Dorothy 'Dort' L. Nelson, 80
DIAMOND BLUFF - Dorothy "Dort" Leola Nelson, age 80, of Baldwin and cofounder of Nelson's Super Valu died Monday evening, Nov. 8, 1999, at Regions Hospital. She had been admitted to Regions the previous day.
She was born June 5, 1919, in Cassville, the daughter of John and Lulu (Biggins) Shafer. She attended grade school in Diamond Bluff and graduated from Red Wing High School in 1936.
On Sept. 6, 1940, she was married to Wesley Nelson at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. They had three children: Trudy, Terry and Marilyn. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Baldwin, where they have resided ever since. In 1940, the couple founded the Nelson's Super Valu Grocery Store and, to this day, it's still family owned and operated.
She enjoyed working a good crossword puzzle, the challenge of a difficult question on a game show such as Jeopardy or spending time with friends playing bridge. Bird watching, gardening, fishing and cooking were some of her favorite hobbies. However, she will be remembered most by her friends as someone who genuinely cared for others. She was a devoted homemaker who dearly loved her family.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Baldwin, serving as a deacon and a member of the Presbyterian Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Baldwin Hospital Auxiliary, helping with fund-raisers, and a member of Eastern Star.
She is survived by: her husband of 59 years, Wesley of Baldwin; children Trudy Nelson of Bloomington, Minn., Terry (Barb) Nelson of Baldwin and Marilyn "Marnee" (Larry Andrews) Nelson of Wauwatosa; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Elsie Johnson of Oakdale, Minn., and Ruth Willink of Jackson, Minn.; brother, Jack (Judy) Shafer of Waseca, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Doreen Shafer of Waukesha, Odetta Shafer of Galesburg, Ill., and Elaine Shafer of Galesburg.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Raymond, Harold and Norman.
Funeral service was Thursday, Nov. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Baldwin with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Organist was Paul Willink, accompanied by vocalist Mark Willink. Casketbearers were Jeff Schneider, Bryan Mathison, Tom Hawley, Jon Mentink, Rob Durham and LeRoy "Perk" Gregerson. Memorials are preferred. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery.

Alvin M. Pearson, 76
Alvin M. Pearson, age 76, of Ellsworth died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born Dec. 28, 1922, in the Town of Wacota, Goodhue County, Minn., the son of A. Walter and Minnie M. (Rundquist) Pearson. He moved to Ellsworth with his parents at age seven. He farmed most all of his life in Ellsworth Township.
He married Arlene P. Peterson Nov. 26, 1949, in Ellsworth. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday.
He managed the Ellsworth Credit Union for many years. He served as sexton of the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery and was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Ellsworth Farmers Union and NFO. He loved his family and his farm.
He is survived by: his wife of Ellsworth; five children, Kenneth (Bonnie) Pearson, Waverly, Tenn., James Pearson, Ellsworth, Diane Pehrsson, Bend, Ore., Rick (Joni) Pearson, Elk River, Minn., Terry (Sue) Pearson, Rosemount, Minn.; six grandchildren, Greg, Jennifer, Jason, Alyssa, Kaitlyn and Jillian Pearson; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Maria Pearson; one sister and three brothers, Florence Howe, Tucson, Ariz., Carl (Joyce) Pearson, Ellsworth, Arthur (Gerry) Pearson, Prescott, Ariz., Donald (Sandie) Pearson, Red Wing. He is further survived by: nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Carol Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Garnon 'Wayne' Steele, 86
Garnon "Wayne" Steele, age 86, of Ellsworth died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the Kinnic Long Term Care Center in River Falls.
He was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Pepin, the son of Guy and Grace (Dodge) Steele. On Dec. 21, 1935, he married Marian Larson at Diamond Bluff. He retired from Armour and Company in 1975 and operated Steele Saw Sharpening in his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird watching.
Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Marian; daughters, Jeanne (Kenneth) Sobottka of Oak Creek, Deanna (Daral) Morrow of River Falls, Mary (Ron) Foley of Ellsworth; sons, John (Linda) Steele of Ellsworth and Larry Steele of Rice Lake. He is also survived by: 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; sister, Frances Breed; brother, Avon Steele; daughter, Norma Mae; and grandson, David Steele.
Services were Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Keehr Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Rev John Sutherland officiated the service. Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, Beldenville. Bearers were: Aaron Steele, Robert Steele, Craig Foley, Scott Sobottka, Robert Sobottka, Daral Tucker Marrow and Bill Morrow.

