Hermann Gnuechtel
Hermann Gnuechtel, age 85, of Oxford, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 19, 2003 at 5:00 P.M. at the Oxford Funeral Home in Oxford, with Reverend Donald Wedel officiating. Following the traditional services Hermann will be cremated.
Born in Germany, July 13, 1918, the son of Guido and Wally Gnuchtel, he grew up in what later became East Germany. He served in the German Army for nine years during WW II, and later was held as a prisoner of war in England, where he met and married his wife, Sylvia. Their oldest son, Fred, was born in England, and then they ventured to Canada via ship and settled in Ontario, where he became a flour miller and went on to parent four more children, Herman, Christianna, Michael, and Ruth.
He was then led to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, where he purchased a small gas station and convenience store on the shores of Lake Huron. He not only owned and operated this business, but also drove school bus for the local DeTour Village area school district, built homes in his spare time, as well as managed a roadside park along Highway 134, just outside of DeTour Village.
He and his wife, Sylvia, retired and moved to Oxford, Wisconsin in l996, where he enjoyed many hours working on his favorite pastime cutting firewood. He also had a deep love for reading and studied conservative politics and economics, which was evidenced by his vast library of books including some of his own publications.
His long life and many life experiences molded a devoted father that was loved very dearly by all his children. He worked hard for his family and always put the needs of his family before his own. Through his example of hard work, he instilled in his children a strong work ethic and many valuable life lessons. He was an energetic and passionate man. He had a cantankerous and exuberant personality which provided many lively discussions with his children and grandchildren!
During his final years he cared for his ailing wife with heartfelt tenderness and patience, that even his children weren’t always aware of.
Hermann is survived by his wife, Sylvia; sons, Fred (Helen) of Austin, Texas, Herman (Donna) of Hampshire, Illinois and Mike (Phyllis) of Kerrville, Texas; daughters, Chris (Steve) Hanson of Appleton, Wisconsin and Ruth (Steve Forrester) Gnuechtel of Batavia, Illinois; sisters, Ruth and Christianna both of Germany; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
