Clifford M. Hanson, 88
Clifford M. Hanson, age 88, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at his home.
He was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Trenton Township, the son of Charles and Terry (Nash) Hanson. He married Pearl Plumley in 1944 in Red Wing. He drove truck for the Pierce County Highway Department for 35 years and was a member of the Ellsworth Fire Department for 30 years.
He is survived by: one son, David (Margaret) Hanson of St. Croix Falls; two granddaughters; four brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Hanson of Ellsworth, Robert (Betty) Hanson of Ellsworth, Donald (Loretta) Hanson of Stillwater, Minn., and Howard Hanson of Red Wing; two sisters, Myrtle (Harley) Christenson of Ellsworth and Joyce Kruse of Red Wing.
He was preceded in death by: his wife; one son, Martin; his long-time companion, Emily Leonard; six brothers and sisters.
Services were Saturday, Sept. 11, at English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Harlen Menk officiating. Burial was in Bethel Covenant Cemetery.
Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, handled arrangements.

Howard A. Nelson, 67
MARTELL TOWNSHIP - Howard Allen Nelson, 67, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Hennepin County (Minn.) Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Jan. 22, 1932, to Fritz and Lillian Nelson of Martell Township.
Surviving him are: his wife, Ruth; sons, Tom and Allen; daughters, Linda and Patty; brother, Lawrence Nelson, Frederic; sisters, Esther Lundgaard, Martell, Joyce (Rennith) Johnson, Ellsworth, Margaret (Tom) Driscoll, Prescott, Florence (Howard) Miller, River Falls, and Grace (Greg) Williams, Chicago; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Private services will be held.

Robert 'Bobby' Erlandson, 70
Robert "Bobby" Erlandson, age 70, died suddenly at his Arizona home on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999.
He is survived by: his wife, Shirley; two sisters, Ellen of Red Wing and Edna Hines of Cumberland; two brothers, Laurie of Prescott and Steve of Ellsworth.
Funeral services will be in Arizona. A memorial will be at Our Savior's at a later date.

Richard 'Dick' P. Fuller, 71
Richard "Dick" P. Fuller, age 71, of Ellsworth died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Clinton, Ia., Nov. 12, 1927, the son of Russell and Anne (Pedersen) Fuller. He was a 1945 graduate of Osseo High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater.
He married Phyllis Castad Nov. 27, 1947, in Osseo. He graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1955 and later received his Masters Degree from the U of M. He taught school in California for a couple of years and then moved to Ellsworth, where he taught eighth grade until becoming the junior high school principal. He retired from that position in 1989.
He was an avid sportsman. He was a member of English Lutheran Church.
He is survived by: his wife of Ellsworth; two daughters, Elizabeth (Gerhard) Beenen of Beaverton, Ore., and Mary (Nicholas) Gebelt of Charlottesville, Va.; two grandchildren; one sister, Antoinette "Toy" Oftedahl of Osseo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were Monday, Sept. 13, at English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with the Revs. Harlen Menk and Lauryl Stockness officiating. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Melvin 'Mel' L. Sather, 55
BELDENVILLE - Melvin "Mel" L. Sather, age 55, of Beldenville died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at his log home in Grantsburg of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Nov. 2, 1943, in Appleton, the son of Clarence and Bernice (Shellito) Sather. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Beldenville. He graduated in 1961 from Ellsworth Senior High School and attended UW-River Falls for one year. He served in the U.S. Naval/Air Reserve for two years. He married Carol Johnson Dec. 4, 1965.
He was a charter member of the Eau Galle/Rush River Sportsman's Club and 4-H member/leader for 17 years. He enjoyed hunting, participating in the Lawton Pool League and the El Paso Euchre League, traveling and spending time at their log home, that was just built in rural Grantsburg. He farmed all his life in Ellsworth and Martell townships and he retired from milking Jerseys three years ago.
He is survived by: his wife, Carol of Beldenville; two sons, Jody (Stephanie) Sather of Beldenville and Gerald Sather of Chicago; one granddaughter; one sister, Marlene (Trent) Schmotzer of Red Wing; three nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an aunt, an uncle and one niece.
Services were Saturday, Sept. 11, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beldenville with Rev. John Sutherland officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Grace A. Hansen, 79
SPRING VALLEY - Grace Alpha Hansen, age 79, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center in Spring Valley.
She was born in Spring Lake Township on Sept. 20, 1919, to Peter and Ellen (Jergensen) Hanson. At age two, the family moved to town, where she resided for the rest of her life. She attended Spring Valley schools and graduated in 1938. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. She had sung in the church junior and senior choirs for 13 years and also taught Sunday School for a few years.
On Sept. 2, 1939, she was married to Walter L. Hansen at Dubuque, Ia. They had three children, Winston, Glenna and Mary Ellen. He died Dec. 8, 1983.
She is survived by: her three children, Winston (Judi) of Minnetonka, Minn., Glenna (Bruce) Gunderson of Waupaca and Mary Ellen (Robert) Peterson of Frederic; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, Walter; three sisters, Edith Lamon, Irene Duffy and Fern Dupere; and three brothers, Otto Hanson, Vinton Hanson and Harvey Hanson.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiated the service with music provided by organist Linda Anderson with congregational singing. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Eunice M. Burridge, 85
HAGER CITY - Eunice Mae Burridge, age 85, of Trenton Township died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1914, in Chandler, Colo., the daughter of William and Beatrice (Gilbert) Tonso. She attended school in Chicago. She returned to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1932 and worked in the family weather stripping business. She married Joe Burridge April 3, 1943, in Denver. They lived in Colorado Springs until moving to Hager City in 1974. As a hobby, she decorated eggs and made ceramics.
She is survived by: her husband, Joe Burridge of Hager City; one son, Sam (Diane) Burridge of Aurora, Colo.; one granddaughter; nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Mona Reece and Jon Knochenmus officiating. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Denver. Visitation will be at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the time of services at the funeral home.

