Mary E. Suskovic, 78
Mary E. Suskovic, age 78, of Lake City, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the Lake City Hospital Mayo Health System.
She was born July 14, 1921, in Trimbelle Township to George and Caroline Koller. She was a graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School. On Nov. 20, 1946, she married Robert Suskovic of Red Wing in Northwood, Ia. After marriage, they lived in Lake City. They were copartners in their jewelry business, Suskovic Jewelers in Lake City and Rochester, Minn., for 46 years.
She was active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Women's Guild. She also served on the Vestry. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many cherished friends.
She is survived by: her husband, Robert; three daughters, Jolee Suskovic of Minneapolis, Judee (Bill Hogan) Larson-Hogan of Rochester, Jeannie (Paul) Joas of Edina, Minn.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Betzel of Hastings, Minn., Ruthie Brunner of Red Wing, Rosie Eggers of Prescott; two brothers, John Koller of Oklahoma, Roy Koller of Eau Claire.
She is preceded by two brothers and a son-in-law.
Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Lake City with the Rev. Ed Barrnett and Scott Suskovic co-officiating. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City. Memorials are preferred to St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Lake City and the Lions Eye Bank.

William F. 'Bill' Grams, 52
William F. "Bill" Grams, age 52, of Ellsworth died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at The VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Feb. 13, 1947, at New Ulm, Minn., the son of Raymond and Lorraine (Sorbe) Grams. He was baptized March 9, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Minn., by Rev. George Matthiae. He was confirmed on May 21, 1961, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Gaylord by Rev. John Vaghts. He graduated from Gaylord High School in 1965. He entered the Army for three years of active duty, having one tour in South Korea and one in Vietnam. He then worked in Minneapolis in the construction and air compressor business.
On Nov. 21, 1970, he married Sharon K. Schlegelmilch at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Township, Cologne, Minn., by Rev. John Melchert. In 1973, they started farming near Cologne. In 1992, they moved to Ellsworth and began farming.
He was very active in church affairs and community affairs. He was chairman of Zion Lutheran Church Council for several years. He belonged to the Carver County (Minn.) Farm Bureau. In the 1980s, he fought the hazardous waste in Benton and Hancock Township (Minn.), where he was cochairman of Mn-POWER. He enjoyed farming and especially his family and friends.
He is survived by: his wife, Sharon; daughter, Heidi (Mitch) Anderson of Ellsworth; sons, Matthew and David Grams, both of Ellsworth; two grandchildren; his mother, Lorraine Grams of Gaylord; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis Grams of Gaylord, Ken Grams (fiancee Jeanette Rabe) of Hopkins, Minn., Steve (Judy) Grams of Hopkins, Lowell (Lois) Grams of Gaylord, Doug (IlaRae) Grams of Glencoe, Minn., Norman (Gayle) Grams of Winthrop, Minn., Wayne (Cindy) Grams of Winthrop, Mark (Deb) Grams of Gaylord; sister, Brenda Grams of Waconia, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his father, Raymond Grams; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wilmer and Esther Schlegelmilch.
Funeral services were held at English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Lauryl Stockness and Rev. Harlan Menk officiating. Interment was at National Cemetery, Fort Snelling, Minn. Casketbearers were nephews: Daniel, Aaron, Craig, Paul, Chad, Kyle, Todd, Tim and Shane Grams.

Donald Roy Grant, 82
BELDENVILLE - Donald Roy Grant, age 82, Beldenville, died Saturday, Dec.11, 1999, at United Hospital in St. Paul.
He was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Kinross, Ia., the son of Roy and Nora (Back) Grant. He attended schools near Kinross.
He married Evelyn Leona Utley on March 14, 1940. They lived in Southern Minnesota, where they farmed until 1958. They then moved to Silver Bay, where he was employed by the Reserve Mining Company, retiring in 1978. After retiring, they moved to Poplar. She died in 1988. For the past four years, he has resided in Beldenville. He enjoyed farming, fishing and outdoors.
He is survived by: three daughters, Geraldine (Bob) Sando of Silver Bay, Minn., Clarissa (Robert) Stern of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Tammy (Chris) Larson of Red Wing; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Gail Grant of Delevan, Minn.; and two sisters, Mildred (Ole) Fuchs of Pine Island, Minn., and Carol (Chuck) Lidtke of Waterloo, Ia.; daughter-in-law, JoDee (John) Larson of Minong; son-in-law, Arnie Lillback of Finland, Minn.; along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by: his wife in 1988; one daughter, Wanda Lillback; one son, Jerry Grant; and one granddaughter, Sheila Lillback.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Rev. Paul H. Christenson officiating. Burial will be in the Crystal Bay Cemetery in Finland.

