Dr. John Flynn
Dr. John J. Flynn, 61, of Eau Claire, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at his home surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
John was born August 4, 1939 in Eau Claire, to James and Mildred (Craney) Flynn. On February 28, 1959 he married Barbara Evanson at St. James The Greater Catholic Church in Eau Claire. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 1963. He practiced in Wayzata, Minn. for 6 ½ years before moving back to Eau Claire where he opened the Westgate Animal Hospital in 1969.
John was active in the community and was a local Veterinarian since the late 1960's. He was a member of the Eau Claire School Board for 23 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
He is survived by his wife Barb; two daughters, Rebecca (Jim) Anthony and Ramona (Robert) Mathews, both of Eau Claire; two sons, Roland of Mishawaka, Indiana, Robert (Ann) of Bay City, Wis.,; two brothers, Patrick and Frank "Butch"; one sister, Jane (Donald) Fisher; his mother-in-law, Lois "Tudy" Evanson; eight grandchildren, Kyle and Collin Flynn, John King, Alexander, Michelle and Phillip Anthony, Judy (Tim) Maldonado, and James Mathews; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Rudy Evanson; two brothers, Gerald and Michael.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 18, 2000 at 11 a.m. at St. James The Greater Catholic Church with Rev. John Schultz officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday, August 17, 2000 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the Golden Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Avenue, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. public prayer service, and Friday one hour before the services at the church.
John will be remembered for his many contributions to the Eau Claire School Board, and the kindness he gave to all of his four legged friends.

Clifford Johnson
Clifford M. Johnson, 72, of Strum and formerly of Eleva, died Monday at Sacred Heart Hospital.
He was born on March 9, 1928, in the town of Chimney Rock, in Trempealeau County, to Clarence and Minnie (Knudtson) Johnson.
He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953.
He married Lois Hageness on April 2, 1955, in Eleva.
He was employed by Fisher Body in Janesville, farmed in the Chimney Rock area and later operated a saw sharpening business in his home.
He was a member of the World Wide Church of God in Eau Claire.
Clifford was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Johnson of Strum; a son, Gary Johnson, of Eleva; two granddaughters, Megan Johnson, and Rachael Johnson, both of Eleva; four brothers, Donald (LaVonne) Johnson, of Eleva, Norman (Kathy) Johnson, of Eleva, Larry Johnson, of Eleva and Gerald (June) Johnson of Stanley, N.D.; two sisters, Marion (Milford) Ulness of Eau Claire and Delores Cleasby, of Eleva.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Johnson.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Eleva-Strum Church of the Nazarene in rural Strum, with Pastor Roger Galstad officiating. Burial will be at the Eleva Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Eleva American Legion.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Kjentvet and Smith Funeral Home in Eleva Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.
Jeffrey Lahner
Jeffrey P. Lahner, 32, of the town of Union, and formerly of 1621 Donald Avenue, died unexpectedly Monday, August 14, 2000, at his residence.
He was born in Eau Claire, on July 9, 1968, the son of Donald and Beverly (Garton) Lahner. He graduated from Eau Claire Memorial High School in 1986.
He was a sales representative at Charter Communications.
He is survived by his mother, Beverly and father, Donald Lahner, both of Eau Claire; son, Zacharie, seven years old; brother, Kevin; five half brothers and sisters, Mike Krueger, Greg (Linda) Krueger, Sharon (Jim) Stocks and Kathy (John) Bates, all of Eau Claire, and John (Nancy) Lahner of White Bear Lake, Minn.; a niece, Angela Krueger; and a nephew, Allen Krueger.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Jeffrey loved to fish and enjoyed sharing that time with his son, Zach. He was a loving son, father, and brother who will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Church with Pastors Richard Bridston and Tim King officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and an hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Ruth Slaby
INDEPENDENCE -- Ruth A. Slaby, 30, of Independence, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at her home.
Ruth was born on Feb. 2, 1970 in Clintonville, Wisconsin to Gordon and Pauline (Dumke) Klemp. She was raised in the Township of Bear Creek, Waupaca County. She graduated from Clintonville High School in 1988. Ruth continued her education at the Chippewa Valley Technical College, graduating in 1990 with an associate degree. On Feb. 4, 1994 she was united in marriage to Randy Slaby at the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville. The couple has lived and farmed the family farm in Independence all of their married life. Ruth was previously employed at the Watkin's Home in Winona as an administrative secretary. She was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church, Clintonville.
Survivors include her husband, Randy Slaby of Independence; her father, Gordon Klemp of Clintonville; maternal grandfather, Paul Dumke of Clintonville; two sisters, Mary (Ray) Boyer and Diane Klemp, both of Clintonville; three brothers, Paul (Ann) Klemp and Daniel (Vicki) Klemp, both of Clintonville, and David (Jan) Klemp of Menasha; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a pray service at 7:30 p.m.
Services are tentatively scheduled for Saturday in Clintonville.