Marie H. (Traynor) York, 85
RIVER FALLS - Marie Helen (Traynor) York, age 85, died Monday morning, Sept. 6, 1999, at her home in River Falls.
She was born on Sept. 7, 1913, in Olivet of El Paso Township to Sylvester and Ida (Mercer) Traynor. She married Delmar William York of Rock Elm on March 16, 1938, in Spring Valley. They lived for a few years in South Dakota before moving to the River Falls area for many years and then moving to a farm south of River Falls in 1954, where they farmed for 22 years. They moved into River Falls in 1976 to the Edgewater Apartments, where she lived until her death.
She was a farm wife until she took a job at Langware Coat Factory in 1972 and worked there for two years. Upon moving into River Falls in 1976, she began working at the Lutheran Nursing Home as a dietary aide, where she worked until retiring in 1988. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and spent many enjoyable hours bird-watching and tending to her flowers.
She is survived by: one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sherry (Vande Vrede) York of Ellsworth; one granddaughter, Heather York of River Falls; one brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Evelyn (Peten) Traynor of Spring Valley; one sister-in-law, Bernice (Hanson) Traynor, also of Spring Valley; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by: her husband, Delmar; parents, Sylvester and Ida; one sister, Juanita (Traynor) Gillis; one brother, Sylvester, Jr.; and one grandniece.
A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church in River Falls on Friday morning, Sept. 10. Dr. Delbert Pearmann officiated. Internment was at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred.
Cashman's Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Iona Eastlund, 80
Iona Eastlund, age 80, of Red Wing died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
She was born Oct. 14, 1918, in Pierce County to Leroy and Belle (Hogan) Funk. After attending Oak Center country school, she graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School in 1935. She went to cosmetology school in St. Paul and worked for several years as a beautician at Cecil Holst's Salon in Red Wing. During World War II, she enlisted in the Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps. She married Alfred Ernie Eastlund in Red Wing on Feb. 23, 1943.
As a member of United Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School, served on the altar guild, various committees and became the first female member of the council. She was active for many years in St. John's Hospital Auxiliary, serving as president for two years. Since 1980, they spent winters near Port Charlotte and Arcadia, Fla. She enjoyed square dancing, camping, playing cards, sewing, cooking and baking.
Survivors include: her husband of Red Wing; three daughters, Cheryl (Wayne) Gilbertson of Maplewood, Minn., Connie (Carl) Deobald of Rochester, Minn., and Carol (Charles Stinson) Eastlund of Minnetonka, Minn.; one son, Carl Eastlund of Bemidji, Minn.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: three brothers, Kenneth, Arthur and Walter Funk, and her identical twin sister, Shirley Halverson.
Memorial service was Friday at United Lutheran Church with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Memorials are preferred to United Lutheran Church Building Fund and Red Wing Regional Hospice. Cremation services were provided by Larson Funeral Home, Minneapolis.

