Thomas Quirk
Thomas Francis Quirk, 84, of Lake Wissota, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Luther Hospital.
Tom was born in Mineral Point, Wis., October 22, 1916, to Pierce Patrick and Mary Jane (Jeffery) Quirk. He graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1934, where he was class president, quarterback of the football team and state championship basketball player.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps, "Blue Hornets" from May, 1941, to May, 1945. These four years of service to his country were a definite highlight of his life and grew evermore important to him with each passing year. His tour of duty took him to England, Scotland, Italy, Corsica and North Africa. In May, 1945, in Corsica, he found Pourquoi, a long-haired Chihuahua, and smuggled her home in a barracks bag. They were a popular team with their escapades well publicized.
The real love of his life was Eileen Julia Severtson whom he married in Dodgeville, Wis., on February 16, 1946.
Tom graduated from the Wisconsin Institute of Technology/UW-Platteville, May 27, 1949, with a diploma in Mining Engineering. He worked as an Engineer for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in Eau Claire from 1955, until retirement in 1981. He was project engineer on several roads and bridges including the original I-94. At the age of 55 years old, he obtained his private pilot's license and received his instrument rating at 70 years old. Tom and Eileen enjoyed many cross-country "adventures", coast to coast and north to south. Tom was an avid Packer fan from the days of Lombardi through thick and thin. To those who knew him, Tommy was a popular and fun loving guy whose personality and good sense of humor were often called upon to MC important gatherings throughout his lifetime. He will truly be missed.
