Shirley Preissel
Shirley A. Preissel, age 63, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, was called to heaven on March 31st, 2003 after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lyndon Station with Father Ronald Zinkle, S.J. officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.
Shirley was born June 20, 1939 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Pezall) Parchem. After spending her early childhood years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she and her family moved back to Lyndon Station, Wisconsin, in 1953, where her chores included helping run the family farm and caring after her family. Shirley graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in the spring of 1957. On November 15th, 1958 she married Richard A. Preissel at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lyndon Station, and she remained a devout Catholic throughout her life. During the winter of 1958/59 they managed the Sunset Villa’s Hotel in Pompano Beach, Florida . In the spring of 1959 they moved back to Wisconsin Dells, and took over the family business, Black Hawk Motel and Cottage Court, which consisted of twenty four aging cottages. For the next 44 years Shirley co-owned, expanded and operated the present Black Hawk Motel. During these years she was blessed with four children and five grandchildren. Her family was the love of her life. Her second love was operating the motel because she loved to work and meet people. Some of her repeat guests were considered extended family, some relationships dated back to over forty years. She also made friends with fellow motel owners Bud and Mabel Wolfram with whom she took her first cruise with in 1974 and Don and Bev Sarnow with whom she took her last cruise with in 1999. She was a past den mother for the cub scouts and a past member of the Wisconsin Dells Women’s Business Association, where she held the office of president in 1990-1991. Shirley also loved the simple things in life, which included dancing and flower gardening. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. One of her passions was cooking; she often invited her children’s friends to the dinner table. She loved the daily task of washing towels and especially the motel bedding at the end of each season. It wasn’t done right unless it had that fresh Downy smell. She often stated “if you can’t say how it is, don’t bother saying it”. She used these words often with her battle against cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was “the rock” of the family and was known for her kind and generous heart. She felt blessed that she had beaten cancer long enough to hold her newborn grandson, Noah.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Richard; sons, Dick (Judy), Bill (Kathy), Brad (Tena) Preissel; a daughter, Debbie (Rocky) Dobyns; grandsons, Jason and Noah; granddaughters, Casey, Annie and Melissa; brothers, Jerry and Ken Parchem; sisters in law, Bonnie, Chris and Kathy Parchem; nephews, Bill, Brian, John and Jeff Parchem; nieces, Michelle Dougherty, Patti Johnson, Janice Clingman; a lifetime childhood friend, Mary Crosby and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Eleanor and brothers, Norb and Ray Parchem.
