Guy 'Pete' K. Phernetton, 97
Guy "Pete" Kenneth Phernetton, age 97, of Red Wing died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
He was born May 24, 1902, in Centerville, the son of James and Mary (Hampton) Phernetton. He attended schools in Pierce County and then married Myrtle Olson in 1926. They farmed a number of years in Pierce County. She died in 1947. On Aug. 26, 1948, he married Agnes Clobes at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. They lived in Red Wing, where he was employed by Baystate Mill, retiring in 1967. She died Jan. 24, 1986.
He traveled with his brother Rob after retiring and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed the love of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by: one son, Kenneth E. (Delores) Phernetton of Hastings, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Joyce (Dick) Carter of Denver; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: both wives; one daughter, Shirley Goulette; one granddaughter, Dawn Latzke; one great-grandson, Steven Riegelman; six brothers, Melvin, Rob, Russell, Silas, Ray and Tommy; three sisters, Alice, Zilda and Minerva; and two stepdaughters, Avery Stapel and Joan Risberg.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Baldwin, with Rev. John Hanson officiating. Burial was in the North Rush River Cemetery, rural Baldwin. Pallbearers were: Chad Perry, Kenny and Jason Phernetton, Dan, Danny and Lance Poellinger, Lee Rogers, Chad and Duane Swanson.

Eugenia L. 'Jean' Klein, 73
PLUM CITY - Eugenia L. "Jean" Klein, age 73, of Plum City died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
She was born Aug. 24, 1926, the daughter of Lester and Elsie (Engeldinger) Marto. She was born in the Porcupine area, Town of Waterville, Pepin County, rural Arkansaw. She graduated from Spring Valley High School. She attended and graduated from River Falls university. After college, she taught in rural schools in the Arkansaw area. She married Raymond Klein June 16, 1947, in Plum City. After marriage, they lived in St. Paul. In 1948, they moved to the Town of Union, rural Arkansaw, where they farmed. In 1990, they moved into the Village of Plum City, where she remained the rest of her life. He died April 26, 1997.
She is survived by: two daughters, Ann Marie (Michael) Klein Madison of St. Paul, Mary Jo (Ronald) Bauer of Arkansaw; five sons, David (Lori) of Durand, James (Shirley) of Plum City, Charles (Linda) of Anoka, Minn., Douglas (Michelle) of Clear Lake, Ia., Mark (Martha) of New Richmond; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Rynders of Bellevue, Neb.
She was preceded in death by, besides her husband: one son, Jeffrey; her parents; and one sister, Donna Setterland.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 2, at St. John's Catholic Church, Plum City. Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Alex H. Kadinger, Sr., 95
PLUM CITY - Alex H. Kadinger, Sr., age 95, of Menomonie, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi.
He was born Sept. 11, 1904, and raised in the Lomira area of Dodge County. He was the son of Nicholas and Mary (Reimer) Kadinger. At age 14, he moved with his family to the Dunnville area of Dunn County, and grew up there.
He married Bessie A. Hite, Oct. 27, 1925, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand. After marriage, they farmed on the home farm until 1929. He then purchased his own farm in Southern Dunn Township, where they farmed until 1952. He retired from farming and moved to Menomonie, where he worked for Dunn County until he retired in 1969. They were married for 55 years. She died Aug. 3, 1981.
He later married Esther A. Hofland Berger on May 24, 1984, in Menomonie. They resided in the Dunn Ridge area of Menomonie until 1996. He moved to the care center as a result of a fall and broken hip in 1996 and has remained there the rest of his life.
He is survived by: his wife, Esther of Menomonie; two sons, Alex "Bud" Jr. of Menomonie and Paul (Debbie) of Eau Claire; six daughters, Gloria (Frank) Hince of Plum City, Rosanna Ritmueller of Visalia, Calif., Josphine (Leroy) Keenlyne of Elmwood, Betty (Harold) Sabelke of Mondovi, Ramona Mexxes of Steger, Ill., and Diana (Tony) Gullickson of Fresno, Calif; two brothers, Leo Kadinger of Menomonie and Frank Kadinger of Kewaskum; three sisters, Angeline Sol of Menomonie, Agnes Schumacher of Little Chute and Bernetta Probst of River Falls; 45 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Geraldine (Eugene) Trask of Menomonie and Beverley Holden of Osseo; and many step-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by: his parents; first wife, Bessie; two daughters-in-law, Verla Kadinger and Beatrice Kadinger; two sons-in-law, Edwin Ritmueller and Gerald Messex; four brothers and four sisters; and a stepson, Eugene Berger.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at St. Joesph's Catholic Church in Menomonie with the Rev. Lyle Schulte officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery. Stanton-Goodrich-Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie handled arrangements.

