Thora A. Tofte, 91
Thora A. Tofte, age 91, Red Wing and formerly of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
She was born March 25, 1908, in Trenton Township to John and Mathilda (Berg) Anderson. A graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School and River Falls Teachers College, she taught at rural and grade schools in Pierce and Goodhue (Minn.) counties for 35 years.
She married James Gustafson. He died, and she married Arthur Tofte.
She was a lifelong member of Svea Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women and sewed quilts. She was a member of local, state and federal teachers organizations.
She was preceded in death by: her two husbands; two children, John and Carol Gustafson; one sister, Agnes Peterson; and two brothers, Sidney and Emil Anderson.
Funeral was Saturday at Svea Lutheran Church with the Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Norma J. Thompson, 68
RIVER FALLS - Norma Jean Thompson, age 68, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
The daughter of Chester and Hattie (Wilcox) Truesdill, she was born June 22, 1931. She attended Ellsworth Senior High School. She married John H. Thompson on April 4, 1952. They had a daughter, Deborah, and a son, David.
She is survived by: her son, David and Laura; three grandchildren, Derek, Leah and Zachary.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, John; a brother; and a daughter, Deborah.
Funeral was Friday, Aug. 13, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Kebschull and the Rev. Milton Aarsvold officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ken Hinz, Jr., Jeff Hinz, John Hinz, Gordon Truesdill, Jr., Ronald Trusedill and Raymond Truesdill.

Carol A. Blakeborough, 80
Carol A. Blakeborough (nee Larson), age 80, of Glenwood City died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Holy Family Hospital in New Richmond.
She was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Martell Township to Albin and Clara (Jenson) Larson. She attended grade school at Morton Corners and continued her schooling at Ellsworth and River Falls, where she graduated high school at age 16. She took a home business course, which helped in doing the bookkeeping for her father at the Lawton Creamery.
She married Lawrence Blakeborough on June 26, 1940, at South Rush River Lutheran Church. They moved to Glenwood City in 1956, where she did the bookkeeping for her husband.
She is survived by: her husband, Lawrence Blakeborough of Glenwood City; two sons, Barry Blakeborough and wife Linda of Madison and Greg Blakeborough and wife Doddie of Amery; five grandchildren, Megan Tucker and husband Dan, and Ty, Cole, Tara and Dru Blakeborough; two sisters and one brother, Marcella Christopherson and husband Lemoine of Ellsworth, Shirley Snyder of Hudson and Peggy Larson and wife Lucy of River Falls. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, Albin and Clara; sister, Helen Christopherson; infant brother; and stepfather, Robert Westfield.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Glenwood City, with Rev. Carmen Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Our Savior's Cemetery, Ellsworth Township. Friends may call at the Everts Funeral Home in Glenwood City on Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial preferred to Holy Cross in lieu of flowers.
Shoshannah 'Suzi' A. Langer, 20
Shoshannah "Suzi" A. Langer, age 20, Ellsworth, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis, after a lifetime of health problems.
She was born April 20, 1979, in Red Wing to Vicki and James Langer. She enjoyed babies, children, birds, music, long walks and family. She collected dolls and carousel horses. She was thrilled to be able to go on a family vacation to Branson, Mo. She especially enjoyed the Presley Family Country Jubilee with Jay and DeVonna Wichizer.
Survivors include: her parents; one sister, Shannine (Douglas) Borth of Plum City; two brothers, Jamie (Becky) Langer and Jeremy R. Langer of Ellsworth; maternal grandparents, Wava and Clark Glaser of Venice, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Dorothy and Fred Langer of River Falls; one niece and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service was Monday, Aug. 16, at English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with the Revs. Lauryl Stockness, Harlen Menk and Paul Martin officiating. Burial was at Thurston Hill Cemetery, Trimbelle Township.

Donna M. Langer, 69
Donna M. Langer, age 69, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
She was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Mayville, N.D., the daughter of John and Ella (Wallace) Port. She was a 1948 graduate of Page High School, N.D. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.
She married LaVern Langer July 18, 1959, in St. Paul.
She was diagnosed with M.S. in 1972, although she first noticed symptoms of M.S. in 1960. She was a supporter of the M.S. Society, participating in any event that supported the M.S. cause. She served as the M.S. Ambassador in 1999, active with the M.S. TRAM. She also volunteered for Pierce County and for the American Cancer Society.
She wrote weekly news for the local papers. She enjoyed seeing people on bicycles and motorcycles and the kids participating in the M.S. Readathon.
She had a bright outlook on life, saying, "I made up my mind a long time ago that I couldn't change my health, so I dealt with it and took it one day at a time." She pushed herself to the limit.
She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, and 50-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She is survived by: her husband of Ellsworth; two sisters and one brother, Barbara (Dennis) Kent, Duluth, Minn., Wendell (Marie) Port, Moorhead, Minn., and Darlene (Charles) Satrom, Page, N.D.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Father Thomas Donaldson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Laurel B. Condit, 97
ELMWOOD - Laurel B. Condit, age 97, of Elmwood, formerly of Arkansaw, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
She was born June 23, 1902, in Arkansaw, the daughter of Archie and Rosabel (Taylor) Dunbar, and grew up in that community. She graduated from Arkansaw High School, attended UW-Stout and graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She married Willis Condit Jan. 23, 1926. After marriage, they farmed in the Rock Elm community until 1950, when they moved to Des Moines, Ia. She taught school in Des Moines until 1967, when they moved to Arkansaw. He died in 1970 and, in 1990, she became a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, where she has remained the rest of her life.
She is survived by: her son, Dr. Elroy Condit of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two grandsons, Dr. Randall (Karen) Condit, M.D. of La Crosse and Gary (Sharon) Condit of Chanhassen, Minn.; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; a brother, Austin Dunbar; two sisters, Ferol Sandow and Winifred Cowell.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the United Methodist Church-Rock Elm, rural Elmwood, with Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery-Rock Elm.

