Arthur Fiala
KEWAUNEE, Wis. - Arthur Fiala, Wisconsin's last surviving World War I veteran, has died at the age of 106. Fiala died Wednesday at the Kewaunee Care Center, as reported Friday in the Green Bay Press-Gazette. According to state records, Fiala had been the only surviving state veteran of World War I since the death of Ben Moldenhauer of Fort Atkinson in August 2004 at the age of 107. Fiala, a Kewaunee native, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918 and was sent to France. He was in the French Alps cutting logs and railroad ties for fortifications at the front when he broke his arm and was reassigned as a cook's helper. He spent time near the Spanish border and then Bordeaux, his last stop before going home. 'I never regretted going over there,' Fiala told the Press-Gazette in 1999, the year he was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his service. 'That war was a good experience.' After the war, he farmed, owned a tavern and also worked in nearby Two Rivers before he retired at the age of 65. In an interview last year with the Lakeshore Chronicle, Fiala said peanuts and brandy contributed to his longevity. He said he got heart benefits of vitamin E from eating peanuts, and 'every night I get my swig of brandy, without fail.' Fiala was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Adeline. He is survived by a son, Carl, of Milwaukee. A funeral Mass was scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Parish in Pilsen, in western Kewaunee County.