LaVaughn C. (Larson) Thom, 71
LaVaugh C. (Larson) Thom died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Pine View Nursing Home in Black River Falls.
She was born in Hartland Township on Sept. 21, 1928, to J. Waldemar and Agnes (Halls) Larson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School in 1946.
She married Roman P. Thom on Oct. 7, 1946, at English Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. They lived in Red Wing for a brief period before moving to Ellsworth and establishing an interior-exterior painting and wallpapering business. In 1955, they opened Thom's Paint Store in River Falls, moving there in 1956. She managed the store and he ran the contracting business. In 1966, she began working for UW-River Falls in the food service department. She retired in 1986 and they moved to Comstock, residing there until March, 1999. Since March, she has made her home in Black River Falls and Ettrick with her daughters.
She is survived by: two daughters, Cheryl (Kenneth) Olson of Black River Falls and Lisa (Ron) Perry of Ettrick; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Anna Marie (John) Howard of River Falls and Eileen Gulbranson of Ellsworth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Roman Thom, in 1991; and brother, Clarence J. Larson.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, Nov. 17, from the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, CTH D, rural Ettrick. Pastor John Ashland officiated and burial was to be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Douglas J. Bystrom, 40
RIVER FALLS - Douglas J. Bystrom, age 40, of River Falls, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1959, in Hudson, the son of Gaylord and Joan (Pearson) Bystrom.
He was a life long member of the First Covenant Church and was a devoted Christian. He was a graduate of the River Falls High School and attended UW-River Falls for one year. He then received training to become a barber in St. Paul. In 1980, he became partners with his brother in the Bystrom Brothers Barber Shop. He was very active with the Have-A- Heart Farm in its beginning years. He was a loving and caring person to everyone, especially his daughters, Rachael and Sarah. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to his cabin up north.
He survived by: his daughter, Sarah of River Falls; parents, Gaylord and Joan Bystrom of River Falls; brother, Larry (Char) Bystrom and their children, Jesse and Joey of River Falls; sister, Debra (Richard) Lucero and their children, David and Josie of Phoenix, Ariz.
He is preceded in death by: his daughter, Rachael; and grandparents, Newton and Edith Pearson, and Vernon and Dora Bystrom.
Funeral service was Sunday, Nov. 21, at The First Covenant Church, River Falls. The Rev. Neil Bonkoski officiated. Keyboardist was Kathy Larson and vocalists were Loren Paulson and Kurt Yelken. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: his first cousins, Scott Pearson, Dan Pearson, Dave Swanson, Craig Nelson. Honorary Pallbearers were: Russ Hoffman, Keith Peterson, Randy Bostrom, Kent Kruger, Bill Ruhr. Memorials are preferred to The First Covenant Church Building Fund.

Linda Souza, 58
Linda Souza, age 58, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Community Hospital in Carona, Calif.
She was born Feb. 22, 1941, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gotzman of Ellsworth. She was married to Richard Souza May 26, 1960, in Maywood, Calif.
She is survived by: her husband, Richard, one daughter, Michelle Souza, and one grandson, Corey Souza, all of Norco, Calif. She is also survived by two brothers, Robert Gotzman of North Port, Fla., and Ray Gotzman of Eugene, Ore.; two sisters, Dorothy Hamilton of Ellsworth and Carol Southhard of Vian, Okla.; plus many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; one brother, Lowell Gotzman; and an infant sister.
Memorials can be made to a favorite charity, church or local hospice.
Susan L. Slaikeu, 65
Susan Louise Slaikeu, age 65, of Red Wing died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at her home after a brief illness of brain cancer.
She was born Nov. 28, 1933, in Baldwin, the daughter of Carl and Jennie (Martin) Wiff. She graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School and River Falls State Teachers College. She taught kindergarten in Green Bay and Red Wing.
On April 3, 1958, she married Harley Slaikeu at New Centerville Methodist Church. They lived in Ellsworth until 1983, when they moved to Red Wing.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Red Wing, where she served as an Elder, was a Sunday School teacher and in the women's circle and social club. She was also a member of the PEO, a charter member of Red Wing's P-Flag and volunteer with Seminary Home-delivered meals. Her greatest pleasure was children. Her primary interests were family and home, flower gardening and sewing.
She is survived by: her husband, Harley; three children, Jill Slaikeu (Paul Huber) of Ellsworth, Paul Slaikeu (Mark Hartman) of Haywood, Calif., and Jenny (John) DuPlissis of Norfolk, Neb.; four grandchildren, Katie and Ellie Huber and Sarah and Andrew DuPlissis; two brothers, Charles (Barbara) Wiff and Tom (Bette) Wiff, both of Spring Valley; two sisters, Ellen Bohlman of Gothenburg, Neb., and Shirley (Russel) Schutt of Kerkhoven, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Red Wing, with Rev. Gary Elg officiating. Burial of cremains will be at a later date. Visitation was to be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice or the church.

