Ben Moldenhauer
World War I veteran dies in Fort Atkinson
FORT ATKINSON, Wis. -- Ben Moldenhauer, one of Wisconsin's few remaining World War I veterans, has died at 107.
Moldenhauer served as a private in Company B, 32nd Division, of the U.S. Army. He enlisted at a Fort Atkinson park when he was 20 and then served nearly two years in France.
"I spent six months in the firing line," Moldenhauer told the Daily Jefferson County Union three years ago. "And we moved from one front to the other one."
Moldenhauer died Saturday at Fort Memorial Hospital.
"It is a big loss," said Andy Schuster, spokesman for the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.
"It's time for people to reflect, especially at this time when we're losing soldiers because we're in harm's way."
With Moldenhauer's death, Arthur Fiala, 105, of Kewaunee, is Wisconsin's only known surviving World War I veteran, according to state records.
In 1994, Moldenhauer received a medal from Wisconsin's veterans affairs secretary to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I.
During the war, Moldenhauer and his company trained in some woods near a small French town before they were sent into the trenches. He told the newspaper he had several close calls.
"I was going to the front-line trenches," he said. "They were shooting past me, with bullets going by. I was just lucky enough not to get hit. I've had a lot of close ones."
Moldenhauer, who was born June 14, 1897, on a farm in the town of Aztalan, was discharged from the Army in 1919 when the war ended.
He met his wife, Bernice, at a Milwaukee dance hall, and they got married
in 1940. He worked on an assembly line at American Motors for more than 40 years until he retired in 1965.
Moldenhauer said he was proud to have served his country.
"I didn't mind it after I got home," he said. "But I wouldn't do it again."
Survivors include Moldenhauer's wife and a daughter, Sharon. Funeral services will take place Wednesday morning at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson.