Delores L. Cushing, 78
HAGER CITY - Delores L. Cushing, age 78, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, 1999, at her home.
She was born on April 30, 1921, at St. John's Hospital, Red Wing, the daughter of Theodore and Agnes (Denzer) Peterson, and lived in Red Wing until moving with family to Hager City in 1923. The family moved to Belvidere, Minn., in 1927, then to Goodhue, Minn., in 1929. She attended school in the Goodhue County (Minn.) school district through eighth grade. When the family moved to Diamond Bluff in 1929, she boarded in Red Wing to complete her freshman and half of her sophomore year. She then moved to Diamond Bluff and graduated from Prescott High School in 1939. After graduation, she worked for Cudahy Packing Company, St. Paul, and was employed at Nybo's Restaurant in Red Wing from 1943-1951.
On Jan. 29, 1951, she married Robert E. Cushing of Red Wing. She helped her husband run the family business, Cushing Marine Service, from 1961 until his death Feb. 26, 1982, and, after his death, she continued to operate the business, earning several awards from Evinrude Motors, including a Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Value and Service to Our Customers, which was presented to her last week. She was especially proud of this award, as it represented her philosophy of doing business.
She is survived by: sons, Michael (Marnie) Cushing of Eagan, Minn., James (Melissa) Cushing of Red Wing; stepchildren, Dennis (Bette) Cushing of Lakeville, Minn., Maureen (Stephen) Funk of Bay City, Vance (Judie) Cushing of Red Wing; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Ted (Ella) Peterson, Maplewood, Minn.; one sister, Millie Christensen of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband and parents preceded her in death.
Funeral service was Dec. 11 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Father Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Lyle K. Roen, 72
Lyle K. Roen, 72, of River Falls, died on Dec. 7, 1999, at the River Falls Hospital. He was born June 7, 1927, in Pleasant Valley to Melvin and Helga Roen.
He resided all of his life in St. Croix County and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion.
He was a dairy farmer most of his life, and retired from the University of River Falls in 1989. He was an avid gardener, and loved taking care of his yard and flowers, cutting wood and being outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, entertaining them with his stories.
He is preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Helga (nee Borgerson) Roen, a daughter, Kim Elsenpeter, and an infant granddaughter.
He is survived by his children: Judy Williamson, Dale and Judy Roen, Donna and George Reed, Jenny and Dean Mueller, Tom and Tammy Roen, Tim Roen, Kerry Licht, Scott and Serena Roen, Sandy and Larryne Roen; 24 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also survived by his brothers, Arnold and Evie Roen, Harley and Doris Roen, Kenneth and Deanna Roen; and his sisters, Marlys Torkelson, Doris and Glen Knutson.
Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Cashman's Mortuary. The funeral was Thursday, Dec. 9, at Rush River Lutheran Church with Pastor John Sutherland officiating. Burial was in Rush River Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Herb Bennett, George Crace, Rich Dallman, Jim Foss, Mel Kusilek, and Al Larson. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Montebriandt, Glen Francis and Jack Brande.
Memorials are preferred.
Janice F. Tucci, 47
SPRING VALLEY - Janice F. Tucci, 47, North Las Vegas and formerly of Kenyon, Minn. died Sunday Dec. 5, 1999, in Las Vegas following a long illness.
She was born July 11, 1952, in Northfield, Minn., to John "Jack" and Helen (Robinson) Fleming and grew up in the Kenyon area
She is survived by: her husband, Bob; her mother of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; five brothers, John (Jill) Fleming and Jim (Eileen) Fleming, both of Inver Grove Heights, Jerry (Sharon) Fleming of Spring Valley, Joe Fleming of Lake Elmo, Minn., and Jay (Linda) Fleming of St. Paul; and one sister, JoAnn (Gerald) Goodrich of Rosemount, Minn.
Preceding her in death were her father and one sister, Jane.
Memorial service was Saturday at Lundberg Funeral Home, Cannon Falls, Minn., with the Rev. Gary Titusdahl officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery near Randolph Minn., Memorials of the donor's choice are preferred.

