Suzanne Joy Nelson
MAIDEN ROCK - Suzanne Joy Nelson of rural Stockholm died at her home early Sunday, March 22, 1998, after a year-long battle with cancer. She was 53.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1945, in Lancaster, Minn., the daughter of Guilford and Lily (Peterson) Wilson. She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1953.
She married Stephen Pomahatch on Feb. 27, 1971, in Mounds View, Minn., where she lived until moving to Stockholm in 1980. They were later divorced.
She married Martin John Nelson on July 6, 1985, in Stockholm.
She was employed at the Pepin Manor from 1981 until 1987. She enjoyed gardening, farming, sewing, spending time with family and friends and was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Sabylund Lutheran Church.
She is survived by: her husband, Marty; two sons, Denton Pomahatch of Coon Rapids, Minn., Ryan (Tricia) Wilson of Cambridge, Minn.; sisters, Patricia (Jerry) Lysford of Lakeville, Minn., Ruth (Al) Reddington of Andover, Minn., Peggy (Randy) Nordin of Lancaster, Minn., Michelle (Kenny) Colaizy of St. Paul and Jody Wilson of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one brother, Doug Wilson; and one niece, Dawn Wilson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Sabylund Lutheran Church with Rev. Lynne Rigg, pastor, officiating. Luella Dettling will be organist and Lori Johns soloist. Visitation was to be held on Tuesday, March 24, at the Swandby-Murphy Funeral Home, Maiden Rock, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be: Lindsay Bergquist, Mike Setterlund, Shawn Reddington, Craig Reddington, Jesse Wilson and Jason Linder. Interment will be in Sabylund Cemetery.

Eldon Henry Rieck
BAY CITY - Eldon Henry Rieck, Red Wing, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Hi-Park Care Center, where he lived three years. He was 75.
He was born Nov. 17, 1922, in Belvidere Township, Minn., to Bernhard and Elsa (Hauschildt) Rieck. He attended school in Frontenac, Minn., and then moved to Bay City. He did custom farm work and later drove truck. He also owned and operated a trucking business and drove truck for Bay City Silica Company for approximately 30 years. He retired in 1989 and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by: one sister, Margaret (Elmer) Fitschen of Red Wing; two brothers, Arnodl (Irene) of Bay City and Donald (Connie) of Ellsworth; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral was Friday, March 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Loren Lucht officiating. Burial was in Burnside Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Homes, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and for one hour before the service. Pallbearers were: Gordon and Emergy Fitschen, Randy Peterson, Dennis, Rodney and Rolland Rieck.
Edna Florence Wasson
SPRING VALLEY - Edna Florence Wasson of Spring Valley died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, Elmwood. She was 82.
She was born May 12, 1915, in Oak Grove Township, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Arnold) Simon. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley. She grew up west of River Falls, where she attended the Mann Valley Stone School.
On Nov. 20, 1934, she married Clarence Wasson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. They farmed in the Mann Valley, east of River Falls, near Ellsworth and near Spring Valley. After retiring from the farm, they moved into Spring Valley, where she lived until becoming a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home on March 1, 1990.
Besides farming, she worked at Stokley's Cannery in Lakeland, Minn., and at the overall factory in River Falls. She was also a cook at Crystal Cave and at the Spring Valley Health Care Center. She was active in the Olivet Homemakers Club, 4-H and was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by: 11 children, Jean Borneman of White River, S.D., Floyd (Vivian) Wasson of Westfield, Patricia (Luther) Johnson of Hudson, Alice (Charles) Parker of North Port, Ala., Mary (Harold) Thompson of Spring Valley, Rita (Curt) Abbott of Dent, Minn., Charlene (Henry) Hoevel of Montello, Linda (Daniel) Ness of Osseo, Karen (Michael) Williams of Portage, Kathy (Conrad James) Rognholt and Dennis Wasson of New Richmond; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Cernohous of River Falls and Grace Herring of Montrose, Ia.; sisters-in-law Jeanette Simon of River Falls and Florence Simon of Hudson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Clarence; son, Steven; brothers, Leon and Raymond Simon; and son-in-law, Robert Borneman.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley. Fr. Ambrose Blenker officiated, assisted by Sister Karen Freund. Music was provided by organist Ellen Rominski and the church choir.
Honorary bearers were: Chris Borneman, Charles Parker, Jeff Thompson, Frank Thompson and Pvt. Steven Rognholt. Bearers were: Mike Borneman, Brian Wasson, Floyd Johnson, Carl Abbott, Matthew Ness, James Rognholt, Randy Thompson and Tim Hoevel.

Florence E. Nafe
HAGER CITY - Florence E. Nafe of Hager City died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing. She was 79.
She was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Fort Dodge, Ia., the daughter of Will and Mathilda (Heilkamp) Kreimar. She grew up in the Fort Dodge area.
She married Dale Nafe on Dec. 5, 1937, in Fort Dodge. The couple moved to Des Moines, Ia., then moved to Minneapolis in 1953 and Burnsville, Minn., in 1964. The couple retired and moved to Diamond Bluff in 1984. He died Oct. 25, 1993.
She was a member of Diamond Bluff Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting and bird watching.
She is survived by: one son, William (Janet) Nafe of Hager City; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel (Raymond) Oleson of Ft. Dodge.
She was preceded by her husband, Dale Nafe.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 21, at the Mahn Family Funeral Homes, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Rev. Dale Wordelman officiating. Burial was in the Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines. Pallbearers: Andrea Nafe, Robert Nafe, Terrance Nafe, Timothy Nafe.

