Ethel N. Zimmer, 83
SPRING VALLEY - Ethel Nancy Zimmer, age 83, of Spring Valley died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at her home.
She was born Nov. 13, 1915, the daughter of Ole and Inga (Boe) Oare in Cady Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed at Wilson Lutheran Church and has been a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley since 1941. She grew up in Cady and attended the Cady Creek School.
On April 28, 1941, she married Alois Zimmer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In January 1942, they moved to Milwaukee. They returned to Spring Valley and purchased Pete Blegen's grocery store in Spring Valley. They owned and operated Zimmer's Red and White Grocery Store for 21 years, until selling the store in 1967. Besides working at the store, she worked as activity director at the Spring Valley Health Care Center for a few years, and worked at the Sunshine House Daycare in Spring Valley before retiring at age 79.
She was a member of the Spring Valley American Legion Auxiliary Unit 227 at Spring Valley. She was an active member of Sacred Heart and a member of the Altar Society.
Survivors include: five daughters, Judith (Ronald) Aebly, Mary Louise (Jeffrey) Schwab, Sally Zimmer, Susan (Clifford) Baker all of Milwaukee, and Diane (Jeffrey) Brooke of Spring Valley. She is also survived by: 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon (Betty) Oare of Wayzata, Minn.; four sisters, Pearl Reed of Colfax, Margaret (Olaf) Hendrickson of Spring Valley, Frances Gunderson of Wilson, and Gladys Halderson of Montrose, Minn.; several brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, Al, who died in October last year; one sister, Ana Koehler; and four brothers, Arthur, Clifford, Otto and Carl Oare.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Varkey Velickakathu and Brett Swearingen officiating. Music was provided by organist Ellen Rominski and the church choir. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Spring Valley. Her granddaughters served as honorary bearers and her grandsons were casket bearers.

Esther E. Voelker, 92
SPRING VALLEY - Esther Emma Voelker, age 92, of Wilson died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, Elmwood. She had been at the nursing home for the past six days after suffering a stroke a couple weeks earlier.
She was born July 5, 1907, the daughter of Richard and Ann (Kado) Gesche on the family farm in Cady Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed and a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley.
She attended the Cady Lucas and Plainview Country Schools. On Dec. 20, 1930, she married Robert Voelker at Stillwater, Minn. They had three sons: Bernard, Wayne and Stanley.
She lived her entire life on the home farm. In addition to raising her family and working on the farm, she worked as a cook at the Wilson House in Menomonie for a couple years. She also worked at Connell's Orchard and worked a number of years at the Cady Cheese Factory.
She was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and loved cooking and gardening, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She perfected her cooking skills and her meals at home were always wonderful.
Survivors include: her three sons, Bernard (Eleanor) of Prescott, Wayne (Corrine) of Carver, Minn., and Stanley (Carol) of Wilson; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frieda Gesche of Elmwood; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, Robert who died in 1974; her brother, Elmer Gesche; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Voelker.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 31, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Martin Wegner officiated the service with music provided by organist Kathy Brown and congregational singing. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery, Spring Valley. Bearers were her grandsons: Richard, Dean, Thomas, Mitchell, Kent, Michael and Brian.

Louise C. Kind, 92
HAGER CITY - Louise C. Kind, age 92, of Hager City died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Nov. 16, 1906, in El Paso Township, the daughter of Bernhart and Bertha (Lehmann) Fischer. She taught school for six years in Pierce County (Wilson School, Salem Four Union and Conroy Schools).
She married Albert Kind May 29, 1930. They farmed in Trenton Township. She wrote for the Pierce County Herald and the Ellsworth Record. She also worked for Hoard's Dairyman. She had always been active in education, especially her children's. She also assisted with remedial reading at the Red Wing Training School. She was president of the Ellsworth PTA. She was a council member of the extension homemakers and Red Cross Blood Bank. She was a member of Svea Lutheran Church in Hager City.
She is survived by: six children, Robert (Lois) Kind, Silver Bay, Minn., Janice (Marlin) Torseth, Hager City, Peter (Sandi) Kind, Lorton, Va., Donald (Maureen) Kind, Madison, William (Connie) Kind, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Joel (Patricia) Kind, Pulaski; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers, Erna Fischer, St. Paul, Martha Wille, West Bend, Florence Wirth, Ellsworth, Rev. Walter Fischer, Arlington, Minn., and Arthur Fischer, Ellsworth.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; a granddaughter, Mallory Goral; one sister, Bertha Firner; and one brother, Reinhart Fischer.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Svea Lutheran Church, Hager City, with Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Kenneth E. Fellman, 86
RED WING - Kenneth Edward Fellman, age 86, of Red Wing and formerly of Burnside, Minn., died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
He was born Dec. 13, 1912, in Hay Creek Township, Minn., the son of Christ and Emma (Hesbeck) Fellman. He attended rural schools. He worked as a farm hand and then as a cement finisher in the construction industry. He had a large garden in Burnside and sold produce to stores and individuals for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Red Men Club. He enjoyed flowers and gardening.
He is survived by: three brothers, Leonard (Alma) of Big Lake, Minn., Marvin (Judy) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Harlan of Red Wing; two sisters, Dorothie Hauschildt and Gladys Siewert, both of Red Wing; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant sister, Irene Fellman.
Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 6, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Noren officiating. Burial was in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Memorials preferred to the church or donor's choice. Pallbearers were: Curt Hauschildt, Rod Hauschildt, Richard Siewert, Dwight Fellman, Mark Fellman, Blair Fellman.

