Rockwell, Franklin Eugene
April 17, 1910 - May 30, 2002
JANESVILLE/DELAVAN - Franklin Eugene Rockwell, age 92, formerly of Janesville and Delavan, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Mission Ridge in Billings, MT. He was born April 17, 1910, on the family farm on County K in Darien, WI, the son of James 'Newt' Newcomb and Minnie Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Rockwell. He married
his high school sweetheart, June Dunwiddie, on July 3, 1933, in Chicago. Four children were born to this union: Bonnie Lou, Julie Ann, Peggy Jean, and Roger Eugene. June preceded him in death in McAllen, TX, on July 18, 1980. Her body was donated to the Medical School of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Rocky attended Toppings Corners School and Delavan High School, playing football for the high school team. As a young man, he worked at the Beardsley Store in Darien; he hauled pheasants to New York for Mr. MacFarlane of Janesville; he worked at a South Dakota hospital as an orderly; and he was a volunteer fireman. He worked at Borg Instruments in Delavan before and during World War II and continued both in Delavan and later in Janesville, then worked for Gibbs Manufacturing until his retirement. Rocky also worked for a time for T.S. Willis.
As a carpenter, he built every home his family lived in since 1943 and many for others. When he and June were living on Castle Rock Lake near Friendship, at what started out to be a weekend getaway, Rocky built a corner lot home into a ceramic shop for June to teach her classes. Rocky made many of the molds himself and also poured them for her.
Rocky and June were married
for 47 great years. On July 11, 1982, Rocky married
the former Elna Feine Bohnen in Billings, MT. During one of Rocky's western vacations, they were introduced by his nephew and Elna's son and hit it off. Families from both sides attended the service. They were just shy of celebrating 20 years of marriage this summer.
He enjoyed traveling and through the years took June and his family on many trips. Later, he enjoyed driving and traveling in the motor home with June when they went to Florida and then to Texas every winter, and later with Elna when they went to Arizona. Numerous vacations to Hawaii, the Caribbean, Canada and most parts of the United States were viewed by Rocky at one time or another.
He was an avid cribbage player, having taught all of his children and grandchildren and many of his great-grandchildren. He could remember many hands that he held to beat off various friends and family members!
Rocky's other favorite pastime was golfing. The day before Thanksgiving of 2001, he had his third hole-in-one in Billings at the Par 3 Golf Course at the age of 91! He enjoyed playing with the ``kids,'' his golfing buddies: the 70- and 80-year-olds. He did enjoy playing several rounds of golf with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also, right up through the summer of 2001. He was also a very good pool player and bowler.
Rocky thoroughly enjoyed his 90th surprise birthday thrown for him in August 2000 at the Janesville Senior Center by his children. He was truly surprised and amazed at the number of people who visited with him. That was the year he witnessed the terrible ``windstorm'' that came through Janesville and said he'd ``never seen anything like it.'' Rocky attended every Rockwell family reunion since he was a young child, except two. He enjoyed visiting with everyone. His trips back home every year were enjoyed by everyone in the family.
He is survived by his wife, Elna of Billings, MT; his children: Julie (George) Folk of Rush City, MN, Peggy Gleich of Janesville, Roger (Jewell) Rockwell of Oxford, WI; son-in-law, Larry Callaway of McAllen, TX; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; several stepchildren and their families; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and several second cousins and others. He is also survived by special caregiver(s), Marg (the late Gordon) Dangerfield of Billings, MT. Gordon and Marg took great care of Uncle Rocky for more than 20 years in Montana, sharing salmon fishing and elk hunting with him, as well as watching over him while he was away from his family back home, and introducing him to his second wife. Rocky had another family of grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews who also loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his wife, June; his parents; a daughter, Bonnie; grandson, Daniel Brian Folk; and his siblings: Fred, George, Russell, and Louise.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at MONROE FUNERAL HOME, 604 E. Walworth Ave., Delavan, with visitation Wednesday one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Darien cemetery, Darien, WI. A memorial service will be held in Billings, MT, prior to the Delavan services.
