Leland R. Betthauser, 62
Leland R. Betthauser, age 62, of Walworth died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee.
He was born May 14, 1937, in Tomah, the son of Ralph and Mame (Gasper) Betthauser. He married Carol Voltz April 4, 1959, in Tomah.
He was employed at Onvy Corporation in Walworth for many years until his retirement in 1999. He also owned and operated B.C. Services. He was an avid golfer, making a hole-in-one Oct. 12, 1997, at George Williams College Golf Course and also enjoyed remodeling and woodworking. He was a member of the Harvard Moose Lodge #1289.
He is survived by: his wife, Carol; one son, Curtis (Michelle) of Ellsworth; one daughter, Cathy (Kevin) Corbin of Janesville; three grandchildren; one sister, Joanne Scholze of Verona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at Toynton's Walworth Funeral Home with Rev. Donald McPeek officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family is requesting memorials to the Walworth Rescue Squad.
Elizabeth M. Holt, 82
ELMWOOD - Elizabeth M. Holt, age 82, of Elmwood died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home.
She was born May 9, 1917, in the Town of Eau Galle, Dunn County, and grew up in that community. She was the daughter of Milton and Annelle (Sinz) Smith. She graduated from Elmwood High School. She enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Woman's Army Corps during WWII. During this time, she married Bernard Holt Feb. 15, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood. After the service, they resided in Ellsworth for a few years before moving to Elmwood.
She worked for the Elmwood schools, in the cafeteria for many years. He died in 1974 and she has been a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood for the past 3-1/2 years.
She is survived by: a daughter, Rosemary Phillips of Elmwood; a son, Jerry (Jayne) Holt of Elmwood; a sister, Carolyn Maves of Menomonie; two brothers, Joseph (Gloria) Smith of Milltown and Philip (Bonnie) Smith of Madison; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Bernard; a brother, Clint Smith; a sister, Neva Krook; and a special friend, Rhene Lewis.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood with Rev. Varkey Velickakathu officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Hill cemetery-Rock Elm. Military honors provided by Crain-Ottman American Legion Post 207 of Elmwood. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Elmwood, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Alma M. Stefon, 83
SPRING VALLEY - Alma Margaret Stefon, age 83, of Spring Valley died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the Spring Valley Health Care Center.
She was born Feb. 11, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Hermina (Johnson) Gunderson in El Paso Township. She was baptized and confirmed at the Old Our Saviors Church near El Paso. She grew up and attended Wood School at El Paso. On April 26, 1932, she married John Stefon at Red Wing. They lived and farmed in El Paso until 1943, when they moved to Spring Valley.
She worked at Spring Valley Produce candling eggs and also worked at the Lawrence Bahr Turkey Farm. She worked as a bartender in Spring Valley for many years, developing numerous friendships with her patrons. She was a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed baking and everyone liked her bread, donuts and chocolate chip cookies. She spent many hours creating beautifully crafted crocheted and embroidered keepsakes.
Survivors include: four daughters, Betty Helgeson of Woodville, Elna (Allen) Cady of Spring Valley, Joy (James) Spindler of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sandra (Dean) Madson of Spring Valley. She is also survived by: eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one step-grandson; three sisters, Eleanor Dahlberg of Woodville, Gladys Leonard of Ellsworth and Helen Slocum of Elmwood; many nieces and nephews, including special niece Marlys Wheeler; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband, John, who died in 1972; two sons, John and Roger; one sister, Audrey Rigelman; and son-in-law, Clifford Helgeson.
Funeral was Thursday, Nov. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiated the service. Special music was provided by organist Linda Anderson and vocalist Matthew Kiskunas. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Valley. Honorary bearers were: Alma's seven granddaughters, Jean, Janet, Mary, Susan, Stephanie, Jillian and Joanna. Pallbearers include: grandson, Jeffrey Madson, and great-grandsons, Scott Peavey, Steven Peavey, Tony Steinke, Dustin Hurtgen and Darrin Hurtgen.