Wilmer 'Bill' H. Peterson, 90
Wilmer "Bill" H. Peterson, age 90, of Ellsworth died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
He was born in Trenton Township, Jan. 5, 1909, the son of Gustav and Delia (Anderson) Peterson. He married Bertha Hilden Nov. 9, 1935, at the Bethel Covenant parsonage. They farmed in Trenton Township and he worked for the Pierce County Highway Department concurrently for 38 years, retiring in 1975.
He enjoyed gardening and woodworking projects. He was a member of Bethel Covenant Church.
He is survived by: his wife, Bertha of Ellsworth; three sons, Richard (Donna) Peterson of Roseville, Minn., Leland (Kristin) Peterson, Glendale, Ariz., and Melvin Peterson of Spring Valley; two daughters, Carolyn (Larry) Schmidt of Mankato, Minn., and Brenda (Carl) Jurisch of Deer Park; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin (Margaret) Peterson of Ellsworth and George (Hildur) Peterson of Hager City; one sister, Lillian Nelson of Ellsworth; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mayme Snow.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Bethel Covenant Church in Hager City with Revs. David McDowell and Marvin Eppard officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials suggested to the Bethel Covenant Church Building Fund.

Dr. Douglas Van Damme, 51
BALDWIN - Dr. Douglas Van Damme, age 51, of Baldwin and a partner in the Baldwin Veterinary Clinic, died Friday, July 30, 1999, as a result of a scuba diving accident in Lake Superior.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1947, in Marshall, Minn., the son of Albert and Ardell (Stensrud) Van Damme. He attended grade school and graduated from high school in Lynd, Minn. Following high school, he attended the University of Minnesota and received his baccalaureate in Pharmacy in 1970. He continued his schooling and received his Doctrine in Veterinary Medicine in 1974.
He moved to Baldwin in 1974, where he began his employment at the Baldwin Veterinary Clinic. Shortly after, he went into partnership with Dr. Clint Anderson and remained in partnership until his death. On May 29, 1976, he married Carol Wernlund at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin. They had three children.
He took great pride in veterinary medicine and had a close working relationship with his veterinary partner. He was a member of the AABP (American Association of Bovine Practitioners). He published articles in recognized veterinary medicine journals. Personally, he enjoyed life. He liked flying and was a private pilot. He also enjoyed downhill skiing and scuba diving. He did wood working and made various types of furniture, and was a member of the Brewsters Society, which collected Kaleidoscopes.
He is survived by: his wife, Carol of Baldwin; sons, Lance, Tyler and Austin of Baldwin; father, Albert Van Damme of Minneota, Minn.; brothers, Joel (Donna) Van Damme of Russell, Minn., Jim (Vicki) Van Damme of Lynd, Minn.; sisters, Collette (Ron) Grussing of Clara City, Minn., Pam (Brian) Heldt of Dexter, Mich., Jackie (David) Abel of Watertown, S.D.; mother-in-law, Arlene Wernlund of Baldwin; brothers-in-law, Russ Wernlund of Jacksonville, Fla., Glen (Patty) Wernlund of Baldwin, Paul (Becky) Wernlund of Brown Deer; sister-in-law, Lois (Tom) McEvoy of Austin, Tex., as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his mother, Ardell; two sisters; one brother; and father-in-law, Jack Wernlund.
Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 5, at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin. Officiating was Pastor Harlan DeJong with assistance from Carol's brother, Pastor Paul Wernlund. Organist Ann Staal accompanied vocalists Peggy Burnside and Kris Wellens. Casketbearers were: Jeff Peterson, Troy Peterson, Mark Tyler, Bill Juen, Ross Fellinger and Chad Terpstra. Private intermenty was in the Baldwin Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the American Red Cross or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Dorothy A. Schillinger, 86
SPRING VALLEY - Dorothy A. Schillinger, age 86, of Hersey died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at the Baldwin Care Center, where she had been a resident for about the past six months.
She was born April 9, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Abbie (Harris) Colburn in Springfield Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed and presently a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville.
On July 9, 1932, she married Clarence "George" Schillinger at the Methodist parsonage in Knapp. They had six children. They owned and operated Schillinger's Bar at Hersey for 37 years. She also milked cows on their farm north of Hersey. She also enjoyed fishing with her husband.
Survivors include: five sons, Donald (Betty) of Superior; James (Melba) of Wilson, Marshal (Nancy) of Del Norte, Colo., Fred (Sylvia) of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Gregory (Maurice) of Wilson. She is also survived by: 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Jack (Betty) Colburn of Woodville and Fred (Jeanette) Colburn of Wilson; five sisters, Ruby (John) Bauer of Woodville, Lillian (Walter) Cassellius of Emerald, Bernice Cassellius of Boyceville, Virginia (Herb) Langer of St. Paul and Francis VonBehren of St. Paul; many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, George, who died in May 1998; infant daughter, Jane; two brothers, infant brother Donald and Everett Colburn; three sisters, Margaret Hunter, Violet Schreiber and Celia Wilke; great granddaughter, Whitney Hugdahl.
Funeral service was Thursday, Aug. 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville. Rev. Shawn Kauffeld officiated the service with music provided by organist Sharleen Bammert with congregational singing. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Hersey. Bearers were grandsons: Troy, Rick, Jody, Steve, Scott and Sam Schillinger.

