Donald F. Behrens, 71
BAY CITY - Donald F. Behrens of Bay City died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Hi-Park Care Center. He was 71.
He was born Oct. 20, 1926, in Red Wing to Fredrick and Fredricka (Wolpers) Behrens. He graduated in 1945 from Red Wing Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army from June 21, 1945, to April 14, 1947, in The European Theater. He was an electrician in the Red Wing area and spent a number of years doing foreign construction work. He played for the Southern Minnesota Hockey Association and Red Wing Scarlets baseball team.
He was owner and operator of Goose Lake Resort for 35 years. A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, he also had belonged to St. Francis Catholic Church. He was a member of Bay City Harding-Darrington-Hall American Legion Post, Red Wing Elks Lodge and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by: five sisters, Angie (Ray) Weber and Marian (Elmer) Parmeter, both of Red Wing, Dorothy Ham of Fairfax, Va., Lucille (Tom) Parker of Red Wing and Mildred Hoffman of Hastings, Minn.; two adopted sons, Larry and Victor Behrens.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 27, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers were: Harold Henn, George, John and Sam Parker, Jim Stoehr and Craig Weber. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia Foundation.

Earl William Harding
PRESCOTT - Earl William Harding of Prescott died on Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at United Hospital in St. Paul. He was 82.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1916, in Oak Grove Township, the son of William and Johanna "Christine" (Fredrickson) Harding. He attended Harding School and farmed with his father in Oak Grove Township.
He married Dorothy M. Wehy Dec. 29, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He worked as a self-employed electrician. In 1955, he drove school bus and later did maintenance for the Prescott School system. He retired in 1981. He enjoyed "Old Time Music."
Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy of Prescott; two sons, Robert F. (Bonnie) Harding of Rochester, Minn., and Ronald (Lynda) Harding of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandsons; one granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister, Maybelle Whipple; and one brother, Arnold Harding.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 3, at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home in Prescott. Rev. Richard Durow officiated. Burial was in Pine Glen Cemetery, Prescott.

Kathryn Mary Christiansen
Kathryn Mary Christiansen of Red Wing died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing. She was 96.
She was born July 29, 1901, in Pierce County, the daughter of Anthony and Lena (Bach) Beckler. She attended Rush River School. She worked for various farm families in the Ellsworth area. She also worked in various restaurants and hotels in Ellsworth.
She married Francis Schmidt May 7, 1924, and they moved to Red Wing. He died in 1978. She then married George Christiansen in 1981 and he died in 1986.
She raised a grandson, Rodney Schmidt. She then started doing baby-sitting for many families in Red Wing. She also did laundry work, cleaning and she worked at Fairview Red Wing (St. John's) Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, children, cooking and baking.
She is survived by: one daughter, Donna (Gerald) Kyllo of Red Wing; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by: two husbands, Francis Schmidt and George Christiansen; one son, Jerry Schmidt; one grandson; one granddaughter; one great-great grandson; one sister, Agnes Beller; three brothers, Bill, Tony and Matt Beckler.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 4, at Church of St. Joseph, with Father Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery, Ellsworth Township. Memorials are preferred to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.

Robert G. Brenner
PRESCOTT - Robert G. Brenner of Prescott died on Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at his home. He was 76.
He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Red Wing, the son of son of Reuben H. and Clara M. (Foker) Brenner. He was a 1940 graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944 until 1946 in the European Theater.
He married Isabel "Ike" Pechacek Oct. 28, 1961, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plum City. He worked for Cenex for 10 years and Swift and Company for 17 years. He retired as a custodian from the Prescott School System.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting and fishing. He was a member of VFW Post 9060 and American Legion Post in Prescott.
Survivors include: his wife, "Ike" Brenner of Prescott; one son and three daughters, Pam Pechacek of Prescott, Renee Brenner of Prescott, Gail Brenner of Prescott and Penny (Greg) Brown, Hudson; one granddaughter, Courtney Brown; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were held on Sunday, April 5, at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Prescott with Rev. Richard Durow officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be in Pine Glen Cemetery at a later date.