Caroline M. Albarado, 63
RED WING - Caroline Marie Albarado, age 63, of Red Wing died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
She was born July 21, 1936, in Swanville, Minn., the daughter of Joseph and Lillian (Anderson) Schwartz. She attended school in Upsala, Minn. She worked for Tension Envelope in Minneapolis as a printer for 13 years. She married Raymond Albarado in Minneapolis on May 3, 1969. She moved to Red Wing. She devoted her life to raising their daughter, Carrie. She enjoyed bowling and going for long rides in the country.
She is survived by: her husband; two daughters, Carrie Albarado of Red Wing and Sandy of Michigan; five sisters, Audrey Donley of Coon Rapids, Minn., Pauline (Walter) Garvey of Bloomington, Minn., Gladys (Al) Griffen of Gold Canyon, Ariz., Naomi (Sherman) Larson of Minneapolis, Jean (Ron) Vagle of Woodbury, Minn.; four brothers, Gerald Schwartz of Minneapolis, Jack (Carolyn) Schwartz of Alpena, Mich., Harlan Schwartz of Minneapolis, George (Vija) Schwartz of Stacey, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one sister, Georgine Schwartz; and two brothers, Duane Schwartz and Joseph Schwartz.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Rev. Edward Groop officiating. Burial was in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing.

Jack W. Steien, 66
Jack W. Steien, age 66, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at the Ellsworth Care Center.
He was born July 24, 1933, in Martell Township, the son of Walter and Alice (Peterson) Steien. He served in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marine. He was a self-employed mechanic in Newport, Minn.
He is survived by: seven children, Jackolyn Steien, Sherrie (William) Bluel, Jo (Ron) Moores, all of California, Renee (Kevin) Reckinger, Sandy Bren, Carol (Ben) Obler and David Steien, all of St. Paul; six grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, Joan (Corky) Brewer of Brookings, Ore., Anita (Curt) Skarman of Ellsworth, Jerry (Darlene) Steien of Beldenville, Karen Wilbur of Beldenville, Phillip Steien of Ellsworth, Michael (Sue) Steien of Ellsworth, Tammi (Patrick) Russell of Columbus, Ohio.
Services were Sunday at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Ellsworth, with Rev. John Sutherland officiating. The body will be cremated.

Tristan E. Neal, infant
Tristan Emmitt Neal, infant, son of Kristy Neal of Red Wing, was stillborn Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He is survived by: his mother and special friend, Chad Pomuroy of Red Wing; his grandparents, Barbara Neal and Darren Goertzen of Red Wing; one uncle; his great-grandparents, John and Diane Parsons of Lake City, Minn., and Gene Krause of Ellsworth; and great-great-grandmothers, Geneva Thoner and Rose Krause, both of Red Wing.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Emmitt Neal.
There was a private burial and family service. Arrangements were by Mahn Family Funeral Homes.
Michael D. Smith, infant
ELMWOOD - Michael David Smith, infant, son of Mark and Deanna (Gergen) Smith of Elmwood, was stillborn Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at River Falls Area Hospital.
He is survived by: his parents; his maternal grandparents, Gene and Cathy Gergen of Plum City; his maternal great-grandparents, Jim Brossard of West Concord, Minn., and Isadore and Clarice Gergen of Jordan, Minn.; his paternal grandparents, Terry and Gail Smith of Plum City; and paternal great-grandparents, James and Wilhelmina Gilles of Plum City, and Charles and Virginia Lieffring of Eau Galle.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother.
Burial will be in St. Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Mantorville, Minn. Arrangements are by Mahn Family Funeral Homes, Red Wing.
Janet I. Ebling, 86
PLUM CITY - Janet I. Ebling, age 86, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Seasons in Plum City.
She was born June 9, 1913, in Wilson, the daughter of Willis and Martha (Zuelhka) Geer. She married Ervin R. Ebling Sept. 29, 1930. She attended college and taught piano lessons.
She is survived by: her son, Murrice (Barbara) Ebling, Lake Geneva, Fla., and sister-in-law, Josie Ebling, Wheeler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one son.
Services were to be Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour before.