Helen P. Christopherson
Helen P. Christopherson of Ellsworth died Friday, March 20, 1998, at Ellsworth Care Center. She was 81.
She was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Martell Township to Albin and Clara (Jensen) Larson.
She married Marvin Christopherson on Dec. 2, 1936, at South Rush River Lutheran Church. They farmed in Ellsworth Township until they moved to the Village of Ellsworth in 1981. She worked at Sunnyside School for many years. She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: two daughters, Janice (Leonard) Machacek of South St. Paul, Minn., and Sandra (Peter) Ruikka of Neillsville; one son, Doug (Wendy) of Wausau; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carol (Lawrence) Blakeborough of Glenwood City, Marcella (Lemoine) Christopherson of Ellsworth and Shirley Snyder of Hudson; one brother, Perry (Lucy) Larson of River Falls.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin.
Funeral was to be Tuesday, March 24, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beldenville, with the Rev. John Sutherland officiating. Burial was to be in the church cemetery.

Mavis M. Rudiger
Mavis M. Rudiger of Menomonie died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at her home with hospice. She was 78.
She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Ellsworth to Arvia and Inez (Roatch) Merriman. She was raised in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School in 1938. She owned and operated the Little Grand Cafe in Ellsworth and later worked at the Hudson House in Hudson. Before her marriage, she worked as a waitress at the Flame Lounge in Menomonie.
She married Eugene Rudiger Feb. 18, 1946, in Menomonie. She was then a homemaker and enjoyed raising her family. She was a member of the Hudson Road Homemakers and Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She loved bowling and bowled in the Bowlerettes League. She was also an avid Packer fan and stock car racing fan. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by: her husband, Eugene Rudiger of Menomonie; four sons, Jerry Rudiger of Copper Hill, Va., Lee (Marilyn) Rudiger of Menomonie, Tom Rudiger of Jackson, Minn., Steve (DiAnn) Rudiger of Menomonie; 12 grandchildren, James, Alicia, Terra and Gaia Rudiger, Kurt (Donna) Rudiger, Jeffrey (Jessica) Rudiger, Mark (Jennifer) Rudiger, Thom J. Rudiger, Angela (Todd) Hamlet, Tina, Heidi and Mindy Rudiger; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Hayley and Gavin Rudiger; four brothers and two sisters, Maxine (Paul) Buck of Roberts, Romona "Monie" Merriman of River Falls, Bill (Louise) Merriman of Hayward, Everal "Bud" (Donna) Merriman of Couderay, Max (Betty) Merriman of River Falls, Merlin (Bonni) Merriman of Baldwin; nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

SPRING VALLEY - Lloyd Sweeney of Rice Lake, formerly of Spring Valley, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, as a result of injuries in a car accident. He was 20.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville, with Rev. Shawn Kauffeld officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Larry Studer
Larry Studer of Paris, Ark., and formerly of Maiden Rock, died Thursday, March 19, 1998 at a hospital in Paris. He was 57.
He was born in Plum City Aug. 16, 1940, to George and Margaret (Bechel) Studer. He married Janet Lindhart Aug. 17, 1979 in Ellsworth. He retired from Riveria Kitchens in May 1980 due to failing health and in 1986 moved to Parish. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with old cars.
He is survived by: his wife, Janet (Lindhart) Studer of Paris; one son, Kyle Studer at home; one brother, George (Harriet) Studer of Rockford, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his father and mother; one brother, Gail "Bud" Studer; two sisters, Laverel Studer and Lorraine Studer Sundell.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Methodist Church in Maiden Rock. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

SPRING VALLEY - Lloyd Louis Sweeny of Rice Lake, formerly of Spring Valley, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, in Lucas Township, Dunn County, due to injuries received in an automobile accident. He was 20.
He was born Oct. 8, 1977, at Menomonie. He grew up in the Spring Valley and Elmwood areas. He attended school at Elmwood and was a graduate of Elmwood High School, Class of 1996. He was a Spec 4 of the Army Reserve 327th Engineer Company at Ellsworth. He was planning to attend Barron County Community College this fall to become a teacher.
Survivors include: his mother, Colleen (Lorn) Flanscha of Spring Valley; his father, Lloyd A. (Debra) Sweeny of Menomonie; his sisters, Jennifer Sweeny of Eau Claire, Bonnie Sweeny of Spring Valley, Rebecca Flanscha of Spring Valley, Mirranda Sweeny of Spring Valley, Brandi Flanscha of Menomonie and Jessica Flanscha of Manitowoc. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Louis and Betty Rineck of Menomonie; two nephews; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his maternal great-grandparents and his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Peterson.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 25, at St. John's Lutheran Church-Hatchville. Rev. Shawn Kauffeld officiated the service with music provided by organist Sharleen Bammert and congregational singing. Burial was in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Viola D. Kanten, 81, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at the Lutheran Home: River Falls, where she lived since 1995.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m., at The Lutheran home in River Falls. This is a change from where it was originally scheduled at the Nelson Funeral Home in river Falls.