Everett J. Meyers, 66
SPRING VALLEY - Everett Jay Meyers, age 66, of Spring Valley died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the Baldwin Hospital. He had been taken by ambulance from his home that morning.
He was born Aug. 25, 1933, the son of Edward and Iva (Robole) Meyers at Hersey. He attended school at Woodville. He was presently a member of Martell Methodist Church, Spring Valley.
At age 17, he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 19, 1956, he married Carol Hampton at Woodville. They had four sons: Jay, Wade, Clifton and Shane. He worked for the Knapp Creamery for a few years before becoming employed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He worked for the highway department for 37 years, retiring in 1994.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Eau Galle-Rush River Sportsman's Club and the Woodville American Legion Post 301. He was an avid Packer fan and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include: his wife, Carol of Spring Valley; four sons, Jay (Mary) of Blaine, Minn., Wade (DeAnna) of Knapp, Clifton (Tammy) of Spring Valley and Shane (Sandra) of Elmwood. He is also survived by: 13 grandchildren; his twin brother, Edward (Betty) of Colfax; two sisters, Jane (Bill) Freese of Woodville and Delores Larson of River Falls; brother-in-law, Merle Andresen of Menomonie; sister-in-law, Donna Meyers of New Richmond; several other brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; his stepfather, Clarence Frederick; three sisters, Mae Andresen, Ione Ludvig and Violet Meyers; and two brothers, Dale Meyers and an infant brother.
Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 10, at Gilman Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, with Rev. Gary Swanson officiating. Music was provided by organist Carole Lynum and vocalists Charlotte Wentlandt and Marion Anderson. Burial was in Martell Methodist Cemetery, Martell Township. Pallbearers were: Steve Price, Don Stevens, Tim Wood, Irv Pax, Bill Hanson and Rick Jensen.

Jack H. Kapping, 73
SPRING VALLEY - Jack Henry Kapping, age 73, of Spring Valley died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center. He entered the care center on March 17, 1999.
He was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Rock Elm Township, the son of Henry and Theresa (Rodewald) Kapping. He attended Elmwood High School, where he graduated in 1943. On Dec. 10, 1948, he married Bonnie Trealoff. They farmed on the Maple Springs Farm until they moved to Loyal in 1953. They farmed there until 1958, when they moved to the farm in Hatchville which they ran for 40 years. They had eight children: Stephen, Susan, Judith, Roger, Terri, Wayne, Pam and Linda.
He was dearly loved by his family and all who knew him. As a family and friends, rest assured that through faith he now lives in peace and is with his family and friends that preceded him in death in God's kingdom for eternity.
He is survived by: his wife, Bonnie of Spring Valley; his children, Stephen of Spring Valley, Susan Gregg of Spring Valley, Judith (Mark) Hammer of River Falls, Roger (Sue) of River Falls, Terri Sampson of Elmwood, Pam (Kelly) Falde of Spring Valley and Linda (Ron) DeMotts of Baldwin. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville. Rev. Shawn Kauffeld will officiate. Music will be provided by organist Sharleen Bammert and vocalists Cindy Kongshaug and Rev. Shawn Kauffeld. Burial will be in Poplar Hill Cemetery, Rock Elm Township.

Seldon J. Schinke, 85
BAY CITY - Seldon James Schinke, age 85, Red Wing, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Hi-Park Care Center.
He was born June 4, 1914, in Red Wing to William and Ella (Abbey) Schinke and graduated from Red Wing Central High School. He married Marie Dahling. He lived and worked in Red Wing until moving in 1959 to Welch Township (Minn.).
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by: his wife; two sons, David (Sandra) of Bloomington, Minn., and Duane (Marian) of Loveland, Colo.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Charlson of Red Wing and Eldora (Donald) Sears of Bay City.
He was preceded in death by: one son, Donald; one brother, Roland; and two sisters, Violet Rosenquist and Elaine Edblom.
Funeral was at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carol Noren officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Brian, Mark and Mike Schinke, Melissa Lovell, Lara Olson, Cynthia and Don Reiners. Memorials are preferred to the church.