Gerald A. Lundberg, 87
RED WING - Gerald Adolph Lundberg, age 87, of Red Wing died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Hi-Park Care Center.
He was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Pepin, the son of Frank and Amelia (Smith) Lundberg. He graduated from Durand High School. He married Mae Herbison May 13, 1942. He served in the U.S. Army May 15, 1942, to Nov. 11, 1945, during World War II, serving with the 103rd Division in the European Theatre. He worked for Marigold Dairies for 32 years, retiring in 1965.
He enjoyed going to his sister-in-law's farm in Wisconsin, fishing, traveling, the outdoors, birds and playing the banjo and violin.
He is survived by: his wife, Mae; three daughters, Marcy (Dan) Underwood, Debbie (Glenn) Holden and Jane (Mike) Quinn, all of Red Wing; six grandchildren; two sisters, Ebba Main of Virginia, Minn., and Margaret Snyder of Wheaton, Ill.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman, Frederick, Arnold and Franklin.
Private family services will be held. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Fairview Red Wing Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Pallbearers are: Lonnie Diesing, Glen and Philip Holden, Dennis Lundberg, Colin, Dan and John Underwood.

LaVaughn C. (Larson) Thom, 71
LaVaugh C. (Larson) Thom died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Pine View Nursing Home in Black River Falls.
She was born in Hartland Township on Sept. 21, 1928, to J. Waldemar and Agnes (Halls) Larson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School in 1946.
She married Roman P. Thom on Oct. 7, 1946, at English Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. They lived in Red Wing for a brief period before moving to Ellsworth and establishing an interior-exterior painting and wallpapering business. In 1955, they opened Thom's Paint Store in River Falls, moving there in 1956. She managed the store and he ran the contracting business. In 1966, she began working for UW-River Falls in the food service departments. She retired in 1986 and they moved to Comstock, residing there until March, 1999. Since March, she has made her home in Black River Falls and Ettrick with her daughters.
She is survived by: two daughters, Cheryl (Kenneth) Olson of Black River Falls and Lisa (Ron) Perry of Ettrick; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Anna Marie (John) Howard of River Falls and Eileen Gulbranson of Ellsworth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roman Thom, in 1991.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. from the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, CTH D, rural Ettrick. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Pastor John Ashland will officiate and burial will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Jeremiah Lee Lindstrom, three-week-old infant son of Terry L. Lindstrom and Brenda K. (Peterson) Reyes, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.
He was born Oct. 22, 1999.
He is survived by: his parents; three sisters and one brother, Johanna Mitchell of Beaver Dam, Cassandra Reyes of Maiden Rock, Angela Reyes of Maiden Rock and Joseph Lindstrom of Maiden Rock; paternal grandparents, Jack and Helen Ames of Prescott; maternal grandparents, Keith and Marjorie Peterson of Ellsworth; maternal great-grandparents, Paul and Eldora Hickman, Carson City, Nev. Further survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 15, at the Diamond Bluff Cemetery, Diamond Bluff.

Ronald 'Bud' T. Pommerening, Jr., 22
PLUM CITY - Ronald Todd "Bud" Pommerening, Jr., age 22, of Plum City died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
He was born Jan. 12, 1977, in St. Paul, the son of Ronald and Gail Pommerening. His best friend, brother Ray, was born in 1981.
He was raised in Cottage Grove, Minn., and moved in 1989 to Plum City. While attending high school, he played basketball and football. He graduated from Plum City High School in 1995. He attended Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire for one-and-a-half years. Recently, he worked as a member of the Carpenter's Union in Red Wing. He enjoyed farming, being outdoors and listening to music. More importantly, he was thoughtful and compassionate and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by: his parents, Ron and Gail; his dear brother, Raymond; his grandparents, Robert and Audrey Pommerening; and maternal grandmother, Marlene Morrison. Paternal relatives are Aunt Cindy Pommerening; cousin, Shawn and her daughter Matisyn; Godfather, Robert Pommerening, Jr. (Deb Tinder); cousins, Angie and Robert III and their mother Joanne Pommerening; uncle, Randy (Rochelle) Pommerening; cousins, Randahl and Jessica; aunt, Jane (Jim) Pavek; cousins, Allysia and Rebecca; and aunt Ann (Ron) Piela and cousin, Max. Maternal relatives are: uncle, Mark Morrison; Godmother, Ann (Boone) Osterkamp; cousins, Telscha and Jenna; uncle, Todd (Kim) Morrison and cousins, Hannah and Roger.