Clifford Stewart
Clifford V. Stewart, 83, 311 Twin Oaks Drive, Altoona, died Monday, August 14, 2000 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He went to be with his Heavenly Father after a courageous struggle with lung cancer.
He was born July 24, 1917 to John and Helen (Emery) Stewart in Prairie du Sac, Sauk County, Wisconsin. He graduated from Sauk Prairie High School in 1936, where he lettered in Varsity Football. Clifford received extensive training in Milwaukee as a Mechanic. He graduated from a mechanical motor course in Fort Riley, Kansas.
Clifford was an instructor teaching other military personnel in diesel Mechanics at Fort Riley. He served overseas in World War Two under General Patton in Company F 32nd Division Calvary Reconnaissance squadron (Mechanized). He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Sergeant Major when he received his honorable discharge. In 1943 he met and married Private First Class Dorothy May Adams.
Following his service years, he worked at John Deer Plow Company in Madison and Osseo Supply and Service in Osseo. Clifford moved to Eau Claire and worked as both a mechanic and a supervisor for Briggs Transportation Co. After working at Uniroyal for 22 years in the Maintenance Dept., he retired. Following retirement he worked for Carlson Systems in Eau Claire. Clifford volunteered many hours delivering meals for Meals on Wheels for 10 years.
Clifford was an avid Packer fan. He was also a fan of sports in general. He followed his son, Ron's professional baseball career and his son George's football career. He loved to fish and hunt in his younger years and he enjoyed bird watching in his retirement years. He was a friend and a member of First Baptist Church in Eau Claire. Clifford was also a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Prairie du Sac.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy of Eau Claire; his children, Virginia (J Harvey) Cole of Grove City, Pa., Diane (Earl, deceased) Karow, Ronald (Sharon), George (Debra), all of Eau Claire; his grandchildren, Michelle Karow-Wilde of Eau Claire, Catherine (Jason) Te Peske of Chetek, Wayne Stewart, Todd Stewart and Brian Stewart, all of Eau Claire; his great grandchildren, James, Mike, Chris and Jared Wilde of Eau Claire, and Danielle Stewart of Augusta; sisters-in-law, Virginia Godshall of Venice, Fla., Wilma Stewart of Prairie du Sac, and Martha and George Adams Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; nieces, Barbara Morris of Prairie du Sac, Kay (Ken) Griffith of Mazomanie, Dawn Adams of Florida and Terry Marsh of Maryland; a nephew, James Stewart of De Forest.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Kenneth.
Funeral Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Eau Claire, with Pastor David Christner officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire, with full military honors by VFW Post #305.
Friends and relatives may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel, Eau Claire, and Friday an hour before services at the church.
Ethel Thompson
Ethel C. Thompson, 74, of 3202 Chasewood Lane, Eau Claire, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Ethel was born in Nelson, Wisconsin on June 18, 1926 to Lauritz and Inger Brant. She was married to Lester Thompson at Lyster Lutheran Church on January 19, 1946. She was employed at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire for 30 years.
She and Lester resided in Eau Claire for 40 years. They spent four years at a lake home in Cable, Wis. from 1990-1994.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lester; her daughters, Eunice (Terry) Boehlke of St. Paul, Minn., Barbara (Mitch) Piper of Eau Claire; son, Leonard (Kathy) of Milwaukee; grandchildren, Jennifer Piper, Stephanie (Tony) Market, Angela (Tim) O'Bryan, Nicholas Piper, Krista (Bob) Klindworth, Gretchen Boehlke, Heather, Michael and Mark Thompson; great-granddaughter, Madeline Market; brother, Palmer (Karen) Brant; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire where a 7 p.m. service will be held.
Friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Lyster Lutheran Church in Nelson township, Wisconsin where a 10:30 a.m. service will be held. Burial will be in Lyster Cemetery.

Viola Kaner
ELMWOOD -- Viola "Vi" G. Kaner, 73, of Elmwood, died Monday, November 6, 2000, at Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
Vi was born March 3, 1927, in Dubois County in Indiana. She was the daughter of Claude and Lenora (Kendall) Russell. Vi grew up in Indiana, graduating from West Baden High School in 1946. After high school she lived and worked in Indianapolis for a short time before moving to Chicago. Vi worked at a bank in downtown Chicago, where she met and later married Harry W. Kaner on August 30, 1950, in Indiana. After marriage, they both worked in Chicago until 1956, when they moved to the township of Eau Galle, rural Elmwood, where they farmed and she has remained the rest of her life.
Vi is survived by her husband, Harry; three sons, David (Judy) of Rosemount, Minn., Bob of Menomonie and Joe (Barb) of Roberts; eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Martha Archer of French Lick, Ind., her twin sister, Betty Holiday of Paoli, Ind., and Jenny Spaulding of West Baden, Ind.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Billy in 1957 and Jim in 1993; one sister; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2000, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Menomonie. Rev. Lyle Schulte will officiate. Burial will be in Clearview Cemetery, Eau Galle.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