Geraldine 'Gerry' M. Furney, 70
HAGER CITY - Geraldine "Gerry" M. Furney, age 70, of Hager City died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at her home.
She was born May 20, 1929, in Red Wing, the daughter of Fred and Ellen (Hanson) Rosener. She was a 1948 graduate of Goodhue (Minn.) High School. She worked for Red Wing Pottery in the art department and for the Coast-to-Coast in Hastings, Minn., for 10 years. She married Glen Furney in 1948 in Mason City, Ia. They owned and operated the Inver Grove Motel for nine years. They moved to their retirement home in Hager City in 1989.
She enjoyed flower gardening and garage sales. She was a wonderful cook and baker, her life revolved around her family.
She is survived by: her husband, Glen of Hager City; four children, Sandra (Willie) Sacre of Stratham, N.H., Yvonne Cadalbert of Center City, Minn., Darlene (Dean) Arneson of Ellsworth and Gerald Furney of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren; one brother, Ernest (Fran) Rosener of Red Wing.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Winifred Jewel.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 7, at Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with Rev. David McDowell officiating. Interment was in Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings.

Ann Dravis Brewer-Sampson, 88
RIVER FALLS - Ann Dravis Brewer-Sampson, age 88, of River Falls, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 at the River Falls Area Hospital.
She was born Nov. 23, 1910 in Prescott, the daughter of Henry and Jane Dravis. She married Clyded Brewer Feb. 22, 1940. She later married LeRoy Sampson May 2, 1950.
She owned and operated the Dresbach Motel and was the postmaster in Dresbach, Minn. until her retirement. She was the past Worthy Matron of the Evening Star Post 71, Order of the Eastern Star in LaCresent, Minn.
Survivors include: one daughter, Carel Hoskins of Ottumwa, Iowa; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; three brothers, Wallace, Herman and Bill dravis; six sisters, Marry Hamman, Minni Edgar, Ethel Wirth, Pearl Hamman, Ella Schnack and Celia Miller.
A memorial services will be held Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Prescott at 1:30 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-1:30 p.m. Interment of her cremated remains will be in the Pine Glen Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to donors choice.

Virgil Kenal, 87
Virgil Kenal, age 87, of Ellsworth, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999 at the Ellsworth Care Center.
Services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. Rev. Paul Martin will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth. Friends may call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Virgil M. Kenall, 87
Virgil M. Kenall, age 87, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Sept. 3, 1911, in Ellsworth Township, the daughter of Frank S. and Emma (Bunce) Kline. She was a graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School and River Falls Normal School. She taught in various Pierce County schools. She married Lee Kenall June 24, 1931, in Ellsworth.
She served on the Ellsworth Library Board, was active in Ellsworth Senior Citizens and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by: three children, Richard (Barbara) Kenall of Webster, James (Marcy) Kenall of Ellsworth and Gayle (Robert) MaGee of Tavernier, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband and one brother, Melvin.
Services were held Thursday, Aug. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, with Rev. Paul Martin officiating. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.
Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, handled arrangements.