Francis Judd, 90
Francis Judd, age 90, Red Wing, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Hi-Park Care Center.
He was born July 22, 1909, in Steele County, Minn., to Alfred and Margaret (McGeough) Judd and graduated from Morristown High School. He was manager for Marigold Dairies in Faribault, Minn., and Red Wing from 1941 until retiring in 1974. He married Jeanne DeMarce Berg Oct. 14, 1967, in Red Wing.
He is survived by: his wife, Jeanne; two daughters, Virginia (Del) Roeder of Maui, Hawaii, and Janet (Dave) Schleusener of Rochester, Minn.; two sons, James (Cindy) of Brighton, Mich., and Danny (Jean) of Cushing; two stepsons, Vaughn (Audrey) Berg of St. Paul and Kirby (Bev) Berg of Ellsworth; one stepdaughter, Lynda (Richard) Hart of Red Wing; many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Stephen (Mamie) of Morristown, Minn.
He was preceded in death by: his two wives, Frances Temple Judd and Helen Hoffmann Judd; four brothers; and an infant grandson.
Funeral was Friday, Oct. 29, at Concordia Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ron Stehr officiating. Burial was in Bethany Cemetery, Lake City, Minn.

Loretta M. Holmquist, 87
Loretta M. (Ertel) Holmquist, age 87, of Bovey, Minn., formerly of Ellsworth, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Northern Itaska County Health Care Center in Big Fork, Minn.
She was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Ellsworth, the daughter of John and Minnie (Ellison) Ertel. She attended Sleepy Hollow School. She lived and worked most of her life in St. Paul, retiring from Swift and Company after 30 years of service to them.
After retiring, she and her husband Irving moved to Balsam, Minn.
She loved her black dog named "Dog" and garage sales.
She is survived by: her son, Ray (Mary Lou) Bergren, Circle Pines, Minn.; six grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Nelson, Cambridge, Minn.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Irving in 1995; four brothers, George, John, Charlie and Rob; two sisters, LuLa and Sophie.
Services will be held at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Hartland Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends can call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Vera J. Livingston, 58
PRESCOTT - Vera Jean Livingston, age 58, Webb Lake, and formerly of Prescott, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minn., after a two-year battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 9, 1941, in Plum City to Clifford and Grace (Griffin) Julian and graduated from Pepin High School in 1959. She married Leonard Livingston Dec. 17, 1960, in Maiden Rock. They moved to Prescott in 1966. She was a secretary for Prescott Schools for 25 years. After retiring in 1996, they moved to Webb Lake.
She had been a secretary for Century 21 for the past two years. She was an active member of Prescott United church of Christ for many years and Lakeside Lutheran Church, Webb Lake. She enjoyed nature, including collecting birds and birdhouses.
She is survived by: her husband; two daughters, Peggy (Mike) Simones of Prescott and Patricia (Brian) Peetsch of Farmington, Minn.; and six granddaughters.
Funeral was Tuesday at Prescott United Church of Christ. Burial was in Maiden Rock Cemetery.

Vincent E. Wood, 85
ELMWOOD - Vincent Elton Wood, age 85, of Elmwood died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at his home in Rock Elm Township.
He was born March 19, 1914, the fourth son of Curtis and Nellie (Gore) Wood in Salem Township. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, attended Woodside Church from 1943 until 1958 and has been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley since then.
He grew up in the Pierce County area, moving to various communities with his family. In 1933, he purchased his farm in Rock Elm Township. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and sent home $25 of his $30 per month allotment to help pay for the farm. On May 17, 1943, he married Althea Erickson at the Woodside Church. They had six children: Tom, Cherrie, Steven, Dennis, Renee and Kurt "Ed".
He loved his farm and the outdoors. He raised cows, hogs, chickens and, in later years, pea fowl. He loved the woods. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and made maple syrup for many years in his sugar bush. He was also active in his church and community and served many years on the Rock Elm Town Board.
Survivors include: his wife, Althea of Elmwood; his six children, Tom (Ann) Wood of Elmwood, Cherrie Wood of Worland, Wyo., Steven (Dawn) Wood of Elmwood, Dennis (Sandy) Wood of Elmwood, Renee (Bob) Wagnild of Vancouver, Wash., and Kurt "Ed" (Barb) Wood of Savage, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Quentin (Rhoda) Wood of River Falls and Chester (Grace) Wood of Elmwood; three sisters-in-law, Lee Wood of Spring Valley, Evelyn Mollenkopf of Pendleton, Ind., and Mary Wood of Tuscon, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents and five brothers, Warren, Kermit, Orin, Graydon and Lyle.
Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 31, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Linda Anderson, vocalist was Lisa Wood and harpist was Becky Wood. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley. Pallbearers were: Tom Wood, Steven Wood, Dennis Wood, Kurt "Ed" Wood, Ron Wood and Jason Wood.