Sadie Myrtle Smith
ELMWOOD - Sadie Myrtle Smith of Elmwood died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at her home in Elmwood. She was 85.
She was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Canada, the daughter of Swan and Mona (Latam) Melstrom. She returned to the United States as an infant, along with other family members. She grew up in Moeville (rural Ellsworth), and graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School. She received her teaching certificate from River Falls Normal, and later earned a Bachelors Degree from UW-River Falls. She taught in several rural area schools, the seventh grade in Elmwood and also in the surrounding area. She retired from teaching in 1978.
She married Robert Smith of Elmwood Aug. 23, 1933, in Vermillian, S.D. They made their home and farmed in the Elmwood area. He died in January of 1982. She moved to Elmwood, where she lived with her sister Gladys for several years, then lived with her granddaughter, Lori. She remained active in the United Methodist Church in Elmwood, was a member of Eastern Star, Elmwood Legion Auxiliary and Wisconsin Education Association.
She is survived by: one son, Charles (Rosemary) Smith of Mondovi; one daughter, Janet (David) Martin of Rochester, Minn.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Nelson of Morris, Ill.
She was preceded in death by, besides her husband: her parents; one son, Myron in 1953; three brothers, Lawrence, Wilfred and Myron; and one sister, Gladys Seguin.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 4, at the United Methodist Church in Elmwood with Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery-Rock Elm, rural Elmwood.

Laurence Ward Corbett, Sr.
Laurence Ward Corbett, Sr. of Minneapolis died on Friday, March 27, 1998, at his home. He was 95.
He was born June 22, 1902, in Washington D.C. to Lee Cleveland and Evelyn L. Northrup Corbett. He earned a B.S. (1924) and an M.S. (1925) in agriculture from Cornell University.
He married Helen Marie Ives on Feb. 1, 1926, in Ithaca, N.Y. They had four children. She died May 30, 1977. He married Gerd Jacobson (Settli) on Sept. 23, 1978, in Minneapolis.
He moved his family to Minneapolis in 1932 to work for Northrup King and Company. He became the Manager of Bulk Seed Sales, Vice President in charge of Garden Seed. He retired in 1972. He developed the Victory Garden Program during WWII, served as Chairman for the Research Committee for American Seed Trade Association and as Chairman of the All-American Selection for flowers and vegetables, as a member of the men's Garden Club of Minneapolis. He helped plan and plant the Garden for the Blind. He was a member of the Old Guard, Gyro Club and the Six O'Clock Club. He was State President and National Vice President for Region 4, Sons of the Revolution. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho social fraternity, Sigma Xi honorary society for research in science and a member of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Gerd Corbett of Minneapolis; one son, Laurence Ward (Joan) Corbett, Jr. of Portland, Ore.; one stepson, Peter (Patty) Settli of Oslo, Norway; two daughters, Dorothy (Douglas) Richards of Fairmont, Minn., Elizabeth (Douglass) Herrman of Idaho Falls, Ida.; one stepdaughter, Anne (husband Odd Gunnar) Breigutu of Oslo, Norway; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his first wife; one daughter, Helen (Robert L.) Johnson and one grandson, Marcus W. Corbett.
A memorial service was held Thursday, April 2, at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Minneapolis. Memorials may be directed to the charity of choice.

Robert "Bob" Shafer
SPRING VALLEY - Robert "Bob" Shafer of Wilson died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at Baldwin Hospital. He was 55.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley, with Fr. George Becker and Sister Karen Friend officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Spring Valley. Friends were to call at Keehr Funeral Home in Spring Valley on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and at church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. A prayer service was to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Eunice G. Schroeder
ELMWOOD - Eunice G. Schroeder of Elmwood died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood. She was 84.
She was born Feb. 23, 1914, in the Rock Elm area of rural Elmwood, the daughter of Barzilla and Emma (Kopp) Betterley. She moved to Elmwood with her family when she was a child and grew up there.
She married Carl O. Schroeder in 1951. After marriage, they lived in Elmwood, where she worked as a telephone operator. Her husband died in 1960. She has been a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home since 1985.
She is survived by: one daughter, Crystal (Wayne) Qualmann of Madison; two sons, Carl "Butch", Jr. of Elmwood, Richard A. of Ellsworth; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 7, at the United Methodist Church, Elmwood. Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiated. Spring burial will be in the Ono Cemetery at Grange Hall, rural Maiden Rock.