Alfred Carlson, 74
Alfred A. Carlson, age 74, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in St. Paul to Albert and Alice Carlson and attended schools in St. Paul. He married Doris Zietlow June 21, 1946, in St. Paul. He worked at Twin City Brick. They moved to Red Wing in 1960; she died in 1961. He worked at Red Wing Ready-Mix until 1965, then for Monson Trucking until retiring in February 1990.
He married Marcia Sather Oct. 9, 1965, in Ellsworth. A member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, he enjoyed mechanical hobbies.
He is survived by: his wife, Marcia; one son, Gary (Cindy) of Red Wing; one grandson; one brother, Melvin (Sue) of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Verna Daily of St. Paul and Betty (Roy) Sumner of Apopka, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and one brother, Richard.
Funeral was Friday, Aug. 20, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Eisenmann officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Herbert H. Vogt, 87
Herbert H. Vogt, age 87, of Ellsworth died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Ellsworth Care Center.
He was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Hay Creek Township (Minn.), the son of Adolph and Emma (Holst) Vogt. He attended Wells Creek School in Hay Creek Township.
He married Ivy Lidgerding, Dec. 16, 1938, in Red Wing. He worked on the Alaskan Pipeline for one year during WWII. He worked at Red Wing Shoe for a short time, then farmed near Cannon Falls, Minn. He then worked at Riedell's in Red Wing from Dec. 7, 1945, until retiring on Oct. 20, 1971. He is the last of six founders of Riedell's. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by: one son, Stephen (Helen) Vogt of Bay City; one daughter, Rita (Harvey) Lehman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Sophia Larkey of Bay City; one niece.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother, Robert.
Funeral services were to be held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Loren Lucht officiating. Burial was to be in Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Memorials preferred to American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Inez S. Anway, 76
Inez Stella Anway, age 76, of Red Wing died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Carl and Matilda (Redum) Anderson. She attended schools in Ellsworth and Red wing. Following school, she moved to the Twin Cities area and did housework. She married Russell Anway on Dec. 28, 1943. They farmed in the Welch, Minn., area for many years. After farming, they lived on Munson Hill. He died on June 25, 1985. In 1994, she moved to Red Wing.
She was a member of United Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, animals, especially hummingbirds, flowers and embroidery work.
She is survived by: three sons, Alan (Sandy) Anway of Marquette, Mich., Curt and William Anway of Red Wing; three daughters, Betty (Larry) Larson of Red Wing, Helen (Steve) Marsello of Hastings, Minn., and Marlene Wilson of Red Wing; and eight grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by: her husband; two brothers, Oliver and Marion Anderson; and two sisters, Ann Gilbertson and Ethel Tennis.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 21, at United Lutheran Church with Rev. Randall D. Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing.

David S. Oellrich, 68
David S. Oellrich, age 68, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at the Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.
He was born July 8, 1931, in Trenton Township, the son of Archie and Evangeline (Oberg) Oellrich. He and his wife owned and operated the 63 Bar in Ellsworth for 42 years.
He is survived by: his wife Ruth (Stelling) of Ellsworth; daughter, Candiee (James) Johnson of Ellsworth; and son, Michael also of Ellsworth; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Irving and Marvin.
Funeral services were to be held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Burial was to be at the Svea Lutheran Cemetery in Hager City.

Ruth Mattson, 63
LUND - Ruth La Vonne Mabel Mattson, age 63, of Lund died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in her home.
She was born in Maiden Rock Township on Sept. 17, 1935, to Edmund and Viola (Sjostrom) Mattson. She graduated from Maiden Rock High School in 1953 and went on to graduate from UW-Stout in 1957 with a teaching degree. She taught home economics in Prescott for 30+ years.
She was a lifetime resident of Lund. She was a lifelong member of Sabylund Lutheran Church, where she was very active in music, floral decoration and quilting with the Women's circle. She loved flowers, cats and entertaining guests.
She is survived by: her cousins, Flora (Norman) Holt of Bay City, Elsie Mattson of Bay City, Bud (Betty) Mattson of Red Wing, Harry (Jean) Mattson of Aquilla, Tex.; special friend, Harriet Bostrom of Lund; and many more loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Viola, and her brother, Edmund, Jr.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Sabylund Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynne Rigg officiating. Interment was in Sabylund Lutheran Church. Pallbearers were: Terry Mattson, Dwight Mattson, Gary Bee, James Bostrom, Neil Bostrom, Jon Anderson, Elliot Bjurquist and Stanley Swenson, Jr. Music was provided by David Zohn, organist, Nancy Fitzsimons and Lori Johns, soloists.
