After retiring from his optometric practice, they moved to Balsam Lake. He served as a bus driver for the Unity School District for a time, was a member of the American Legion Post 278 and a member of the United Methodist Church of Balsam Lake.
He is survived by: his wife, Audrey; daughters, Shelley (Gary) Hines and Jean Lane; two grandsons; one brother, Dr. Richard (Sally) Laue of St. Louis Park, Minn.; two sisters, Barbara (John) Branigan of River Falls and Marilyn (Dean) Boles of Bloomington, Minn.; one half-sister, Sybil Filkins of River Falls; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
Memorial services were to be held at the United Methodist Church in Balsam Lake on Tuesday, July 27, with Rev. Tim Albrecht officiating.

Marion T. Hopkins, 74
ONO - Marion Tue Hopkins, age 74, of Cameron, formerly of New Richmond, Geneseo, Ill., and Ono died Friday, July 23, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Moline, Ill., to John and Marion Stevenson. She graduated from Geneseo High School, Geneseo, and the University of Illinios (B.S.). She was a junior high and high school teacher of Political Science, Economics and Forensics at Stillwater, Minn., and Glenwood City. She was also a real estate appraiser.
She married Eugene Hopkins in Rock Island, Ill., on Sept.. 20, 1947. She was a member of the Chetek United Methodist Church, P.E.O. (Chapter Z) of Rice Lake, Chi Omega Sorority and The Friday Bridge Club of Chetek.
She is survived by: her husband, Eugene; son, Peter; and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her daughter, Martha Hopkins Deibert; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, at the Chetek United Methodist Church, 300 Stout St., Chetek, with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire. Memorial donations may be made to P.E.O. Scholarship Fund, c/o Roxie Olsen, 912 Lakeshore Dr., Rice Lake 54868.

Rose S. Penny, 89
Rose S. Penny, age 89, of Ellsworth died Friday, July 30, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born June 3, 1910, in River Falls Township, the daughter of John M. and Stella R. (Kaczor) Fox. She attended school in Beldenville, worked most of her life at various jobs. She married Olaf Peterson and they later divorced. She also married Leo Penny and they later divorced.
She lived in River Falls until moving to Hudson in 1957 and then later moved to Ellsworth in 1987. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
She is survived by: six sons and one daughter, John (Kathy) Peterson of Red Wing, James (Leona) Peterson of Eagle Grove, Ia., Jerome (Lola) Peterson of Fond du Lac, Wayne (Rita) Peterson of Ellsworth, Edward (Kathy) Peterson of Beldenville, Mike (Marcia) Penny of River Falls and Rosemary (Todd) Christiansen of Ellsworth; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Buck of Beldenville.
She was preceded in death by: her husbands; one daughter, Irene; three sisters; and one brother.

Nordahl M. Steen, 88
EL PASO - Nordahl Marcellus Steen, age 88, of Oak Hill, W.Va., died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Born Jan. 9, 1911, in El Paso, he was the son of the late Ole O. Steen and Nettie Iverson Steen. He was baptized and confirmed at South Rush River Lutheran Church, El Paso, graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School ant attended the University of Minnesota. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He was formerly co-owner of Steen-Miller, Inc. Automobile Agency, a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Shirley Donnelley Bible Class, former chairman of the Board of Trustees, president and chairman of the board of One Valley Bank, a member of the Oak Hill Rotary Club, past president and Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and a member and former president of the White Oak Country Club.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty McCardle Steen; two daughters, Lisa McCardle (Johannes) Mateboer of Orlando, Fla., and Sandra McCardle (William) Croak of Matthews, N.C.; sister-in-law, Stella Steen of Hawaii; nieces and nephew.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; first wife, Helen; brothers, Irvin and Olaf Steen; sisters, Anna (Melvin) Massing, Grace (Wilbur) Nielson, Astrid (George) Russell.
Services were Tuesday, June 29, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial followed at Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Velma S. Brinkman, 83
RIVER FALLS - Velma S. Brinkman, age 83, of Red Wing died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Hi-Park Care Center.
She was born Aug. 11, 1915, in River Falls to William and Emma Segerstrom, and graduated from high school and teachers college, both in River Falls. She taught in Schofield and Ladysmith.
She married Clayton Brinkman June 28, 1941, in River Falls. She was a substitute teacher in Fort Wayne, Ind. They moved to Red Wing in 1952, and she taught for 18 years at Red Wing schools.
A member of First United Methodist Church, she was an active member of the League of Women Voters.
She is survived by: her husband; one son, William (Judith) of Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Saturday, July 31, at Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls, with the Rev. Carol Noren officiating.
Arrangements were by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, of Red Wing.