Otto Christenson
Otto Christenson of Ellsworth died Monday, April 6, 1998, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital. He was 82.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1915, in Ellsworth Township, the son of Lewis and Christine (Olson) Christenson. He was a 1933 graduate of Ellsworth Senior High School. He worked for the A.S.C.S. office in Ellsworth until he was called to serve his country. He served from 1942 until 1945 in the U.S. Army, 80th infantry division. He was in the 319th antitank regiment serving in the European Theater.
He married Bernice Sandberg at Ft. Dix, N.J., in the spring of 1944. After returning to Ellsworth, he resumed his employment with the A.S.C.S. office. Later, he was elected Pierce County Treasurer, where he served until 1972. He then worked for Pierce County Bank and Trust until his retirement.
He enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles. He was a member of English Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: three sons, John Christenson of Madison, Ron (Louise) Christenson of Eau Claire and Gene (Debbie Meister) Christenson of St. Paul; three grandchildren, Sara and Shad Christenson of Eau Claire and Eric Meister of St. Paul; and one brother, Olaf (Evelyn) Christenson of Ellsworth.
He was preceded in death by: his wife; three brothers, Edwin, Marvin and Herman; and three sisters, Henrietta, Cora and Dena.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at English Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Revs. Harlen Menk and Lauryl Stockness will officiate. Friends were to call at the Hill-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, on Tuesday from 5:08 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Our Savior's Cemetery, Beldenville.

Donald E. Anderson
SPRING VALLEY - Donald E. Anderson died Friday, April 10, 1998, at his home in Baldwin after a battle with cancer. He was 69.
He was born March 31, 1929, the son of Henry and Emma (Peterson) Anderson in Hartland Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley for many years and was presently a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin. He grew up in Hartland Township and also lived in Martell and Gilman. He was a graduate of Spring Valley High School Class of 1947.
On Sept. 7, 1952, he married Dorla Wolske. Two children were born to them, Dennis and DeAnn.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He also served in the Army Reserve for eight years. He worked for Duffy's Cleaners in Spring Valley for 27 years. He worked as a Drivers License Examiner for the Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department for a short time and later worked at Nor-Lake in Hudson, retiring after 22 years.
On Aug. 31, 1985, he married Joyce Harshman at Nashua, Ia. They lived in Baldwin for the past 12 years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 240 at Baldwin. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. He had many friends and enjoyed going to church and participating.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce of Baldwin; one son, Dennis (Susan) Anderson of River Falls; one daughter, DeAnn (Mark) Olstad of Hudson; two grandchildren, Adam and Angela Anderson; two brothers, Malcolm Anderson of Spring Valley and Kermit Anderson of Plymouth, Minn.; two sisters, Isabelle (Mrs. Bernard) Bartyzal of Tacoma, Wash., and Hazel Meyers of Cambridge, Minn. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Lloyd (Sylvia) Olson of Barron; 18 nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Janice (Ray) Varela, Pamela (Joe) Schladweiler, Larry (Tammy) French, Jim (Sharon) French, Ronald (Marinelle) Harshman and Thomas Harshman; other relatives and many friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; infant brother, Russell; brother-in-law, Emmett Meyers; sister-in-law, Jeanette Anderson; and niece, Charlene Birkel.
Funeral services were Monday, April 13, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Baldwin, with Rev. Paul Lovestrand officiating the service. Music provided by organist Victoria Lovestrand and Charlotte Wendtlandt. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery, Baldwin.
Honorary bearers were: Billy Anderson, Manley Mathwig, LaVere Wolske, Lyman Wolske, Mervin Wagner, Ray Tiegen, Keith Gregerson and Robert Paul. Pallbearers were: Marlon Anderson, Martin Anderson, Marlowe Anderson, Barry Wentlandt, Pete Krizan and Gary Wolske.
Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, handled arrangements.