Vera L. Schmidt, 73
Vera L. Schmidt, age 73, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Kinnic Long-Term Care Center in River Falls.
She was born March 26, 1926, in Bass Lake, Minn., to John and Hulda (Nimz) Hinz. She married Louis Schmidt March 3, 1942, in Ellsworth. They lived in the Big River area until moving to Ellsworth to farm. She worked at Red Wing Shoe Company for a short time and Smead Manufacturing in Hastings, Minn. He died in 1995. She enjoyed crocheting, flowers and gardening.
She is survived by: five children, Mary Lou (Wendell) Kubera of Lublin, Jerry (Jane) of Ellsworth, Jim (Kathy) of Hager City, Margaret (Ron) Haugen of Ellsworth and Arlene (Jim Belmore) Schmidt of Menomonie; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Kenneth (Betty) Hinz of River Falls, Keith (Bettie) Hinz of Ellsworth, Lester Hinz of Minneapolis and Gilbert Hinz of Monticello, Mo.
Preceding her in death were: her husband; one daughter, Donna Mae; and one brother, Floyd.
Funeral was Saturday, Oct. 30, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Ellsworth, with Rev. J. Keith Trembath officiating. Burial was in Pine Glen Cemetery, Prescott.

Mildred D. Halvorson, 94
Mildred D. Halvorson, age 94, of River Falls, formerly of El Paso Township died Friday, October 29, 199 at the Kinnic Long Term Care Center, River Falls.
She was born on July 30 in 1905 in Pine Valley Township in Clark County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Selicius and Mildred (O'Hara) Garfield. On June 26, 1926, she married Victor Halvorson in Red Wing. They lived and farmed in the El paso are until 1987.
Survivors include grandson David Garfield and wife Jean of Burnsville, Minn. and granddaughter Christine and her husband William Sturman , also of Burnsville.
Funeral services were held Monday at Our saviors Lutheran Church in Beldenville with pastor John Southerland officiating.

Caroline M. Albarado, 63
RED WING - Caroline Marie Albarado, age 63, of Red Wing died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Burial will be in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Visitation will be at the Bodelson-Mahn Chapel on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and on Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Mildred D. Halvorson, 94
RIVER FALLS - Mildred D. Halvorson, age 94, of River Falls, formerly of El Paso Township, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Kinnic Long Term Care Center, River Falls.
She was born on July 30, 1905, in Pine Valley Township in Clark County, the daughter of Selicius and Mildred (O'Hara) Garfield. On June 26, 1926, she married Victor Halvorson in Red Wing. They lived and farmed in the El Paso area until 1987.
Survivors include: a grandson, David Garfield (Jean) of Burnsville, Minn., and granddaughter, Christine (William) Sturman, also of Burnsville; four great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Vi Garfield of Burnsville; nieces, nephews and good friends, the Clayton McCarthy family and the Daniel Olson family.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband; her son, Dale; brothers, Albert and James; and sisters, Florence Olson and Alice Baumgartner.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beldenville with pastor John Sutherland officiating. Music was provided by organist Georgia Menk and vocalist Loralee Kiefr. Burial was in the Old Our Savior's Cemetery.

Marcia M. Carlson, 73
Marcia Marie Carlson, age 73, of Red Wing died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home.
The daughter of George and Ella (Haugen) Sather, she was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Hartland Township. She was a graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School. She married Albert Backstrom Nov. 24, 1954, in Red Wing. He died May 1, 1965. She married Alfred Carlson Oct. 9, 1965, in Ellsworth. He died Aug. 17, 1999.
She worked in the finance department of Citizen's Security Insurance for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed birdwatching and traveling.
She is survived by: one son, Gary (Cindy) Carlson of Red Wing; and Lillian (Norman) Froisland of Zumbrota, Minn.
Preceding her in death were: her two husbands and two sisters, Elaine Anderson and Dorothy Dahl.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Eisenmann officiating. Honorary pallbearers were: Nicholas Carlson, Judy Nelson, Jane Albers and Karen Anderson. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials preferred.