Dorothy E. (Vinge) Neumann, 93
SPRING VALLEY - Dorothy Evelyn (Vinge) Neumann, age 93, of Spring Valley, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at the Baldwin Area Medical Center, Baldwin. She was taken there by ambulance that morning.
She was born June 25, 1906, the daughter of William and Wilhelmina (Haas) Glasner in Roberts County, S.D. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith in South Dakota. She grew up and attended school in South Dakota. She attended New Effington High School.
On March 17, 1925, she married Julian Vinge. They had a daughter, Gloria. They lived and farmed in South Dakota for nine years. In 1935, they moved to Zumbrota, Minn., where they farmed for two years. In 1937, they purchased a farm and moved to Hartland Township. They farmed there for nine years before moving to Gilman Township.
In 1966, he died and, about a year later, she sold part of her farm. She continued to live at her home in Gilman Township. On Oct. 20, 1973, she married Paul Neumann. He died in 1986.
She enjoyed gardening, fishing, dancing, traveling, playing cards and, most of all, being with her family.
Survivors include: her daughter, Gloria (Thomas) Ryan of Spring Valley; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia McKillip of Minneapolis; one sister-in-law, Loraine Glasner of Parshall, N.D.; stepson, Allen Neumann; stepdaughter, Barb Ford; one step-grandson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husbands, Paul and Julian; five brothers, Francis, Valentine, Clarence, Pat and Virgil "Bud" Glasner; one sister, Harriett; a great-grandson; and great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 29, at the Keehr Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Fr. Thomas Donaldson officiated the service with special music provided by vocalist Dorla Holm. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth. Honorary bearers were: Millard Nelson, Allen Neumann, Jeff Slocum. Bearers were: Shawn Slocum, Michelle Broderick, Mike Broderick, Nathan Fischer, Kelly Scherr and Kari Bartko.

Rudolph 'Nick' Kehren, 81
HAGER CITY - Rudolph "Nick" kehren, 81, Frederic, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Capeside Cove Good Samaritan Center in Siren.
He was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Belvidere Township, Minn., to Karl and Margaret (Mohr) Kehren and attended school through the eighth grade. He was a bricklayer for his father. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from May 9, 1942, until being honorably discharged Sept. 27, 1945, at Separation Point, Camp Polk, La.
He married Ruby Von Helmst, and they later divorced.
In 1963, he married Roberta Gorski, and they divorced. He was a bricklayer and worked on many large buildings in the local area, and also did fireplaces. He lived in Red Wing and Hager City until 1984, when he retired and moved to Webster. He enjoyed his home in the woods, where he could hunt and fish. He moved to Frederic in July to be near friends, as his health was failing. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and a 50-year member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Union. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He is survived by: his children, Arlo of Woodbury, Minn., Gary (Rita) of Boyceville, Rick (Jacquie) of Woodbury, Jeff, Lou (Les) Alloway and Mona (Paul) Bell, all of New Richmond, Linda Kehren (Robert) of Milwaukee, and Rhonda, Rudy, Randy and Rheana of Atlanta; his brothers, William (Hazel) of Lake City, Minn., Victor of Burnsville, Minn., Reno of Savage, Minn., and Frederick "Fritz" (Lottie) of New Prague, Minn.; his sisters, Margaret (Harlan) Nelson of Bay City, Marion (Roy) Schafer of Red Wing, Frances Klein of Isle, Minn., Alice (Frederick) Sprick of Lake City and Jean (James) Halling of Mazeppa, Minn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his extended family including Gordie (Angie) Chelmo of Frederic, Lee (Susie) Robbins, Sean and Luke Kirchner of River Falls, Joe (Sue) Kirchner of Webster, Jamie Kirchner of Mankato, Minn., Jennifer and Randy Hanson of Siren.
Preceding him in death were one sister, Hazel Hendel; and one brother, Charles.
Funeral was last Tuesday at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Webster, with the Rev. Doug Quenzer officiating. A committal service was to be Monday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, with the Rev. Steve Ward officiating.

Elroy S. Johnson, 64
Elroy S. Johnson, age 64, of Goodhue, Minn., died Friday evening, Nov. 26, 1999, at Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.
He was born April 29, 1935, in Pierce County to Simon and Martha (nee Bengtson) Johnson. He grew up in the Pierce County area, where he attended school. He started working for area farmers.
He married Dorothy McKay on June 26, 1971. The couple lived near Ellsworth. The couple lived in Bellechester, Minn., in 1989 and then moved to the Goodhue area in 1991. He enjoyed working with lawn mowers and fishing.
He is survived by: his wife, Dorothy; two sisters, Irene (Mark) Hilden of Ellsworth and Myrtle Neidermeyer of Spring Valley; two brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Johnson of Ellsworth and Loren (Wanda) Johnson of Ellsworth.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Stanley Johnson; and one sister, Mildred.
Memorial services were to be Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Larson Chapel in Zumbrota, Minn., with Rev. Kevin Olson officiating. Internment was to be in the Bethel Covenant Cemetery, Ellsworth.