Ellen B. Johnson, 74
SPRING VALLEY - Ellen Bernadine (Warian) Johnson, age 74, of Elk River, Minn., formerly of Baldwin, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at Guardian Angel By The Lake, Elk River, Minn.
Ellen was born March 27, 1925, the daughter of Bernard and Lucille (Jenkins) Wengel at Hazelton, N.Dak. She lived in North Dakota until the age of 13. She moved to Anoka, Minn., with her father and attended Anoka High School.
Ellen worked to help support her family. In 1946 she married Gunnar Langen and they were later divorced. In 1963 she married Steven Warian. She and Steve owned and operated the Crystal Bar in Spring Valley for 11 years. She went to work for a few years in Minneapolis. Steve died in 1976.
On September 20, 1993, Ellen married Wayne Johnson at Minneapolis, and lived at rural Baldwin. After Wayne's death in 1995, Ellen moved to Hudson. She recently moved to Elk River due to her failing health.
Preceding her in death were: her parents, her husbands Steve Warian and Wayne Johnson.
Survivors include: three sisters, Gwen Anderson of Texas, Lucille (Walter) Warpeha of Minneapolis, and Helen (Kenneth) Hathaway of Anoka; two brothers, Carl (Gloria) Wengel of Denver, Colo., and Ernest (Shirley) Wengel of Modesto, Calif.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Baldwin, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. John Hanson officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Toni Brekke, with congregational singing. Burial was in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Baldwin.

Herbert S. Yanisch, 81
Herbert S. Yanisch, 81, of Prescott died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Regina Medical Center, Hastings, Minn.
He was born Oct. 9, 1918, in Herbert (Salem Township), the son of Bernard and Maude (Herbert) Yanisch. He married Dorothy Stern Feb. 12, 1942, in Clayfield. They farmed in Ellsworth and Prescott for many years. While he was farming, he also worked for the Farmers Union, River Falls Creamery, Hove Automotive, Frank Brothers Grain Elevator and the St. Paul Pine Bend ammonia plant.
He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, bird watching, fishing and hunting. He was a member of Local 6-662 OCAW and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Prescott.
He is survived by: his wife of Prescott; three daughters, Frances Buss, River Falls, Faye Riley, Prescott, and Terri (Paul) Hempel, Hager City; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Delores (Allan) Sathra, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Bernadine (Vernon) Riegelman, Red Wing; and one brother, Eugene (Helen) Yanisch, Cottage Grove, Minn. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, two brothers, three sisters and one son-in-law, Kenny Buss.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Prescott, with Rev. Thomas Mannion officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was to be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Prescott, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Hartwick Olson, 90
PRESCOTT - Hartwick Kenneth Orville Olson, age 90, of Zumbrota, Minn., died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at District One Hospital in Faribault, Minn.
He was born Sept. 24, 1909, in Dickinson County, Ia., to Otto and Anna (Swain) Olson and attended school in rural Pine Island. He and his brother, Orland, farmed together in Roscoe Township until he retired in 1974. In 1950, they won a national soil conservation award, and the secretary of agriculture and the governor visited their farm. A resident of Kenyon Sunset Home since February 1998, he was a member of United Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He is survived by: one sister, Valborg Bungum of Zumbrota; one niece, Suzann Olson (Richard) Swanson of St. James, Minn.; and one nephew, Mark (Hope) of Prescott.
Preceding him in death were one sister, Velma Olson, and his brother.
Funeral was Thursday, Dec. 16, at United Redeemer Lutheran Church, Zumbrota, with the Revs. Wayne Radke and Darin Easler officiating. Burial was in United Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Mark and Erik Olson, Josh and Brady O. Swanson, Conway Jacobson and Ordean Swain. Honorary pallbearer was Fred Mark. Memorials are preferred to the church.

Hazel A. Nelson, 98
MAIDEN ROCK - Hazel Amanda Nelson, age 98, of Pepin died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand.
She was born July 28, 1901, in Pierce County to Emil and Selma (Julian) Hoffman. She attended Carmichael School in Maiden Rock Township and worked for the R.B. White Store in Maiden Rock. She married Harry Nelson May 8, 1939. They farmed in Maiden Rock Township until moving in 1965 to Pepin. He died April 14, 1970.
A lifelong member of Lund Mission Covenant Church, she was a former Sunday school teacher and belonged to the women's group. In 1992, she moved to the Plum City Care Center and in November moved to Pepin Manor. She enjoyed cooking and reading.
She is survived by: six nieces and nephews, including Willis (Norma) Hoffman of Pepin and Donald (Lucille) Hoffman of Red Wing.
Preceding her in death were: her husband; two brothers, Lester and Edgar Hoffman; and one sister, Lucille Swanson.
Funeral was Friday, Dec. 17, at Lund Mission Covenant Church, Stockholm, with Rev. Steve Jennisch officiating. Burial was in Marie Lund Cemetery, Stockholm. Pallbearers were: Steve Bachnman, Vern Bocksell, Donald and Willis Hoffman, James Nelson and Gary Swanson.
